Progressive Education is an essential view of education that emphasizes the need

to learn by doing. It also aspired to meet every student as an individual and enables the

engagement of both intellectual as well as social intelligence. Students are encouraged

towards experiental learning, independence and critical thinking. The Department of

Education implemented additional two years in the Philippines high school system, which

began in the school year 2016-2017 as part of the K to 12 program. The two years of

Senior high school has its goal to provide enough time to acquire sufficient knowledge

and mastery of skills that will prepare Senior high school students for higher education

and future employment. As part of the program, students are set to choose a career

track/strand from ten academic strands. With many factors to consider, it may be difficult

for a student to select a career track.

Given the set of ideas, the school education system fall into John Dewey’s

philosophy of education, which emphasizes a pragmatic approach to schooling. He

believed that a child-centered `approach to education, places the emphasis of learning

on the needs and interests of the child. Dewey believed that humans learn through a

‘hands-on’ approach. This places Dewey in the educational philosophy of pragmatism.

Teachers should prioritize the observation of the student’s interest, and then serve as

someone who helps them develop problem-solving skills that can be applied into real life

situations.

The major problem that students encounter is the deficiency of quality learning

within the two-year course of Senior High school. We should be taught with sufficient

learning materials, catered with comfortable study areas, and most importantly to be

taught how to apply what we learn in school into the outside world. If the Senior High

school education system visualize students to acquire sufficient knowledge and to

develop mastery of skills for future employment, why aren’t students trained-ready for the

advancement to be professionals?
However, even if we learn inside the classroom, the learnings are still stagnant.

Due to the fact that the education system lacks the capability to deliver practical

applications after a discussion. To make it simple, learnings discussed in the classroom

should be applicable in relation with future-real life situations but still cannot be functional,

still due to the lack of facilities in the school. Some teachers manage to think outside the

box and teaches efficiently using their own senses and capability. The K to 12 program

visualizes to prepare us in two years, for future employment and for the development of

our skills. The researchers oppose the idea of the said preparation. Students cannot

simply hone their skills with the given situation. It is difficult for students that they cannot

practically apply what they learn.

Humans learn through experience. We can attain the idea or thought of something,

using our abstract imagination but we cannot be adept in a particular field without

experience. For example, some students who graduated Senior High school with their

respective career track/strand, advanced into a course in college which is not

synonymous to the career track/strand they took during Senior High school.

The occurring phenomena clearly explains that some students did not quite

understand what they were supposed to learn in their respective career track/strand. That

is a very big factor to consider that the caliber of education didn’t meet with the standard

of the student. If the progression of learning was there, applied to, and explained well,

then it would not turn into something like this phenomena. How can we create potentials

and future-idealistic professionals, if the education system cannot progress students in

an excellent learning pattern?

Considering the fact that once an individual gather their ideals and philosophies in

life, they will directly attain what they need in order to be a better version of

themselves.
So once a student has their idea on what to pursue, they will never get tired to

achieve that career. Also given the fact that if you are passionate with what you do, you

will never be worn out with it. Chances are if students are guided, properly assessed and

built up, they will stick into something that they know that they are good at.

The researchers dug deeply to comprehend the difficulties despite the short

amount of time given to research. Moreover, the researchers found an efficient way for

the study to excel. Southwestern University PHINMA Senior high school department

should be more concerned about the deficiency. There are several factors that affects

quality education. The lack of qualified teachers, lack of supplies, lab equipment, lack of

funds and books. The overcrowding of the department is also a factor that limits the school

to perform its task to deliver quality education. The Dynamic Learning Program (DLP)

is suitable for socio-economic countries like the Philippines, low budget but effective. In

addition it also enables students to independently assess themselves with their studies,

but with accordance with progressive learning, both is key to efficiently synthesize the

student’s knowledge and mastery of skills, because of given the two-year span of the K

to 12 program. To boost the efficiency of applied learning, the researchers are resolute

to analyze the current situation.
