FOREWORD
Indonesia mining industry is still facing many challenges such as on the mining
development, illegal mining, uncertainty of Law, and reserves development, that has
influenced to the investment climate. However, geologically Indonesia is still
positioned as one of the top ranked attractiveness region for mineral potential based
on Mineral Potential Index 2004/2005 published by Fraser Institute, besides the new
democratic elected government has strong commitment and political will to improve
the investment condition.

The Indonesia Mineral and Coal Statistics of 2005 is published to provide public with
better understanding of the mineral and coal supply and demand situation in
Indonesia. The statistics consist of many aspects, including production, export,
domestic sales, status of mineral and coal mining enterprises, state revenue from
general mining activities, including from mining service companies, and community
development expenses.

Data in this publication are mainly collected from Contract of Work (COW) for
minerals, Work Agreement for Coal Mining Enterprises (WACME) for coal, and some
Mining Authorization holders for coal. Since 2003, we have developing a web-based
mineral and coal databank system. We wish to improve the mission as public
services in fulfilling needs of comprehensive data and information on coal and
mineral enterprises in Indonesia.

In general, there was an increase of coal production, export and domestic sales as
projected in 2004. It will be expected to be higher in 2005 not only due to some new
companies enter to production but also as an current high demand on mineral and
coal.

Inquiries about figures, tables, or any other information in this publication should be
addressed to Directorate of Mineral and Coal Enterprises, Jl. Prof. Dr. Supomo
