END OF CHAPTER QUESTIONS:

1. Differentiate between a research idea and a research question.
The research idea is the main concept of your research project that will dictate the direction of the
literature you need to review. It is from this review of your research idea that you can formulate your
research question which is basically the statement of the problem.

2. Create a conceptual framework for a research project.

This study investigates alternative methods for the dissenfection of seawater for cooling of power plant
condensers, by utilizing methods other than that of hypochlorite dosing, such as the use of Mixed
Oxidizing systems, chlroamines and other possible naturally occurring dssinfectatns.

This study zeroes in on the professional development activities for teachers by espousing the idea that
the classroom performance of teachers is a critical factor for student academic performance. The
researcher based her assumption from Weiner’s Attribution Theory that external and internal factors can
improve performance.

For example, students may attribute their academic performance to their teachers (external factor) while
the teachers may attribute their teaching performance to in-service trainings (external factor) and
perhaps, to their teaching efficacy, job satisfaction, and attitude towards the teaching profession (internal
factors). These relationships are illustrated in Figure 1.

3. Detail a strategy using the four frameworks approach to research, to source appropriate literature.
Conceptual Framework – first is to conceptualize a research idea you want to work on that is
researchable, then look for previous studies, articles, information on your chosen idea, collate and reflect
on what you have found out, and come up with a workable statement of the problem
Theoretical Framework – From the statement of the problem, review relevant literature from which you
can build up a theory which will support the research you are about to undertake.
Methodological Framework – From the literature review you should be able to build on how you will
execute the research, probably one can start in general such as identifying a certain process or method to
be used, then slowly going into detail on the materials, expected results and discussion of the
experiment/research proper, this accounts how the research was carried out. Appropriate literature could
be international standards, testing methods, or methodologies from relevant studies.
Analytical Framework – This will contain analysis results of the actual research. Other literature that
could be included are similar/relevant data from other studies that can be compared t
4. Detail describe and explain some of the different approaches to research
Survey and case study are examples of research approach, survey approach facilitates the wide study of
a topic, this is often used for large populations or studies which are geographically scattered. While Case
study on the other hand are indepth study of phenomena, these are detailed studies of incidents or events
of a particular organization or business.

5. Visit the library and find copies of theses which report research projects which students in your
university have carried out using case study and survey methodologies. Be critical in your examination
of these projects. Critique the theses in terms of their overall quality. Critically examine the standard of
writing in the theses. Critically examine the bibliographies in the theses.

by Alexandre Descomps

6. Read the research statements of questions or hypotheses. As conceptual frameworks for their research
projects, how well do you think they work? Read the research methodology chapters.
The authors writing was very personal, his aim was synthesis of a new compound, he did give credit to
his references but did not follow the APA format

7. Read the research methodology chapters. What initial thoughts do you have about them?
The methodology was experimental, since his objective was synthesis of a new product.
8. What research methodology was used?
Experimental design
9. What was the population of the research?
It was not stated
10. Was a sample used, and if so what sampling method was used?

The study was more on synthesis, not much sampling was done.

11. How is the sampling method described? Is enough detail given to allow the reader to critically evaluate
the method used?
Not applicable
12. What data collection methods were used?
Observations and data and recording.
