Are you in favor that the Philippines should remain a member-state of WTO?

The Philippines, nowadays, is a legit representation of a diverse State with a potential player of a big role
in the International Market. With its numerous products and services to offer worldwide- both labor and
tangible products, admittedly the Philippines is not a mediocre country in terms of its ability to produce
the needed manpower of the world, not only for such entry level workers but skilled and professionals as
well. Also, being situated in a tropical country where abundance of water and life-sustaining ecosystem
made it possible to grow varieties of produce and plants that will potentially feed the world. Not only that,
minerals and other precious elements are abundant which makes the natural resources of this country
enormously rich.

On the other hand, the Philippines had been a member of WTO since January 1, 1995. This was
spearheaded by the former President Fidel Ramos as part of the renowned philosophy of his Leadership
as “People Empowerment.” This action was learnt as to ignite the economic growth and sustainable
development. President Ramos brought the Philippines to the ideals of globalization to empower the
Philippines. During his administration, Ramos began implementing economic reforms intended to open up
the once-closed national economy, encourage private enterprise, invite more foreign and domestic
investment, and reduce corruption. He cited recently that what the Philippines needs is interdependent
foreign policy which he asked the incumbent president Rodrigo Duterte to tweak his foreign policy saying
cutting ties with the Philippines’ traditional allies and partners may not be in the best interest of the
country. Of course, this is a different story but for rationalizing the significance of the WTO, needless to
say, I need to understand the perception of the prominent figure that manifested the context of foreign
policy in being part of the WTO.

The WTO was created in 1995 to encourage and regulate trade between its over 150 participating
member nations. The primary objective of the WTO is to create economic growth and encourage free
trade among nations: supporters contend the WTO creates economic opportunities. By creating a strong
international economy, proponents contend, the WTO in turn creates an international framework of
political stability, and offers a solid foundation for promoting international peace by encouraging good
political relations among member nations and providing a solid dispute resolution process.

This organization can offer lucrative values for countries with strong foundation in terms of internal
government structure with minimal if we can’t achieve zero corruption and; those countries who
implement favorable policies that are best for the Majority. We need to have a quality standard in terms of
handling Marketing Efficiency for the Philippines to avoid corruption which would delay the growth of the
Philippines in achieving the space in the International Market.

What will happen if we can’t comply at those criteria?

The Countries with corrupt Leaders and other people involved in developing foreign relation shall only
limit their opportunities for social and economic mobility. In this event, the WTO is only widening the
global income gap between the wealthy and poor: as the rich get richer, the poor get poorer. The WTO
favors prosperous countries and multinational corporations, while preventing smaller and poorer countries
from having a fair shot of engaging in open market trades and exchanges.

The WTO is there to help countries like the Philippines to grow. The organization was born out of a set of
negotiations, known as the Uruguay Round, held between most of the world's economies. The WTO
describes itself as a proponent of free-flowing and reliable trade between nations but also introduces
certain barriers to trade if they are required to protect consumers or inhibit the spread of disease. The
WTO also dealt with service and intellectual property trades and the WTO makes it faster to settle
disputes. These cover tariff rates and specific market access commitments, and other policies in goods
and services. The new member's commitments are to apply equally to all WTO members under normal
non-discrimination rules to determine the benefits (in the form of export opportunities and guarantees)
other WTO members can expect when the new member joins. The talks can be highly complicated; it has
been said that in some cases the negotiations are almost as large as an entire round of multilateral trade
negotiations.

The Philippines needs to be part of the WTO. What we need is to be vigilant against croaked Politicians
who will just loot the Philippines from the bias transaction that will possibly harm the Philippines later.
