Nature v Nurture

1. Twin studies reveal that both nature and nurture would affect the behavior and influence of an
individual. For example, since they are twins, they will obviously have similar gene makeup and
characteristics, but influence will play an enormous role on how one will grow up. If one of the twins
were to be raised by a middle class family while the other twin were to be raised by a wealthy upper
class family, their personalities would differ tremendously. They would both view the world differently.
Their desires, views on life and etiquette backgrounds would change them as a person.

2. The Self could refer to as how others would perceive that specific individual. In other words, the
individual would shape himself based off of how others perceive him. Normally, people would conform
based off of society or a group of people. George Herbert explains how I is how an individual perceives
how others think of him, and the me portion is how the individual, himself, is who he actually is without
conforming. The "I" part refers to that of individualism while the "me" part is the socialized aspect of
that person. According to Mead, there are three activities that influence and helps grow the self. Those
activities are language, play and game. The language portion helps the individual associate himself with
others and allows people to respond to his/her attitude. The play portion allows the individual to wear
mask and pretend to be like someone else. Overall, people would manifest the self on how others
perceive of how they should be.

3. The dramaturgical approach could be seen as elements of human interactions in which are dependent
by time, place and surrounding people. According to Goffman, the self is a sense of how one is. He
formed a metaphor on how to define the method of how human beings are presented to others in
comparison to culture and expectations. They are compared to actors, and if the actors prevail, the
audience will observe the actors as how he wants to be seen.

4. The agents are put into four categories which are family, peers, school and media. The role of schools
in gender role socialization is an important portion of life. Research has shown that in schools, males are
more active than females. This could explain why males have a difficult time sitting quietly or to listen
patiently. Technology has affected socialization in a major way. Technology has allowed people to use
phones while others are conversing with them or while spending time with loved ones. They would turn
to the device for virtual comfort rather than actively speak with the people they are present with.

5. Total institutions are institutes that are away from society such as a prison. Goffman had stated that
there are four traits of total institutions. All aspects of life are conducted in the same place and under
the same authority, Each phase of the members daily activity would be carried out in the immediate
company of other people, all phases of the days activities are scheduled and the contents of various
enforced activates are brought together as parts of a whole plan to help fulfill aims of the institution.
Degradation ceremony is used to question an individual's sense of self by using humiliation or other
tactics.

6. There are different societies in which people live in. Some of them assume that the elderly could be
seen as a waste of space and unnecessary, while other societies idolize them and seek them for wisdom
and knowledge or even experience. Activity theory is when the elderly are helpful within society and are
involved. A solution regarding ageism could be communication and the avoiding ignorance. With these
tools individuals would become more aware of their surroundings and prosper in life.
