CBSE Grading System in Class 10th

HOW CBSE’S GRADING SYSTEM WILL WORK

1. All students have been awarded grades, not marks
2. The practice of declaring Compartment/Fail has been discontinued
3. The result of candidates is now declared in two categories: Eligible for qualifying
certificate (QUAL) and Eligible for improvement of performance (EIOP)
4. All candidates, even if they have failed in all subjects will now have five chances to
improve their performance without having to repeat a year.
THE NEW ORDER
With Board exams being made optional from the academic year 2010-11, a new system
of evaluation – Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) – based on grades
has been approved. It comprises formative and summative assessment of the student to be
done over two terms – first and second -during the year-long academic calendar.
Summative Assessment: Based on the Formative Assessment: To evaluate and grade class
term-end examination work, homework, assignment and project work

1) There will be two evaluations each in the 1) There will be one term-end exam for each term.
first and second terms.
2) The first term-end exam will carry 20 marks.
2) Each evaluation will carry 10 marks 3) The second term-end exam will carry 40 marks.
apiece.
EVALUATION
Students of class IX and X will be evaluated on a 9-point grading system. Each grade,
given on the basis of both formative and summative assessments, will correspond to a range
of marks as indicated below:
MARKS RANGE GRADE GRADE POINT

91-100 A1 10.0

81 -90 A2 9.0

71 -80 B1 8.0

61-70 B2 7.0

51 -60 C1 6.0

41 -50 C2 5.0

33-40 D 4.0

21-32 E1
00-20 E2

Points to Remeber :
(i) Assessment of theory/practical papers in external subjects shall be in numerical scores. In
addition to numerical scores, the Board shall indicate grades in the marks sheets issued to
the candidates in case of subjects of external examinations. In case of internal assessment
subjects, only grades shall be shown.
(ii) Subjects of internal examination in Class X the assessment shall be made on a five point
scale I.e. A,B,C,D & E.
(iii) The grades shall be derived from scores in case of subjects of external examination. In
case of subjects of internal assessment, they shall be awarded by the schools.
(iv) The qualifying marks in each subject of external examination shall be 33% . However at
Senior School Certificate Examination,in a subject involving practical work, a candidate must
obtain 33% marks in the theory and 33% marks in the practical separately in addition to
33% marks in aggregate, in order to qualify in that subject.
Important :
(a) In case of a tie, all the students getting the same score, will get the same grade. If the
number of students at a score point need to be divided into two segments, the smaller
segment will go with the larger.
(b) Method of grading will be used in subjects where the number of candidates who have
passed is more than 500.
(c) In respect of subjects where total number of candidates passing in a subject is less than
500, the grading would be adopted on the pattern of grading and distribution in other similar
subjects.

Advantages of Grading System

My friends who have got 71 or 75 marks will be awarded the same grade. I feel this
is unfair. In what ways are grades better than marks?
Awarding of grades has number of advantages over awarding of numerical marks. It
considerably reduces inter and intra examiner’s variability in marking.
It also takes care of imperfection of tools used for assessment. Statistical research in
assessment techniques indicates that there is a possibility of variation of scores awarded to
individuals to the extent of to 15%.
Putting students of similar potential in same ability bands (grades) automatically
takes care of all these aberrations in assessment techniques.
Lastly, it will reduce undesired and unsound comparison of small difference of marks.

Why Grading System was Introduced ?

The New Scheme of Grading has been introduced with the aim that :

 It will minimize misclassification of students on the basis of marks.

 It will eliminate unhealthy competition among high achievers.
 It will reduce societal pressure and will provide the learner with more flexibility.
 It will lead to a focus on a better learning environment Operational
 It will facilitate joyful and stress free learning.

CBSE Grading System in Class 12 ?

After the decision to start grading system in Class X board examinations, the government
may introduce a similar system in Class XII, Minister for Human Resource Development Kapil
Sibal said on Thursday.
Mr. Sibal said the idea has already been mooted and a committee has been set up. It will
examine how grading could be introduced at Class XII.
“We had a brainstorming session on this,” the minister told reporters here on the sidelines of
a meeting on the school education programme.
After the committee gives its report, it will go the Central Advisory Board for Education and
then to the Council of Boards of School Education in India (CoBSE).
The HRD ministry has introduced grading system at Class X under the Central Board of
Secondary Education (CBSE) from this year.
The nine-point system starts from A1 (a grade for students who have done exceptionally well
in the exam) to E2 (unsatisfactory performance).
He said consultations were being held with the stake-holders to arrive at a conclusion on
introducing grading system in Class XII.
It is also looking at the feasibility of conducting a national-level entrance test, like Scholastic
Aptitude Test, with national percentile scores in different subjects for undergraduate
programmes.
This is in thinking process. No decision has been taken.

CBSE Grades in Class X this year, marks on special request

Students of class X taking board exams in March 2010 will not get to know their
percentage. Their ‘marksheet’ will only bear grades from now on and not marks.
As per a presentation on Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) made at
conference on schools at IIT Delhi on Monday, the CBSE will switch to the grading system for
class X from this session itself. For the last time, board exams for class X will be held in
March 2010. From next academic session, CCE will be implemented in all CBSE schools, doing
away with the exams.
According to the CBSE, marks obtained by students will not be disclosed unless there is a
special case. “Revealing the marks will defeat purpose of introducing grades. However, we
may make an exception if a student is shifting abroad or on a recommendation of the
principal,” said a senior CBSE official.Class X students will be graded on a nine-point system
starting from Al to E2. Their admission in class XI will also be based on grades. Those who do
not get a qualifying certificate from the board due to an E1 or E2 grade will be given five
attempts to improve their performance.
According to the CBSE official, The ministry of human resource Development (MHRD) may
also direct other boards to accept grades or the CCE card (to be given from the next session)
if a student switches from a CBSE school to another school in class XI “There was a meeting
between the officials of. the MHRD and Council of Boards of School Education last week to
discuss this issue,” the official said.
Though there will be no change in the exam pattern for the existing batch of class X, teaching
method and evaluation for class IX have already seen a change. CCE started in class IX from
October this year and instead of exams, the students would just have a „summative
assessment‟ at the end of the current session. The official added pattern of the question
paper to be provided by the board for „summative assessment‟ would be different this year.
“Till now, the pattern of class IX paper used to be same as that of class X. But we will have
around 15% multiple choice questions in the class IX paper from 2010,” the official said. He
also added that unlike before, there will not be two different papers for science theory and
practical skills. “Only one pa¬per will be held for science in class IX,” he said.
CCE is a hot topic at the three-day conference at IIT Delhi as teachers from all over the
country got a chance to clear their doubts. The conference will last till December 30 with
education experts, principals and teachers presenting papers on issues related to schools.

How CBSE Grading System Works? in: India

Now the CBSE Board exams for 10th students have been made optional from the academic
year 2010-11. Also, a new system of evaluation is introduced which is known as Continuous
and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE). In CCE we will have two parts. 1. Formative
Assessment, 2. Summative Assessment. Formative assessment will evaluate and grade the
classwork, home work, other assignments and projects. There will be 2 formative assessment
each in the first and second terms. Each assessment will consist of 10 marks. Summative
Assessment will be based on the end-term examinations. There will be one end-term
examination for each term. The first end-term examination will consist of 20 marks whereas
the second term examination will carry 40 marks.

The percentage system is no more. CBSE has come up with a new grading system. Class 9th
and 10th students will be evaluated on a 9 point grading system. Each grade will be given on
the basis of above-discussed formative and summative assessments. HRD minister Kapil
Sibal has claimed that this move will revolutionise the school education system in India.
However the experts are saying that the grading system’s main aim to reduce pressure on
students. Government has made Class X exams option but what about other exams, like Class
12, graduation etc. Suppose if the students choose to skip the class 10 exams, they have to
take their Class 12 board exams. Also, we will have rat-race for A1 grade in schools. I don’t
know what the meaning of D grade. Will it be equivalent to FAIL?

Grade Marks
A1 95 and above
A2 90 to 94
A3 85 to 89
B1 80 to 84
B2 70 to 79
C1 60 to 69
C2 50 to 59
C3 33 to 49
D Lees than 33

Grading System in Indian Schools

The Indian education system has taken a step forward towards reviving the education system
with the introduction of grading system in session 2009-10. It will help in reducing the
pressure on students during exams. In the last five years the meaning of education has
changed for students from imbibing knowledge to merely scoring marks, resulting in myriad
forms of education policies.

As per reports, every day more than 17 students aged between 15-25 years commit suicide in
India due to non-performance in the examination or an entrance test. Watching young
children of the country succumbing to the undue pressure of scoring high marks is horrifying.
One of the points to note here is the thinking of the society, which puts lot of pressure on
students to 'to perform'.

This pressure from schools, parents, peer groups and society takes away the youthfulness of a
child. Further, a health report also supports that this often causes health hazard such as
fatigue, body aches, eye weakness, stress and in more severe cases, depression
(neurotic/psychotic.) Looking at today's education scenario, the Central Board of Senior
Education has introduced educational counselors and child psychologists in schools to boost
the confidence of young students and mentally prepare them for the board examination. This
method has helped in reducing the stress and making them comfortable with the examination.

Understanding the board exam system in India and its relation with students is of great
importance in present times. While coping with the expectations of school, parents and
society and keeping pace with their talent, students face a lot of hardships. Thus, the
implementation of a grading system and abolition of board exams is really a boon for
students.

Adoption of grading system in India, the grading system was introduced in 2008-09 from
class I-VIII, reducing the exam stress. Extending the concept to class IX and X has further
reduced the pressure, giving students an opportunity to explore other avenues. Following the
US model, the implementation of the grading system is to bring in more practical education
than the current theoretical method. This model prescribes a varied range of opportunities,
providing children of all levels a platform to showcase their talent and pursue their interests
traditionally; class XI students were given subjects as per marks scored in Class X. This
system often disappointed students if they scored low. Moreover, if a student didn't get the
required percentage due to poor scoring in one subject, then the entire percentage gets
affected. The grading system will give students relief. It will provide ample opportunities to
students to excel in their choice filed.

Its implementation will help an average student to cope with the stress though leaving a lot of
toppers to question it. Students will be evaluated on a 9-point grading system, which will
diminish the difference between a student scoring 99% and one scoring 91%. Both students
will get the A+ grade. To make the grading system a success, parents and teachers need to
acknowledge children's special assets and encourage them pursue their interest.

The grading system by HRD minister - Kapil Sibal has brought in a new wave of
transformation in the Indian education system. He put India up on the ladder of the global
education system. The HRD minister commenting on the system said that it would provide a
standardization of excellence at the school level.
