The history of islam in the ph starts with the arrival of the Shariffs, they are missionaries, Islamic

Missionaries came from Yemen, particularly from the area of Hadhramaut. These missionaries arrived
through different time periods , the earliest during the 13th century , one of the first missionaries to
come was named Tuan Masha’ika, others call him as Tuan Maqbalu, also, others saying they are
different individuals, then came Shariff Karimal makdum who built the first mosque in Tubig Indangan,
Simunul, Tawi-Tawi

Then, after the arrival of karimal makdum, a few hundred years later, 14 century, came sayyid abubacar,
from the port of malaka, modern day Malaysia, established the sultanate of Sulu, , considered as the
first sultan, a few years later, during the 15th century, Shariff Kabungsuan, entered the modern day area
of north cotabato city and preached the religion of islam

But before the arrival of kabungsuan, there were sheriff Maraja and J(H)asan whose point of origin was
the state of Juhor in modern day Malaysia, in the Lanao region, the most known Islamic preacher who
came there around the 14th century was Shariff Aulia who settled and built a mosque in the area of
tagaluan in misamis occidental, the stories tell that after he had preached the religion, he went back to
juhor, to care for his parents

The maguindanao sultanate was officially recognized during the 16th century during the rule of
Sultan Muhammad Dipatuan Kudarat he is the first maguindanaoan to use the title of sultan, before
him, the maguindanaoan chiefs used the title datu and raja, and the area of maguindanao sultanate
before was comprised different chiefdoms called as Inged Karajaan, different community have a
different name

There are 13 muslim tribes , the largest being the maranaws, from the Lanao del sur and del norte
region but they could also be found in bukidnon, the 2 misamis provinces, maguindanaons from
maguindanao, sultan kudarat, south cotabato and north, saranggani, some areas in bukidnon, in davao
del sur, Zamboanga del sur and Sibugay, the 3rd being the Iranuns, in the province of maguindano
particularly, the municipalities of parang and buldon

Then in Zamboanga del sur and Sibugay, after that are the tausugs who could be found primarily in
Sulu, tawi-tawi, basilan, Zamboanga city, Zamboanga del norte and del sur, Palawan, saba, after that are
the Iyakans, who are found in basilan, some islands in Sulu and Zamboanga City, then the Sama badjao,
there are a lot of sub-groups in sama dilaut, sama bangingit, sama mapun

The main group is sama badjao which can be found in the sulu archipelago, primarily in the province of
taw-tawi, in zamboang city, Zamboanga peninsula, Palawan primarily in the southern part, and saba
wherein they make 14-15% of the total population, M(b)olbog of balabac island, palawanun of batarasa,
nara municipalities of Palawan, sangil from saraggani and davao del sur

Calagan from the davao region, the muslims are scattered in the coastal areas, calibugans of the
Zamboanga peninsula they are Subanon =indigenous people of Zamboanga muslims by faith but they
are Christians or practitioners of indigenous beliefs
