4.0 DESIGN CONCEPT:

All the areas under the `Scope' of protection are covered by Inert gas IG 541 (Inertech)
extinguishing system. Cylinder quantities and gas requirements are worked out based
on requirements of single largest risk i.e. Central Control Room, ESP & Computer
Room. Other rooms are protected using directional valve and common cylinder bank as
required for the largest risk.

Based on the largest volume to be protected i.e. Central Control Room, ESP &
Computer Room, total quantity of gas and numbers of cylinders are calculated using the
factors considered in the Design Basis.

4.1 Estimation of quantity of cylinders and gas

4.1.1 Inputs to this software are as follows:

Volume : As per Gas Calculation sheet

Temp. of hazard : 210C
Size of cylinder : 160 Litres (water capacity)
Reserve/Standby : Equal number as that of main cylinders
Altitude : 0 mtrs.
Storage pressure : 300 bar
Working pressure : 60 bar (downstream of controller)
0
Design concentration : 39.98% at 21 C (For Class ‘C’ fire )
Max. Pressure in the room : 5 milli bar

4.1.2 Outputs of the software

For Central Control room
Quantity of gas : 466.2 kg (Main) & 466.2 kg (Reserve)
Nos. of 160 lit. Cylinders : 07 Nos (Main) & 07 Nos (Reserve)

These calculations are for the largest volume to determine the nos. of cylinders and the
same quantity of gas to be filled for the protection of the largest risk.

4.2 Estimated quantity of nozzles

For calculating the quantity of nozzles required, coverage area of 3600 nozzle shall be
circular of Radius 7m and of 1800 nozzle shall be semicircular of Radius 7m.

Quantity of gas in each hazard is already calculated which is to be discharged by nos. of

nozzles in that hazard. The software selects the size of nozzles based on the gas
quantity to be discharged. Min. working pressure of the nozzles is 2 bar & max. 60 bar.

4.6 Master and Slave Cylinders

Every bank does have one master or more, which have solenoid actuator, Manual /
Pneumatic actuator, Pressure Controller and contact gauge mounted on the cylinder
valve. This solenoid when actuated opens the discharge valve of master cylinder and
the gas release pressure from the pilot connection of master cylinder valve
pneumatically opens the discharge valves of slave cylinders connected to the discharge
valve of master cylinder by pneumatic actuator & pilot hoses which results in release of
gas in the respective hazard.

In case of IG 541 Central Control Room, ESP & Computer Room on actuation of
solenoid valve provided for the bank of 07 cylinders (for Room & Ceiling Void), the gas
release pressure from the discharge valve of first (Master) cylinder opens the discharge
valves of 06 slave cylinders respectively which result in release of gas in IG 541 Central
Control Room, ESP & Computer Room.

The pressure required to operate the pneumatic actuators on the directional valves is
taken from the main distribution manifold. The pressure via a pressure regulator, &
solenoid valve outed into the Directional valve. On actuation of solenoid valve, the
released pressure operates the pneumatic actuator and opens the distribution valve to
release IG 541 gas into the relevant area.

Pipe work from cylinder manifold(s) for respective area is routed as per detailed area
0
system layout(s). Based on the nozzle coverage, required nos. of nozzle of 360
discharge pattern type are used for the protection of risk. As explained above, related
system hardware to facilitate auto operation of IG 541 system such as detection system
interfacing, is also provided.

4.7 Main & Standby Cylinders

In cylinder room, provision of standby cylinders for each Zone has been kept and the
configuration of the master/slave cylinders for main and standby has been identified in
P&I diagram and cylinder storage room layout drawings.

In Gas Release panel, selector switch for Main / Standby cylinders is provided

4.8 Manual Release, Abort Switch, Pre & Post Discharge Hooter, and Gas
Discharge Indicator. (Connected to Gas Release Panel)

Outside each hazard under protection, Manual Release Push Button is provided for
emergency release of gas. For release of gas, break the front glass and push the
button. Additionally abort switch is provided outside each hazard to hold release of the
gas during small fires or any maintenance work inside the room.

Pre-Discharge Hooters are provided inside hazard under protection which will give Audio
indication prior to gas release & for evacuation of people inside room under fire.

Post- Discharge Hooters cum Flasher are provided just outside hazard under protection
and will give Audio & visual indication of gas released.

Post Gas Discharge Indicators are provided just outside hazard under protection and will
give visual indication of Gas released inside room and not to enter the room.

5.0 PRESSURE VENTING AREA REQUIRED

The venting area is required to release excess pressure developed due to discharge of
gas (over & above 5 milli bar). Gravity operated Louver type Pressure venting Dampers
are provided in the hazard protected area.

6.0 OPERATION PHILOSOPHY

The “Inertech” IG 541 system comprises of a bank of cylinders wit valve (stored at
pressure of 300 bar); each connected to a release manifold via discharge hoses. A
controlled pressure of 60 bar is released from the pressure controller connected to the
cylinder valve. In order to enable the removal of a particular cylinder (for maintenance if
any), a check valve is available between the discharge hose and the manifold. Check
valve is normally in closed condition and can open only in the direction of flow. The
complete system works at 60 bar pressure.

Since the provided system is designed to protect, more than one volume (i.e. risk area),
the manifold is equipped with normally closed directional/selector valves, which are
actuated pneumatically. Small part of gas is tapped from the manifold and pressure is
reduced from 60 Bar to 8 Bar through Pressure Regulator, since the pilot pressure
required for the directional valve is 8 bar(max). In between Pressure Regulator and
Directional Valve, a Solenoid Valve is provided to achieve proper actuation of directional
valve provided to the hazard under fire. In addition, a manual operation device such as
handle is also provided on the Directional Valve. The directional valve, when opened,
will release IG 541 Gas into the protected area.

In each (Main & Reserve) cylinder bank one cylinder is provided with solenoid valve and
manual / pneumatic actuator termed as Master Cylinder and other cylinders which are
fitted with pneumatic actuators are termed as slave cylinders.

The system is capable of electric, manual actuation and can be released by one or more
of the following methods.

• AUTOMATIC RELEASE

The Automatic release is accomplished via detectors installed in the protected area
(detectors are installed on cross Zone principle to avoid accidental release of gas due to
malfunctioning / false alarm). As soon as a fire is detected by the detectors, the fire
signal from the fire alarm panel is sent to Gas Release Panel.

At the same time signal is provided to pre-discharge (Audio) signal unit from the panel to
allow personnel evacuation prior to discharge. Normally after a specified time delay
(settable, set time to be decided by client based on time required for personnel
evacuation, supplier recommends for set time of 120 sec.) the solenoid valve located on
the master “IG 541" cylinder valve assembly gets energised.
Simultaneously, respective solenoid valve/s provided for the selector / directional valve/s
gets energised through Panel to open directional valve pneumatically, so that gas
released from cylinder bank can be directed to the hazard under fire.

• MANUAL REMOTE RELEASE (BREAK GLASS TYPE)

Remote release is accomplished by breaking glass and pressing the push button at a
"Manual Release Push Button Station" and by pressing the push button at Gas Release
Panel. Once the button has been pressed, the system will be released as without time
delay described above.

• MANUAL EMERGENCY RELEASE

In the unlikely event of power failure, the system can be activated by the manual pull
lever of manual/pneumatic actuator mounted the solenoid valve of the Master "IG 541"
cylinder valve and consequently opening the directional valve/s through handle provided
on the Directional Valve for releasing the gas to the desired area.

Note: Warning shall be given to the occupants in the protected area before the manual
emergency release.

7.0 SYSTEM CONFIGURATIONS & SEQUENCE OF OPERATION.

Based on the "Single Largest Risk", largest protected volume (including room, false
ceiling & false floor) is 637.0 m3 which is for the Central Control Room, ESP & Computer
Room.

07 Nos. of 160 Ltr. Water Capacity cylinders are required as main cylinders. In order to
have 100% stand-by/reserve, additional 07 nos. of cylinders are provided permanently
connected to the system manifold.

The banks are arranged to operate simultaneously in case of fire by suitable control
logics as follows.
In case of fire in Central Control Room, ESP & Computer Room, the Fire Alarm Panel
will give the signal to Gas Release Panel, after cross zoning of the detectors and 24
VDC supply from gas release panel will be given to solenoid SOV- 1 (Main or Standby)
on master cylinder which subsequently operates 07 cylinders (Main or Standby)
pneumatically through actuation hose. The same time, supply will be given to the
solenoid valves (PSOV-2) provide for directional valve, which get actuated electrically
and part of gas through solenoid valve operates Directional Valve DV-2 pneumatically
and gas will be released to the hazard through respective pipe networks.

Plant Control Room:

Fire detection system for plant control room comprises Control Equipment Room - LHS,
Engineering Central Control Room, ESP & Computer Room, Control Equipment Room -
RHS, & DCDB Room, Engineer & Shift Incharge room. Fire Alarm Panel with SMF Lead
Acid batteries is located at Central control Room which will be operated on 230VAC
supply. Both Multi sensor & Photo electric detectors are provided in cross zoning
method. For above false ceiling areas , the detector is provided with response indicator.
Manual Call Points & Sounders are provided at strategic locations. Control Modules are
provided for integration with Inert gas system and HVAC system.

Fire Alarm Panel with SMF Lead Acid batteries is located at Central control Room which
will be operated on 230V AC supply.

Fire alarm control panel:

Fire alarm control panel is the heart of the fire alarm and detection system. This plays
major role in the operation, it receives signal from detectors and other input devices and
transmit the signal to the sounder and output relays as per embedded program.

The main feature of the panel is addressability, in fire condition Panels LCD screen
shows detailed address E.g. “Detector no.xxx, Loop no.xx, Node no.x, control room,
floor no. or elevation of the bldg, T.G. bldg ON FIRE”.

All the detectors, Manual pull station, sounders, input module, output module are wired
in different loops and ultimately terminate in the loop card through which they can
directly communicate with panel.

One of the main features of the system is its complete, intelligent redundancy. This
means that electronic elements in the control panel are present in duplicate. The
occurrence of a fault in the active system causes the system to be switched over to the
second and system fault will be indicated. All functions, such as detection, triggering of
alarms, plain text indication and controlling of fire alarm devices etc. remain unaffected
by this occurrence.

Automatic electronic addressing: Ease and flexibility of maintaining the system. No need
to set the addresses of each and every loop element with binary/ rotary switches, thus
no need for detailed documentation for each loop element. Each element on the loop is
equipped with integrated short circuit isolator and can be fed from two sides. Thus upon
short or open circuit the loop will automatically re-establish via the intact-side and thus
all the other devices keep on functioning.

Addressable Smoke Detectors, heat detector and Multisensor detector:

The detectors are the pillars of the system, as they sense fire in the form of smoke (Co
and Co2) and heat and transmit the signal to the panel through loop cable.

In smoke detector dual chamber is there when smoke scatters the light beam then it
raises the alarm. Pre threshold and final value is fixed in that when reaches the pre
threshold then it raises the pre alarm and at final it gives fire alarm.

In heat Detector thermal sensor is present which senses fire and in this Pre threshold
and final value is given after sensation it follows the same procedure to raise the alarm.

In multi sensor both the sensors work together and follow the same procedure as
mention above. In Normal condition the LED of the detector blinks at regular interval and
where in fire condition it becomes steady. Steady Light LED shows the fire condition
from the detector.

Addressable Manual call point

It is the only device which can be manually operated. This is another input to the fire
alarm panel. Pushing In activates the device and raises the alarm.

Addressable Loop Sounder

It is provided for alarming of personnel from the effected rooms. The sounder is
connected in the same loop as detectors. When any of the input of the particular room
gives fire alarm, then sounder of the same room starts sounding to evacuate the
building quickly. Sounders are also addressable it flashes the address.

Output/ control Module

This is an addressable device which provides relay output contacts for integration with
other facilities, which shall operate once the signal is received from the fire alarm panel.
Eg. Solenoid valve, different tripping relays etc.

Response Indicators

Response Indicators are used as an auxiliary indication for detectors that are located in
closed spaces (i.e., not visible. For example: above false ceilings, in closed rooms, etc).
Detectors are equipped with a terminal to allow connection to the Response Indicator.
Response Indicators contain a led which lights up as soon as the connected detector
detects fire.

Siren

A Siren is provided along with the fire alarm detection system, to alert the personnel
outside the areas of protection and to for immediate attention.

Loop Cable
Loop Cable connecting the panel & devices is run all along the areas where the
detection is being provided.
