Air traffic control (ATC) is one of the most amazing professions in the
world which provides you challenging role every day, handsome salary
package and excellent working environment. The aim of Air Traffic
Control Service is to ensure a safe, orderly and expeditious flow of air
traffic.
When we think of an Air Traffic Controller, the image of men and women
working behind the glasses of Airport Control Tower controlling the
movements of aircraft, comes to our mind; however ATC(Air Traffic
Control) is much complex job than that. Air Traffic control includes
coordination of aircraft movements, to provide separation between the
aircraft, directing aircraft during landing and take-off, guide the pilot
during emergency or bad weather.

Recruitment Process
With the unprecedented growth in air traffic density there will be large
requirement of Air traffic control officers (ATCOs) in India. On behalf of
Govt. of India Airports Authority of India (AAI) recruits Air Traffic
Controllers for civil aviation air traffic control/management. AAI is a
Mini-Ratna Public Sector Undertaking(PSU) under the Ministry of Civil
Aviation. The selection procedure includes a written test, voice test
followed by Interview. In this post I will discuss about how to prepare for
the written test of ATC Recruitment examination. First of all, let us see
who can apply for this prestigious profession.
 Eligibility Criteria
1. Regular full time Bachelor’s Degree (3 years) in Science (B.Sc.) with
Physics and Mathematics from a recognized university with
minimum 60% marks OR full time regular Bachelor’s degree in
Engineering/Technology (B.E./B.Tech) in any disciplines of
Electronics/Telecommunications/ Information Technologywith
minimum 60% marks.(Updated:02/01/2016)
2. The candidate shall have minimum proficiency in both spoken and
written English of the level of 10+2 standard. He/she shall also attain
the ICAO language minimum proficiency level 4 (operational) for
the purpose of issue of license or rating. Any candidate who is not
able to attain ICAO proficiency level 4 or above during the training,
his /her services are liable to be terminated.

Well don’t worry about the ICAO Language minimum proficiency level
4 condition because once selected you will be provided English
improvement classes during initial training at AAI Training Institutes. So
candidates with poor English background don’t need to panic about this
condition.

 Written Test
From this year AAI(Airport Authority of India) has decided to conduct
the written test online. There will be total 120 questions which are divided
in two sections i.e. Technical and Non-technical. Technical Section
comprises questions from Physics and Mathematics whereas Non-
Technical section tests the general knowledge, English, reasoning and
numerical ability of the applicant.
 Technical Section
It will have total 60 questions which will be divided in two parts: 30
questions of Physics and Mathematics each. The level of questions will
be of 12th standard with a few questions testing graduation level
knowledge of the applicant. As AAI(Airport Authority of India) has
started putting only Physics and Mathematics questions from 2015. I have
listed some of the topics for you which were asked in JE (ATC) exam
conducted on 26th April 2015.
Physics: Dimensions of Force/Work/Torque/Energy etc., Numerical on
Newton’s Laws of Motion, Angular momentum numerical, Numerical on
static Friction, Torque variation, type of forces: centripetal and
centrifugal, Potential and Kinetic Energy formula based numerical,
Theoretical question on definition of diffraction/refraction/Total Internal
Reflection/Reflection, Vector and Scalar Product, Wave motion,
Theoretical questions on Transverse and Longitudinal waves, Numerical
on wavelength of Lyman, Balmer, Paschen series, various Atomic
models, Numerical on Hook’s Law,Elasticity, Diode Numerical, doping
in Semiconductors, p-type and n-type semiconductors, Barkhausen
stability criterion, Ideal Gas equation, Specific heat theoretical question,
Numerical on resolving power of prism, volume based numerical,
numerical on level rise of a field of defined area due to rain,Satellite
communication numerical like orbital velocity, Escape velocity etc.

Mathematics: The topics include Convergence and Divergence, Matrix

(Eigen Value, types of matrices e.g. Idempotent matrix, to find out
determinant of matrix, to check consistency of given equation, rank of
matrix), Coordinate Geometry (No. of tangents of a sphere, condition of
co-linearity and to check collinear points, line equation, parabola, ellipse
etc.), simple Probability problem, Mathematical induction, Equation of
planes and relationship between planes, Vector planes, Limits,
Trigonometry, Differential equations, Complex variables, Simple
questions on integration and differentiation, questions on Graphs theory.
 Non-Technical Section
It will have 60 questions which include questions from General
Knowledge, Reasoning, Numerical ability/Quantitative problems and
English. The standard of questions is same as of SSC CGLE . English
covers almost one third of this section i.e. 20 questions. 15 questions from
Numerical ability and Reasoning each and 10 questions from GK.
English will cover antonym/synonym, direct/indirect speech, idioms,
conjunction, active and passive voices, one word substitution, one
passage, error correction, prepositions.
Some important points to be considered for the written test:

 Keep this in mind that unlike most of the PSU exams, there will be
no negative marking, so my personal advice will be to attempt all the
questions.
 Non-Technical section has quite easy questions so first attempt this
section (if online test settings allow it), it will ensure that you don’t
miss easy question due to paucity of time or last minute hurry.
 Technical section has Physics and Math questions so preparation can
be started with NCERT books of 11th and 12th
 Syllabus of Physics and Maths can be covered by referring IIT-JEE
prelims questions. Go through the notes from reputed institutes for
this. This will cover almost 50-70% of technical section.
 In Physics, focus more on Mechanics and Thermodynamics in
particular.
 Similarly in Math. focus on Matrix, Coordinate Geometry and
Differential Equations.
 Some of the questions in technical section will be of graduation level
so please refer 1st year Physics and Math. of B.Tech./B.Sc. but my
advice will be to focus more on IIT-JEE notes of 12th standard as it
will cover major portion of the section.
 As reasoning covers almost 33% marks of the non-technical portion
so practicing this will be a good choice instead of memorizing GK
facts forms a small part of the exam.
 Practice SSC CGLE test papers for Numerical Ability and Reasoning
preparation.
 Also overall practice can be done from NDA’s previous years papers
as it will cover Physics, Math, English and GK.
 For English preparation, NDA and SSC CGLE test papers will
achieve the goal.
 There will be no sectional cut-off i.e. selection for the interview will
be on the basis of overall marks in the two sections

P.S. : This article was written with reference to AAI ATC Exam held in
April 2015, but as level of questions or important topics/subjects keep
changing with each exam, I would like to add here that prepare the
Graduation level Maths. and Physics as well. I am saying this because in
Dec. 2015 Exam there were a good number of questions from Graduation
level. You can check the level of questions in my other article (link given
below). So covering the Grad. level syllabus will magnify the chances of
clearing the online test.
In the next post I will try to help you in preparing for ATC Interview. Here
is my new post about How to Prepare for Air Traffic Controller Interview.

In this post I am extending my last article which was about the written test
preparation for the post of Jr. Executive (ATC) examination. Post written
test result, the successful candidates (around three times of total vacancies
in number) are called for voice test and interview which is the last part of
the selection process.

Let’s first understand the importance of Job interview. It’s a tool used by
employer (or representative of employing organization) for the selection
of desired employee(s).An interview is basically conducted to test the
communication skills, presence of mind and quick decision-making
capability of the candidate.
Generally Interviews are held in four cities viz. New Delhi (For Northern
Region), Mumbai (Western region), Chennai (Southern Region), Kolkata
(Eastern and NE Regions).
I will start with the Voice test as it precedes the interview.

Voice Test for Air Traffic Controller

On the day of interview, first you will have to undergo a voice test which
is followed by an interview. Voice test is mandatory for the post of
ATC(Air Traffic Controller) as the job profile requires day to day basis
interaction with Pilots as well as with various other ATC units. So the
voice test is conducted to ensure that candidate has good English language
speaking fluency and is not stammering. To check this, a printed page is
given which is required to be read by the candidate. The page basically
has some sample phraseology used by Pilots/ATC. This is just a cake walk
for the candidates with a clear voice.
EDIT: I have written an article on ‘How to prepare for Voice Test’.
It has two sample Voice Test papers. You can read the article here:

 How to Prepare for AAI ATC Voice Test

 Important Questions/Answers for AAI ATC Interview

 Read and Share AAI ATC Interview Experiences

Note: Although, on your Interview letter it is mentioned that candidate

will have an option to respond either in Hindi or English but my advice is
to keep your conversation in English only with the official conducting this
test.
After the voice test you will be asked to wait for your turn for the
interview. Just relax during this waiting period and try not to pay attention
to the candidates boasting of their academic background or no. of tests
they have cleared. Remember that you all are in the same boat at that
moment and no one is superior or inferior. Avoid negative thoughts as it
may hamper your chances of getting selected.
Now let’s move to the interview round which is the final hurdle for you
to be part of this prestigious profession.

Interview for Air Traffic Controller :

It will be a Panel interview where senior officials of AAI(Airport
Authority of India) will be judging your knowledge and communication
skills. Usually the interview board consists of 4 to 5 panellist.
So can we cross this hurdle with ease? Yes, you can do it. Here are some
important points you should consider during the interview:

1. Respond to the questions in English only, it really helps.

2. Do not be anxious during the interview, they can sense it. So be
comfortable.
3. Be yourself and do not try to bluff at all. In case you don’t know the
answer, simply admit to it instead of giving a wrong answer.
4. Sometimes they will ask you to describe one of the objects installed
in the Interview room like TV, Projector etc. which is basically for
testing your fluency of spoken English. So just read a bit about these
objects.
5. Try to make eye contact while answering the questions.
6. Do not tell them that you have cleared some other PSU’s exam or are
waiting for joining letter; it will create a doubt in the mind of
interviewer about selecting you, because no one wants to select a
candidate who may leave the organization any time.
7. Last but not the least, have a smile on your face; it is the best thing
to have…even in trouble, when you don’t know the answer!! But do
remember that excessive smile reflects nervousness and lack of
confidence.

Edit: Memory Test: Short term memory is very essential for an ATC
Officer. So be ready for this test where the panellist will test your short
term memory. What they really do is each one of them will ask you one
question one by one and you have to listen and remember all these
questions, then you will be asked to answer all the questions in same
sequence as they were asked. So you will be required to remember 5
questions, their sequence and then answer accordingly.

Books for ATC Exam: For the preparations of any exam whether its
UPSC, SSC or some PSU exam, two questions that instantly strike our
mind are what to read ? and from where to read ? If we talk about the
AAI JE ATC Exam in particular, then answer of the first question is very
well known to all of us. For those who do not know the answer, I am
repeating it here: as per the exam pattern decided by AAI, we are required
to prepare 6 subjects in total for getting selected for the voice test and
interview phase. These six subjects are Mathematics, Physics, Reasoning,
Numerical aptitude, English and General Knowledge.

 Check ATC Exam (held on 26.12.2015) Result Here.

 Checkout AAI ATC Syllabus Here

Now comes the next question “from where to read all these subjects??”
In this article, I will try to answer about important books that will help
you in opening the gates of interview round. I have prepared a list of books
for each subject. As per the AAI ATC Exam, the classification of these
six subjects is as:
1. Technical Section:

 Mathematics (30 Questions)

 Physics (30 Questions)

2. Non-Technical Section:

 Reasoning (15 Questions)

 Numerical Ability/Aptitude (15 Questions)
 English (20 Questions)
 General Knowledge (10 Questions)

A. Books for Technical Section:

So let’s start with Technical Section preparation for which we need to
cover Mathematics and Physics.
Mathematics and Physics:
Mathematics and Physics preparations can be divided into two parts i.e.
School level (includes 11th and 12th standard) and College level
(Graduation level). Concepts and Theory of 11 th and
12th Mathematics/Physics can be easily covered from NCERT books or
State Board Books. All you need is to cover solved examples and
important formulae. Just practice the solved examples and keep revising
the formulae. Note down formulae on a plain sheet and keep revising it as
and when you get the free time. I used to paste those formulae-written
pages on my room’s walls so that I can refer them anytime I want.
Important topics have already been discussed in some of my other posts
so you can put more focus on these topics.
One more important aspect of preparation is practice, so just practice
objective questions (sample or previous year papers) of IIT-JEE and
AIEEE. Notes from any reputed institutes will be very useful for the same.
Graduation level maths/physics can easily be covered from the books
which all of you read in first and/or second year/semesters. Every
university has its own set of recommended books but syllabus is almost
same in every university so it will not matter from which
college/university you completed your graduation.
Other Useful Books for Technical Section Preparations:

1. Concept of Physics Vol. I and Vol. II (Author:H.C. Verma): A

very good book to build your concepts in Physics. It is very
impressive book in fact. I will recommend this book for practice of
Numericals with higher difficulty level. Just go with 15-20
numericals from each chapter (Solved examples + Exercise
Questions). Do not go for questions that are very lengthy or take 4-5
minutes to be solved.
2. Maths XI and XII (Author: R.D. Sharma): Another good book
used extensively by students preparing for IIT-JEE as this book offers
a wide variety of mathematical problems.
3. NDA Previous Years Solved Papers: These can help you a lot
because they can be used as practice sets for the exam as they cover
Maths and Physics. Please remember to omit Chemistry part as it is
of no use for AAI ATC exam.

B. Books for Non-Technical Section:

Now let us find the books which can be used for the easier part of the AAI
ATC Exam i.e. Non-Technical Section. It is a kind of cake-walk for most
the students. You can easily score 50+ marks in this section provided you
are good at Reasoning/Aptitude and English.

Reasoning and Aptitude:

Well, there is no price for guessing the book for these two subjects. It
is Verbal and Non-verbal Reasoning by R S Aggarwal. It is a very
famous book which, I guess, every student who is preparing for
competitive exams must be aware of. Practice 30-40 questions from each
chapter of this book and hopefully you will be in a good position to
attempt 30 questions of the non-tech section of AAI ATC Exam.
English:
There are 20 questions from English in the exam, so you must put extra
efforts to cover this subject. It will be easier for the candidates who are
already good at English and they need not to put any extra efforts, but
most of students, just like me, find it a little bit difficulty to attempt
English related questions. So my suggestion would be prepare from SSC
(CGLE) English notes of any good coaching institute.

 Also practice previous year papers of SSC CGLE for improving

chances of scoring well in English part of the exam.
 Another suggestion will be to practice English Section of NDA
previous years question papers.
 Word Power Made Easy is another good book if you really want to
improve your English vocabulary.
 Objective General English (Author: S.P. Bakshi): A very useful
book for the preparation of English for most of the competitive
exams.

General Knowledge:
It covers only 10 marks but scoring these 10 marks is a Herculean task.
You would be required to cover GK topics like History, Geography,
Economy, General Science and Current Affairs. So my suggestion will be
to give least importance to this lengthiest part (in terms of syllabus as well
as preparations) of the non-tech section. Those guys who want to cover
GK as well can prepare GK part from SSC or NDA notes. For current
affairs refer one of the following magazines (last 6 months):

1. Pratiyogita Darpan.
2. Competition Success Review.
3. You can practice SSC/NDA previous years papers as well.

So that’s all about the books for the preparation of AAI ATC Exam. I
would like to give one more suggestion before ending this article that if
you buy a lot of books for each subject then you will end up getting
confused and frustrated. So buy one book for each subject, read it
thoroughly and revise it as many times as you can. Also this list is not the
full and final that you are bound to read from these books only to get
successful in the exam. If you have some another good book then just go
with it. Now as usual, I am ending my article with this beautiful quote by
Charles William Eliot:
“Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the
most accessible and wisest of counselors, and the most patient of
teachers.”
