Ideas for how the tool units of measure, and b) differentiate among perimeter, area, and volume and identify
can be used in PK-12 whether the application of the concept of perimeter, area, or volume is appropriate for a
given situation. This will allow the teacher to add photos or create diagrams for the
student’s assignment. The teacher will also provide example problems for the class to see
and a multiple choice “quiz” for the students to show what they know. The questions will
consist of word problems as well. The students will be able to take the quiz and the
results of the quiz will show the teacher if the students understand the concept or not.
2.SOL 6.1 (Reading): The student will participate in and contribute to small-group
activities. Within Edmodo, the teacher has the opportunity to create groups within the
class. The teacher will create virtual small groups that contains at least 5 students. For
example, the teacher is to create a reading assignment that involves reading short novels.
The teacher will assign the novels by groups and the groups are to read the novels
individually. The students will read chapter by chapter, and then discuss on Edmodo. The
teacher will provide questions for the groups to answer or allow the students to explain
what they have read so far in group discussions as well as class discussions.
SOL VS.4 (Virginia Studies): The student will demonstrate knowledge of life in the
Virginia colony by; a) explaining the importance of agriculture and its influence on the
institution of slavery, and c) describing everyday life in colonial Virginia. For the
assignment, the teacher will provide videos or articles (BrainPOP for example) for the
students to evaluate. The students are to then create a single paragraph explaining what they
have read/ watched. Once the teacher gets the feedback, they will then create a discussion
post, so that the class (and the teacher) could communicate about the topic together. For
better understanding, the teacher will ask the group what they thought was confusing about
the assignment or the topic. The class will then go over it within the group discussion.
4 Positives and 3 Positives:
challenges of using 1. Parents can be aware of the student’s progress in the class. They can access grades,
the tool assignments, and other school messages. The students must give parents a school code for
them to access Edmodo.
2. The program is free, user-friendly, and can be accessed from home.
3. The students can “break out of their shell” and express their selves in a new way. The
students now have a voice and can voice their opinions in topics and discussions. The
“quiet” students may see this program as a way to engage with their peers without the
feeling of embarrassment or social anxiety.
4. The teacher can post web links, videos and reminders to accommodate to any students
that may need extra help at home (or at school). The teacher can also share information
and ideas with other Edmodo teachers.
Challenges:
1. The website can be confusing, at first, for some students. The teacher should take the time
to go over the layout with the students while explaining what is expected from the
students. For elementary school users (PreK-3), the parents could also help the students
familiarize their selves with Edmodo.
2.Not all students may have access to the internet (or web links) at home.
3.It may be difficult to view some videos/photos on Edmodo at school due to restrictions.
The layout looks like a social media website. This could be a good thing; however, the
students have the ability to directly message other classmates about non-school related
topics. There are no restrictions when it comes to students directly messaging each other.
