SUBTOPIC 3 LECTURE 5

ASST. PROF. KRISTIAN AZUL

Vector quantity (same direction as v)
Product of object’s mass and velocity
Mass in motion

𝒑 = 𝒎𝒗
“The rate of change of the
momentum of an object is
equal to, and in the direction
of, the resultant force acting

𝒎𝒗𝒊 + 𝑭𝜟𝒕 = 𝒎𝒗𝒇

Initial Applied Final

Momentum Impulse Momentum
Effect of a force applied for a
certain amount of time.
Larger impulse means larger
change in momentum
*momentum change can be a change
in value and/or direction
Impulse can:
Increase/decrease the value of
momentum and/or change its
direction over a short/long
period of time.
You can have the same
impulse but different values of
force and time of application.
This is why your phone breaks if it
falls onto concrete and not when it falls
on your soft bed
𝒎𝒗𝒊 + 𝑭𝜟𝒕 = 𝒎𝒗𝒇
𝒎𝒗𝒊 + 𝑭𝜟𝒕 = 𝒎𝒗𝒇
𝒎𝒗𝒊 + 𝑭𝜟𝒕 = 𝒎𝒗𝒇
What will happen if
IMPULSE = 0?

𝒎𝒗𝒊 = 𝒎𝒗𝒇
CONSERVATION OF
MOMENTUM
Note that this is done along an
axis. If there is no impulse
along that axis, momentum is
conserved along that axis.

𝒎𝒗𝒊 = 𝒎𝒗𝒇
Initial momentum: mv = 1x5 = 5 to the left
Final momentum: mv = 5x1 = 5 to the left
a collision between particles
which occur in a very short
interval of time and during
which the colliding particles
exert relatively large forces
onto each other
During impact, the colliding
bodies will undergo a period
of deformation then a period
of restitution.
Period of Deformation

Period of Restitution
Common normal to the
surfaces in contact during
impact. V

LOI
Ratio of the relative velocities
of two particles before and
after impact
“bounciness”
Symbol: e
Perfectly Elastic: e = 1
Inelastic: 0<e<1
Perfectly Plastic: e=0
For any type, conservation of momentum
can be applied as long as there is no
impulse along the axis analyzed.
PERFECTLY PERFECTLY
INELASTIC
ELASTIC PLASTIC
Mechanical energy is
conserved.
Has no permanent
deformation on the object.
No heat is produced.
Before impact: After impact:
KE = (1/2)*(1000)*(20)^2 KE = (1/2)*(1000)*(10)^2 + (1/2)*(3000)*(10)^2
KE = 200,000 KE = 200,000
Billiard ball collision can be very close to elastic collision
Perfectly plastic collision is when the
objects stick together after
collision.
Mechanical energy is not conserved.
May have lasting deformation on
the object
Heat is produced.
Initial momentum: mv = 1x5 = 5 to the left
Final momentum: mv = 5x1 = 5 to the left
