protocol. The CPU and printer units have the following default TCP/IP addresses:
CPU 164.90.200.1
Printer 164.90.200.2

2-5
PrintMaster Service Manual

Note:
If only one PrintMaster unit is to be installed onto the network, use the default TCP/IP
addresses provided and skip to Configuring the Printer IP on page 2-7, using the
appropriate steps for your printer. Continue with Configuring the CPU IP and Localization
on page 2-8.
If multiple PrintMaster units are to be installed onto one network, use the following
procedure.
If multiple PrintMaster systems are to be installed onto a network, each CPU and printer unit must
have a unique IP address.
Each PrintMaster pair (CPU and printer) must be installed and configured separately as
follows:
1 Determine the IP address to be used for each CPU and printer pair. It is recommended that one
CPU/printer pair use the default addresses given previously. Change the other devices as
required.
For example:

PrintMaster 2 - CPU 164.90.200.3, Printer 164.90.200.4
PrintMaster 3 - CPU 164.90.200.5, Printer 164.90.200.6

Note:
The CPU and printer must be on the same subnet, 164.90.200.xx, to be able to communicate.
Change only the last field of the IP address.
2 Connect the first PrintMaster CPU/printer pair to the network. Do NOT connect any other
CPU/printer pairs to the network at this time.

Note:
Only ONE CPU/printer pair at a time should be connected to the network while the units are
being configured.
3 Follow the appropriate steps for your printer under Configuring the Printer IP on page 2-7, and
then proceed with Configuring the CPU IP and Localization on page 2-8 for the CPU/printer
pair.
4 Specify a unique node ID and node name for this PrintMaster CPU/printer pair. Make sure the
node name contains five uppercase characters.
5 Initiate a recording from a Spacelabs Medical monitor to the specified PrintMaster, and then
confirm proper operation.
6 Remove the PrintMaster CPU/printer pair from the network, and then connect the next
PrintMaster CPU/printer pair.
7 Repeat steps 3 through 6 for all other PrintMaster CPU/printer pairs.
8 When all units have been properly configured, connect all the PrintMaster CPU/printer pairs to
the network.

Printer Operation

Loading Paper
PrintMaster uses a slide-out paper cassette which accepts up to 500 pages of 8.5 x 11 inch or
A4 (21 x 29.7 cm) paper. Refer to the printer handbook/CD for paper loading instructions.
PrintMaster beeps every 15 seconds if the printer is out of paper. The printer display indicates
PAPER OUT until this situation is corrected.

Caution
While the printer is off-line or out of paper, it ignores any new alarm that would
normally start a recording.
The default paper size must be set to the size of paper loaded in the paper cassette.
Refer to the printer handbook/CD for instructions.

Clearing Paper Jams

If the PAPER JAM indicator flashes on the printer display, check these areas for paper
problems:
paper input area
under top cover
paper exit area
Instructions for clearing paper jams are provided in the printer handbook/CD.

Terminating a Print Job

To terminate a multiple-page print job currently in progress, power the printer OFF until the front
panel lights go out, then power it back ON. This cancels any print job in process, but pending jobs
waiting in the print queue are not affected.

Warning
Do not power the CPU OFF. This erases the current and all pending print jobs.

Replacing the Toner Cartridge

When TONER LOW appears on the display panel, replace the toner cartridge. Approximately
100 additional pages can be printed before the toner is totally depleted. Refer to the printer
handbook/CD for instructions on toner cartridge replacement.

Network Tests

Note:
This test requires that setup for the CPU has been completed (Node ID, Name, etc.).
1 With the PrintMaster CPU and printer powered OFF, connect the LAN cable to the CPU
Ethernet interface connector on the rear panel.
2 Power ON the PrintMaster printer, CPU, Ultraview Care Network/PCMS monitor, and LAN
repeater.
3 Insert an ECG module into the monitor, connect the simulator, power the simulator ON, and
display a waveform on the monitor screen.
4 Set up the monitors recorder assignments to print to the appropriate PrintMaster unit.
5 Touch RECORD and ECG to initiate a recording.
6 If the printer fails to operate, access the monitors Biomed menu and verify that the node name
appears as one of the recorder names. Select that name as the PRIMARY recorder (if the name
does not appear, select a blank recorder key and enter the correct node name for the
PrintMaster system).
To view the NODE DIRECTORY:
a Touch MONITOR SETUP.
b Access the Biomed privileged access menu per your monitors service manual.
c Touch NETWORK SETUP.
d Touch NODE DIRECTORY.
The PrintMaster node name should appear on the directory list.

Note:
The PrintMaster system uses SNMP to derive printer status to determine whether to accept
print jobs based on printer status. This prevents queuing large numbers of recordings if the
printer jams, runs out of paper, etc. This interface works with the following printers:
- HP2200n, dn, and dtn
- HP4100n, tn, and dtn
- HP4200n
- HP2300n
- Lexmark T520 and M410
- Okidata Okipage 18n and 24n.
The printer must be configured for a static IP, and the PrintMaster must be configured to
print to that IP.
HP printers are language-dependent, except for HP4200n and HP2300n. If the front panel
of a qualified printer (except HP4200n and HP2300n) is set to a language other than
English, SNMP may not function.

System Problems
Note:
This chapter does not cover printer troubleshooting. Refer to the printer handbook for
information on troubleshooting the printer.

Bootup Error Troubleshooting

Perform the following procedure if, at bootup, the system displays an Unable to repair file
system message as a result of an improper powerdown:
1 At the # prompt, type fsck -F ufs /dev/rdsk/c0d0s0 (case-sensitive).
Note:
The spaces are required; 0 = zero.
2 Press ENTER.
3 Answer Y (yes) to all screen prompts.
4 When complete, press CTRL+D to continue with the bootup process and display the login
screen.

Quick Check
Printer refuses to initiate a print job
1 At the Ultraview Care Network/PCMS monitor, touch RECORD and then touch any flashing
parameter key. Watch the message line for an Unable to record requested channel
message. If this message does not appear, skip to step 3.
2 If this message does appear:
a Check that power cables, Ethernet cables, and connectors are secure and in their correct
positions. Try to record from another bed on the same network.
b Check the printer control panel for any error conditions (paper out, jams, etc.). If found,
correct them and repeat step 1.
c Cycle the printers power OFF until the LEDs go out and then on again. Repeat step 1.
d If steps a, b, and c do not correct the problem, stop and start the application using the
PrintMaster Maintenance Menu. Verify that in approximately two minutes, the printer
prints a banner page containing the systems software version, node ID, and node name.
If a duplicate node ID exists, this condition will also be reported.
e On the Ultraview Care Network/PCMS monitor, access the Biomed menu and check the
node directory for the presence of the PrintMaster node name. Enter the Recorder Setup
menu and verify that PRIMARY is selected for this printer.

4-1
PrintMaster Service Manual

3 If the message does not appear, the monitor has acknowledged that the RECORD request was
sent to the printer.
a Ensure that the Ultraview Care Network/PCMS monitor is set up correctly for this printer
and not for another on the network.
b Reset the system as explained in Shutting Down or Resetting the System on page 2-2.

Extended Check
Printer refuses to initiate a print job
1 Perform the steps under Quick Check on page 4-1.
2 Power the PrintMaster CPU and printer OFF after performing a system shutdown.
3 Connect the CPU and printer directly using a 10BaseT crossover cable (P/N 012-0602-xx).
4 Power the printer ON first, then the CPU.
5 Wait (approximately five minutes) for the startup page to print.
If the startup page prints, it may be a network-related problem. Check for correct network
cabling and verify operation of the CPU Ethernet card (refer to Network Status Menu on
page 3-4).
Note:
If the screen remains blank for more than three minutes following a successful memory test,
the most probable cause is failure of the hard drive to boot up the operating system.
If the startup page does not print, try pinging the printer as follows:
a At the desktop login prompt, type root and press ENTER.
b Type pm90838 as the password and press ENTER
c At the # prompt, type ping printmaster and press ENTER.
If the command does not display printmaster alive, then the CPU cannot
communicate to the printer. Verify cabling and proper connection.
If the ping command is successful, verify the PrintMaster print service is enabled by
typing enable printmaster and pressing ENTER.
d If your system still does not print, contact your service representative.

CPU display will not go into graphical windows screen

1 Power OFF the CPU as specified in Shutting Down or Resetting the System on page 2-2.
2 Ensure that the keyboard and mouse are properly connected to the CPU box. Failure of these
devices to properly communicate with the CPU box will inhibit the unit from completing the
initialization routine.
3 Power ON the system.
