Loading Paper
The system printer module operates with two paper trays, one for 2-channel recordings and
another for 4-channel recordings. When the printer is out of paper, it alerts you by sounding one
high-pitched beep approximately every eight seconds and by flashing the PAPER OUT LED.
To replace paper in a system printer module:
1 Press the tray eject button located above the PAPER OUT LED.
2 Remove the paper tray.
Warning
If you remove the printer module from the bedside monitor to load paper, instead of
removing only the paper tray, an immediate loss of any pending print jobs occurs.
3 Discard the old cardboard retainer inside the tray (2-channel only).
4 Remove the label from the new paper, keeping the cardboard retainer in place around one end
(2-channel only).
5 Lay the paper tray down on a flat surface with the paper roller to your left. Position the cue
marks on the paper as illustrated in Figure 2-1 on page 2-2 (the red line seen on one side of the
paper stack denotes the end placed at the bottom of the paper tray).
Note:
Cue mark orientation differs for 2- and 4-channel paper. The 2-channel cue marks must
appear face up at the bottom of the paper; 4-channel cue marks must appear face up at the
top of the paper. (Refer to Figure 2-1.)
6 Flip over the top sheet of paper so that it no longer lays on the paper stack.
2-1
System Printer Service Manual
7 Insert the paper stack all the way into the paper compartment (keep the top sheet out).
8 Flip the top sheet over onto the top of the tray and verify that the cue mark appears on the
correct side (top for 4-channel; bottom for 2-channel) and is face up.
9 Pull the paper over the paper roller as shown in Figure 2-1.
Note:
If the paper does not extend past the paper roller, the printer cannot feed paper past its
printhead.
10 Insert the paper tray into the module until it is flush with the module front panel. After reloading
the paper, the paper feed mechanism ejects one sheet to verify proper paper feeding. If the
paper tray size has been changed or the unit has just been plugged in, the printers software
version will be printed.
Caution
When the printer is out of paper or is placed OFF-line (UNIT OFF key), it will ignore any
new printer requests or alarm conditions.

Overview
Caution
Observe precautions for handling electrostatic-sensitive devices!
Note:
Never touch electrostatic-sensitive electronic components without following proper anti-
static procedures, including the use of an ESD wrist band and mat. An electrostatic
discharge from your fingers can permanently damage electronic components.
All static-sensitive electronic components are packaged in static-shielding bags. Retain the
bag for repackaging the component, should you need to store it or return it to Spacelabs
Medical for any reason.
Cleaning, preventive maintenance, and safety checks should be performed annually and
following any product disassembly/assembly. Preventive maintenance and safety checks
must be performed by trained personnel only.
Cleaning/Disinfecting
Warning
Use only recommended cleaning solutions, or you may void the manufacturers
warranty.
Harsh chemical agents degrade plastics and will compromise the safety of the
device.
Disconnect the equipment from the patient and the electrical supply before cleaning.
Do no allow liquid to enter the interior of the module or monitoring equipment.
Do no immerse the equipment or cables in water or cleaning solutions.
Do not autoclave.

electrical safety at least every 180 days.
Performance Tests
4-2
System Printer Service Manual
Performance Test
Maintenance
The performance test is a series of internal tests that provide a functional check of the printer
module. These tests can be used as an initial assessment of printer performance or to complete a
final functional check following unit repair.
The performance test first checks the internal hardware and prints out any failures noted. Internal
tests include a thermal array loop back test, motor current test, and a memory test. This test
prompts you to initiate key sequences to verify the front panel membrane switches and LED
operation. Both paper trays are tested to ensure proper functioning of the cue mark sensor, door
open switch, tray size switch, and print quality. By analyzing test strips printed during the
performance test, printer performance can be verified.
To initiate the printer module performance test:
1 Remove the module from the monitor and install a 4-channel paper tray.
2 Plug one end of an SDLC test cable assembly (P/N 175-0865-00) into the SDLC connector at
the back of the printer module and the other end into its corresponding SDLC connector inside
the module slot of the monitor.
Note:
This cable is a short SDLC extender cable with the SDLC clock wires disabled. When the print
module detects no SDLC clock, it goes into a test-ready mode.
3 Hold in the UNIT OFF switch while the module goes through its POST sequence (approximately
five seconds).
4 When the printer emits a continual beep, release the UNIT OFF switch. The beep stops, the
green front panel LED flashes, and the printer generates the following printout:
Note:
If an error is detected during the previous portion of the test, an error code is indicated on the
UNIT OFF and PAPER OUT LEDs. To interpret these codes, refer to Self-Test Error Codes on
page 5-1.
9 After pushing the last button, the printer should start printing test data. Verify that the text and
graphic prints legibly and that the grids on the sheets containing charts and symbols print
evenly.
10 When finished printing, you are prompted to replace the 4-channel tray with the 2-channel tray.
4-3
System Printer Service Manual
11 When replaced, verify that the printer starts printing as soon as the tray is inserted. Again
inspect the print quality as was done in step 9.
12 When printing is completed, the test information is ready for evaluation.
Note:
The gray pattern test detects missing dots on the printhead or gross imperfections. It should
not be used as a judgment tool for print density (thermal paper is not uniform in gray-scale
printing). Use the analog tests as a demonstration of the printers capabilities.
5 On sheet 6, verify that each paper perforation between sheets always stays between the
printed arrows (Figure 4-1).
6 Verify that the 12-volt signal remains between the arrows (Figure 4-2).
4-4
System Printer Service Manual
7 Verify that the temperature remains between +20 and +40 C (Figure 4-3).
Maintenance
Figure 4-3: Temperature position
8 Verify that the peak of the signal waveform remains above the top solid line (Figure 4-4).
9 Verify that the baseline of the waveform is lower than the bottom solid line (excluding the area
within one major division on either side of the gray cue mark) (Figure 4-5).
10 Verify that the printhead resistance (ph. res.) falls within 50 ohms of the resistance value
printed on the printhead (visible with paper tray removed) (Figure 4-6).
4-5
System Printer Service Manual
11 The strip shown in Figure 4-7 plots current and voltage for the 12-volt supply that supplies
power to the printhead. As more data points are plotted, the current increases. The 90469
automatically limits the current draw to 3 amps. Verify that the end of the trace for printhead
current limit is within three minor divisions (3 mm) of the solid line (ignore the last blip).
Note:
The 119-0251-xx external power supply self-regulates the current draw. If the 90469 module is
installed in any product using this power supply, it will never reach the
3-amp trip level, and this portion of the test can be ignored.
Printhead Alignment
The printhead requires realignment if it has been disassembled or if the print copy shows signs of
being non-uniform.
To test the printhead's alignment:
1 Remove the module from the monitor and install the 4-channel paper tray.
2 Plug one end of the SDLC test cable assembly (P/N 175-0865-00) into the SDLC connector at
the back of the printer module and the other end into its corresponding SDLC connector inside
the module slot of the monitor/module housing.
3 Press and hold the SLOW button while the module goes through its POST sequence
(approximately five seconds).
4 When the unit beeps and the green module-active LED flashes, release the SLOW button. The
printer should eject a sheet of blank paper.
4-6
System Printer Service Manual
5 Verify that both the UNIT OFF and PAPER OUT LEDs are flashing.
Maintenance
6 Press STOP and verify that only the UNIT OFF LED is flashing.
7 Press SLOW to initiate a continuous X-pattern print. (Press STOP at any time to cease printing
this pattern; press SLOW to continue).
8 Verify that print quality is even for all X's printed. If it is uneven in density or has areas with no
printing, the printhead requires alignment.
To align the printhead:
1 Remove the module from the monitor/module housing.
2 Lay the module down with the printhead assembly up and the paper tray facing you.
3 Plug one end of the SDLC test cable assembly (P/N 175-0865-00) into the SDLC connector at
the back of the printer module and the other end into its corresponding SDLC connector inside
the module slot of the monitor/module housing.
4 Press and hold the SLOW button while the module goes through its POST sequence
(approximately 5 seconds).
5 When the unit beeps and the green module active LED flashes, release the SLOW button.
6 Verify that both the UNIT OFF and PAPER OUT LEDs are flashing.
7 Press STOP and verify that only the UNIT OFF LED is flashing.
8 Loosen the three Phillips screws on the printhead, and then snug the two outer screws (refer to
Figure 4-11 on page 4-11). (It is not necessary to remove the stainless steel module cover
plate.)
9 Press SLOW to initiate printing the continuous X pattern.
10 Adjust the two printhead eccentric hex screws until correct printing occurs.
11 Firmly tighten the center screw, followed by the two outer Phillips screws.
12 Press STOP and then press UNIT OFF.
13 Press SLOW to run the density test. Visually check to make sure printing is uniform from one
end of the test to the other.
14 If it is uniform, continue to the next step. If it is not uniform, remove the SDLC cable from the
module and replace it to initiate a module reset. Repeat the alignment procedures starting at
step 4.
15 Press STOP and then press CONTINUE to run the gray test. Verify that the pattern is uniform
without any white lines.
16 Press STOP to end the gray test.

positions for reassembly (Figure 4-10).
6 At the printhead assembly (Figure 4-11), locate the crossbar support. Free the crossbar from
the chassis by gently spreading the chassis apart at the point where the crossbar connects with
the outside chassis. When the chassis is wide enough to allow the crossbar shaft to be pulled
from its chassis hole, pull the crossbar up until it's just above the chassis. Then pull the crossbar
sideways to pull its other end from the chassis hole.
Note:
A small spacer is installed on the left side of the crossbar shaft. Note its position for correct
reassembly. Ensure that you remove this spacer and save it for reassembly.
7 Lift the printhead assembly (with the ribbon cable still attached) up and carefully lay it down to
the rear of the printer module.
Note:
Leave the ribbon cable attached to the printhead assembly. Free the printhead assembly by
removing this cable at the logic PCBA end. This cable cannot be removed from the printhead
assembly without first disassembling the printhead, making realignment necessary before
reuse.
8 Lift out the logic PCBA as follows:
a Raise the end of the logic PCBA nearest the motor assembly so that the cable assemblies
attached at the bottom clear the motor assembly.
b Pull the logic PCBA away from the chassis and free the SDLC connector.

3 Lift out the subframe along with the transparent paper tray cover (Figure 4-13). Carefully note
the alignment of paper tray cover for reassembly.
4 Remove the trigger assembly by lifting up its end until the spring inside it becomes free (prevent
the spring from falling out). Raise the trigger above the small chassis pin that is inserted through
the assembly (Figure 4-14).
5 Remove the trigger by pulling it out the front of the printer module (Figure 4-14).

Trigger Assembly
To assemble the trigger assembly:
1 Insert the trigger shaft through the hole in the front of the module above the PAPER OUT label.
Align the shaft so that its hollow side faces towards the motor assembly.
2 Insert the spring into the hollow part at the end of the shaft.
3 Lift the end of the shaft up and position it so the pin coming up from the chassis lines up with
the hole in the trigger shaft.
4 Using a small pointed object (e.g., screwdriver), push the end of the spring back and out of the
way of the hole in the trigger shaft so that the chassis pin can be inserted through it.
Note:
Ensure that the hollow part of the trigger shaft is against the spring barrier (pointing towards
the motor assembly). Otherwise the spring cannot stay in place and will come out.
5 Release the trigger shaft. Ensure that everything remains in place and functions properly when
the paper tray eject button is pressed (do not allow the trigger assembly to lift up while you are
testing its operation).
6 Reinstall the subframe to hold the trigger assembly in place (refer to Subframe on page 4-14).
Subframe
To assemble the subframe:
1 Insert the tab on the transparent paper tray cover into the subframe slot.
2 Insert the tabs on the paper tray cover into the matching slots on the chassis.
3 Insert the subframe into the alignment slots on the chassis.
4 Push the subframe down, ensuring that the trigger assembly's chassis pin correctly mates.
5 Verify that the trigger assembly functions correctly.
6 Insert the single screw securing the subframe to the chassis.
7 Ensure that the paper tray cover is correctly installed.
8 Tighten the screw in step 6 until snug.
Motor Assembly
To install the motor assembly:
1 Insert the motor shaft into the gear hole on the subframe and ensure that the gears properly
mesh and that the cable exits the motor on the side away from the module front panel.
2 Position the motor grounding spring at the top motor screw hole.
3 Insert the two screws securing the motor to the chassis and firmly tighten.

Maintenance
To install the logic PBCA and printhead assembly:
1 Align the logic PCBA (component side up) above the chassis so the four cables can be
attached.
2 Connect the following cables:
LED cable (J7)
Membrane switch assembly (J5) (align the red wire with pin #1 on the connector)
Motor wiring harness (J3)
Printhead assembly (J1) (align the red wire with pin #1 on the connection)
3 Raise and tilt the PCBA slightly to insert the SDLC connector into its place on the chassis.
4 Lower the logic PCBA into place, ensuring that the two chassis stand-offs go through the correct
holes on the PCBA.
5 Replace the two clear plastic spacers onto the two standoffs.
6 Replace the following screws:
Three screws holding the logic PCBA
Two screws holding the SDLC connector to the chassis
7 Tighten the SDLC connector screws firmly and then tighten the logic PCBA screws until snug.
Printhead Assembly
To install the printhead assembly:
1 Position the printhead assembly above its correct placement in the printer module (the ribbon
cable is already attached to the printhead assembly and the logic PCBA).
2 Replace the small spacer on the crossbar pin at the top of the printer (refer to Figure 4-11 on
page 4-11).
3 Insert the crossbar pin without the spacer into its mating hole in the subframe assembly.
4 Lower the opposite crossbar pin down to the chassis so that it aligns with the insertion channel
above the mating pin hole in the chassis.
5 Press down on the crossbar, ensuring that the pin tracks in the channel, spreading the chassis
slightly and snapping into the mating hole.
6 Replace the printhead load spring (held in place by the cover assembly).
Module Cover
To install the stainless steel module cover:
1 Lay the module on a flat surface with the metal bottom down.
2 On the module cover being installed, align the small cutout on one side with the mating portion
on the chassis (on bottom of printer module, below handle).
3 Ensure that the printhead load spring is in place and remains in place during the cover
assembly.
4-15
System Printer Service Manual
Note:
Do not allow the module to tilt during installation or the cover to come back up without
ensuring that the printhead load spring remains in place. The cover must be tightened in place
before this spring is secure.

Overview
When the printer module is powered ON or it resets itself, a power ON self-test (POST) is initiated.
During this test, the printer tests the processor and the analog-to-digital converter. If these tests
are successful, it then measures the printhead resistance and checks the motor for proper
operation. POST takes approximately 1.5 seconds to complete.
Bit Description
1 = processor error
8
0 = SDLC error
If its a processor error (bit 8 = 1), it then identifies where the error
occurred
