Unpacking and Inspection

Before unpacking the system printer module, inspect its shipping container for visible damage.
Unpack and remove the unit from the container, and verify that the following items are included:
90469 dual-channel system printer
2-channel paper tray with paper
4-channel paper tray with paper (if ordered)
Inspect these items for signs of damage. If damage is detected, notify the carrier and Spacelabs
Medical immediately.

Loading Paper
The system printer module operates with two paper trays, one for 2-channel recordings and
another for 4-channel recordings. When the printer is out of paper, it alerts you by sounding one
high-pitched beep approximately every eight seconds and by flashing the PAPER OUT LED.
To replace paper in a system printer module:
1 Press the tray eject button located above the PAPER OUT LED.
2 Remove the paper tray.

Warning
If you remove the printer module from the bedside monitor to load paper, instead of
removing only the paper tray, an immediate loss of any pending print jobs occurs.
3 Discard the old cardboard retainer inside the tray (2-channel only).
4 Remove the label from the new paper, keeping the cardboard retainer in place around one end
(2-channel only).
5 Lay the paper tray down on a flat surface with the paper roller to your left. Position the cue
marks on the paper as illustrated in Figure 2-1 on page 2-2 (the red line seen on one side of the
paper stack denotes the end placed at the bottom of the paper tray).

Note:
Cue mark orientation differs for 2- and 4-channel paper. The 2-channel cue marks must
appear face up at the bottom of the paper; 4-channel cue marks must appear face up at the
top of the paper. (Refer to Figure 2-1.)
6 Flip over the top sheet of paper so that it no longer lays on the paper stack.

2-1
System Printer Service Manual

7 Insert the paper stack all the way into the paper compartment (keep the top sheet out).
8 Flip the top sheet over onto the top of the tray and verify that the cue mark appears on the
correct side (top for 4-channel; bottom for 2-channel) and is face up.
9 Pull the paper over the paper roller as shown in Figure 2-1.

Note:
If the paper does not extend past the paper roller, the printer cannot feed paper past its
printhead.
10 Insert the paper tray into the module until it is flush with the module front panel. After reloading
the paper, the paper feed mechanism ejects one sheet to verify proper paper feeding. If the
paper tray size has been changed or the unit has just been plugged in, the printers software
version will be printed.

Caution
When the printer is out of paper or is placed OFF-line (UNIT OFF key), it will ignore any
new printer requests or alarm conditions.

Performance Test

Maintenance
The performance test is a series of internal tests that provide a functional check of the printer
module. These tests can be used as an initial assessment of printer performance or to complete a
final functional check following unit repair.
The performance test first checks the internal hardware and prints out any failures noted. Internal
tests include a thermal array loop back test, motor current test, and a memory test. This test
prompts you to initiate key sequences to verify the front panel membrane switches and LED
operation. Both paper trays are tested to ensure proper functioning of the cue mark sensor, door
open switch, tray size switch, and print quality. By analyzing test strips printed during the
performance test, printer performance can be verified.
To initiate the printer module performance test:
1 Remove the module from the monitor and install a 4-channel paper tray.
2 Plug one end of an SDLC test cable assembly (P/N 175-0865-00) into the SDLC connector at
the back of the printer module and the other end into its corresponding SDLC connector inside
the module slot of the monitor.

Note:
This cable is a short SDLC extender cable with the SDLC clock wires disabled. When the print
module detects no SDLC clock, it goes into a test-ready mode.
3 Hold in the UNIT OFF switch while the module goes through its POST sequence (approximately
five seconds).
4 When the printer emits a continual beep, release the UNIT OFF switch. The beep stops, the
green front panel LED flashes, and the printer generates the following printout:

MEMBRANE SWITCH AND LED TEST

Please press switches in this order.
Switch LED
STOP UNITOFF
SLOW PAPEROUT
CONTINUE BOTH ON
UNIT OFF BOTH OFF
5 Press STOP. The unit should beep and the UNIT OFF LED should turn ON.
6 Press SLOW. The unit should beep and the PAPER OUT LED should turn ON.
7 Press CONTlNUE. The unit should beep and both LEDs should turn ON.
8 Press UNIT OFF. The unit should beep and both LEDs should turn OFF.

Note:
If an error is detected during the previous portion of the test, an error code is indicated on the
UNIT OFF and PAPER OUT LEDs. To interpret these codes, refer to Self-Test Error Codes on
page 5-1.
9 After pushing the last button, the printer should start printing test data. Verify that the text and
graphic prints legibly and that the grids on the sheets containing charts and symbols print
evenly.
10 When finished printing, you are prompted to replace the 4-channel tray with the 2-channel tray.

4-3
System Printer Service Manual

11 When replaced, verify that the printer starts printing as soon as the tray is inserted. Again
inspect the print quality as was done in step 9.
12 When printing is completed, the test information is ready for evaluation.

Note:
The gray pattern test detects missing dots on the printhead or gross imperfections. It should
not be used as a judgment tool for print density (thermal paper is not uniform in gray-scale
printing). Use the analog tests as a demonstration of the printers capabilities.

11 The strip shown in Figure 4-7 plots current and voltage for the 12-volt supply that supplies
power to the printhead. As more data points are plotted, the current increases. The 90469
automatically limits the current draw to 3 amps. Verify that the end of the trace for printhead
current limit is within three minor divisions (3 mm) of the solid line (ignore the last blip).

Note:
The 119-0251-xx external power supply self-regulates the current draw. If the 90469 module is
installed in any product using this power supply, it will never reach the
3-amp trip level, and this portion of the test can be ignored.

Test Print for 2-Channel Paper

1 Verify that the gray pattern (sheet 4) is uniform from side to side with black lines along the edges
(there must be a margin between the line and the edge) and no white lines (missing dots).
2 Verify that the paper perforation stays between the two arrows.
3 Verify that the peak of the signal waveform remains higher than the top solid line.
4 Verify that the baseline of the waveform is lower than the bottom solid line (excluding the area
within one major division on either side of the gray cue mark).

Printhead Alignment
The printhead requires realignment if it has been disassembled or if the print copy shows signs of
being non-uniform.
To test the printhead's alignment:
1 Remove the module from the monitor and install the 4-channel paper tray.
2 Plug one end of the SDLC test cable assembly (P/N 175-0865-00) into the SDLC connector at
the back of the printer module and the other end into its corresponding SDLC connector inside
the module slot of the monitor/module housing.
3 Press and hold the SLOW button while the module goes through its POST sequence

Overview
When the printer module is powered ON or it resets itself, a power ON self-test (POST) is initiated.
During this test, the printer tests the processor and the analog-to-digital converter. If these tests
are successful, it then measures the printhead resistance and checks the motor for proper
operation. POST takes approximately 1.5 seconds to complete.

Self-Test Error Codes

Errors that occur during POST are presented in a nine-bit code using the printer module's PAPER
OUT and UNIT OFF LEDs. When ON, the PAPER OUT LED indicates a logic 0 and the UNIT OFF
LED indicates a logic 1.
The printer begins and ends the nine-bit error sequence by flashing both LEDs simultaneously.
After the initial flash, the error code follows.
The first bit (bit 8) indicates the origin of the error (SDLC or processor) (refer to SDLC Errors
on page 5-2 for a list of SDLC errors).
If the error is a processor error, the next bit (bit 7) indicates if the error is a POST error or a
running error (refer to POST Errors on page 5-4 and Processor Running Errors on page 5-4).
