There are three levels of analysis that would be discussed further here include

graphological, syntactic, and semantic level. Most of the analysis methods used
are by comparing the data with one or more other variations in purpose to find out
its objective of stylistic choices.

• Graphological Level

In this level of analysis, the text is divided into several parts in order to make
more specific graphological analysis of the text. Some variations of font size,
form, thickness, and style are:

1.

The first line of the text is stating EF English First – the name of the
institution which helds the English competition advertised. It is written in
italic, bold, using identical font with its original symbol, but rather
different in its style of not having a like-circle-line pattern in its letters.
There are ... point can be analysed in this part of text :

a. The letters EF subsequently followed by the words

English First without any punctuation mark and given capital letter
in the beginning of each words in order to make the reader would
directly identify EF as the abbreviation of English First. Therefore
they will easily recognize what EF stands for in another time they
meet this kind of symbol.

b. As this group of words – categorized as the first part

– has a very close relationship with the next part – the tittle of the
event –, it is written not in original logogram but written in a rather
simple choice. It wouldn’t split the reader’s main attention as it is
directed to the tittle of the event first but it still manage to keep some
characters of EF that the readers feel familiar with.

c. EF English First is written bigger than the

followed words – proudly presesnts – as it serves theme function of the
clause in addition to introduce the institution. Therefore “proudly
presesnts” written smaller as the rheme of the clause, giving predicator
to the subject preceeding.

Compare this first part with :

− .... If the first part written in this

way, that would be monotonous style of text, as the second part takes
this symbol in a bigger size. The reader’s attention won’t be firstly
focussed to the name of the events as its main purpose if this kind of
font is choosed for the introductory line.

− EF ... This second comparison provides

different font choice in matter of type and declivity which makes the
first part become a very common style of text, has no uniqueness as it
should does to represent the EF characteristic. It will less represent the
characteristic of EF logo, as a consequence the reader will not easily
catch the correlation of the first and following EF logo.

2.

Compare to the others, this group of words has the biggest font size which
makes the reader easily catch the topic. It is presented in two lines of
words written in brighter color as synchronized with the EF logo. This
special design created in purpose to direct the reader’s attention firstly to
the title of the event.

The clause PreserveOurHeritage serves as the theme of the event written

exactly bellow the word Olympic in purpose to create a unity with the
title preceding. There is no space between its words instead of initial
capital letter in each word and bold printed of word Heritage. This clause
likely represents teenager’s style as it is a common way among them to
write something without giving it any space between the words. The bold
printed word is given more emphasizing as it is the key word of the
event’s theme.

3.

This part is stating when and where the event will take place and placed
below the tittle of the event. The writer has framed it in order to give it a
special attribute that makes the readers easily capture the information. The
frame can give emphasizing effect to the text inside it as there is only few
porsition of line used in the text. Another point is the use of @ symbol to
pointing the place which shows identical style of teenager.

Compare with another choice below :

The first by making the words in italic style and omitting the frame. As
relating with the style of the word groups preceeding, it may create a
similiar but monotonous environment which can make it to be less
emphasized than it supposed to be.

4. Participate in the most prestigious English competition in

2009!

It is the only sentence founded in the text, stretched from the left edge to
the right exactly above the total amount of the prize in purpose of inviting
the reader to take part in the competition. Here the writer tries to make
another creation which is still to attrack the reader’s attention but in rather
small portion as its function is to make clear the purpose of the
advertisemebt of inviting people to jaoin the event.
T O 5.T A L P R I Z E o f R p 1 5 M i l l i o
o n l y f o r H i g h S c h o o l s t u d e n t s

There are some variations in this part of text which are :

 TOTAL PRIZE written in capital

letter in purpose of emphasizing the amount of the prize that may
consist of various kind of gift including money and others kind that it
is possibly consist of.

 of Rp 15 Million! It tries to stress

the number of the total account which reaches number of 15 in million,
that is why it is written in combination of number and letter instead of
just using one of them.

 only for High School students It serves as

notification for the reader about the participant prerequirement.
Written in small size in purpose to keep the advertisement able to
attract more people attention, so that the readers are not only the
teenager but also the younger and so the elder then they can distribute
the information.

F u r t h 6.
e r I n :f o r m a t i o n
E F K a y u n - ( E0 F3 1 J ) e 5m 3 u 4 r s0 a 0 r 7 i 1- ( 0 3 1 ) 8 4 9 9 9 0 0
E F P l a z a - ( E0 F3 1 S) i 5d - 4o 8a r 4j o 0 0 0 ( 0 3 1 ) 8 0 5 2 5 7 8
E F B u k it M a s - ( E0 3F 1 M) 5a 6l a 7 n g7 6 0 0- ( 0 3 4 1 ) 3 2 9 0 0 0
E F K l a m p i s - ( 0 3 1 ) 5 9 9 8 8 0 0

Comparing to the others, these group of information written in the smallest

font size as it consists of some phone numbers of EF branch in several big
cities in East Java Province. It doesn’t need to be written in a big font size
as it is kind of specific information addressed for them who interested or
willing to join the event. It is devided into two coloumns instead of written
serially in a row to synchronize with the EF logo be side it.

7. www.englishfirst.com
This website address written in a really small font size as the sixth part
written and placed in the bottom corner of the advertisement in line with
the sponsorship icons rather separated from the list of EF phone numbers.
This part serves as secondary source of information compare to the phone
number stated before. The readers are expected to call the phone number
as the prime source of information that could give them more direct and
clear information about the event rather than visiting the website which is
more general.

8. The sponsorship icons

There are two others company except EF as the host company which logo
is printed in the bottom corner of the advertisement. They are The Jakarta
Post and Club printed in its original company logograms. Its main purpose
is to promote these two labels although in a minor way. The company
logograms printed in its original icon in order to make the people easily
memorize and recognise it another time.

Compare with : The Jakarta Post Club

Eventhough the company logo is written in bold, it makes the icon to be

less marked than if it is written in its original logogram. Therefore original
printed is more profitable. The importance is that although they are placed
not in main space, people can easily notice them as the supporter of the
event.

In the graphological level of analysis, there is a similiarity among the parts

have been analyzed above that is although it uses many variation in matter of
font size and style, it keep use the same font type with the EF logo as to
maintain its characteristic.

• Syntactic Level
There are less items of syntactic analysis as the text mostly consists of phrases
instead of clauses.

1.

In this clause construction – EF English First proudly presents- the

writer placed EF English First in the initial position as it is the theme
of the clause. It emphasizes EF as the creator of the event. This clause –
thme and rheme construction – also has close relationship with the
following clause that serves as the tittle of the event. The name of the
event is written not in the beginning of the text, but after the introduction
of EF and in the biggest choice of font size among the other words in the
text. This arrangement makes clear the analysis that EF English First is
the theme of the clause eventhough it is not written in a very big font size.

Compare with :

Proudly, EF English First presents – The theme used in this clause

is unmarked theme which is represented by the word proudly in the initial
position of the text. Therefore, the main topic of the clause is not the
subject as the original clause presented and it makes EF has less important
role in the introductory line.

2. Participate in the most prestigious English competition in

2009!

It is the only one sentence construction found in the text and is written in
imperative type as inviting the readers to participate in the competition.
This invitational sentence uses predicator participate as the theme of the
clause and no subject preceeding. The object of invitation is not stated
clearly in this sentence, so that everyone who reads this advertisement will
feel being invited to take part. As they read further, they will find out the
explicit objects of the invitation are high school students. This kind of
invitation has a purpose to attrack general reader’s attention first which
then focuss it into spesific requirements of participant.

• Semantic Level

There are several word choices in the text that can be analyzed through
semantic level of analysis which belong to noun, verb, adjective, and several
other word classes. Considering its semantic features, several words are
chosen instead of several others which have similar environment of meaning.

1. Olympic

It has a feature of spectacular competition, gives additional greater value

to the event than any other words such as competition, contest (usually
used for certain types of competition), festival. As this word used in the
name of the event to propose a great or spectacular feeling to the reader.

2. preserve

The word preserve is more preferable than the other words like save (take
away or prevent from something dangerous), or keep (simpler act of taking
care of something but without any maintenance), as there is a sense of
maintenance in its semantic feature.

3. heritage

Compare with other similiar words such as culture, history, tradition, the
word heritage has broader scope of features includes those three words. It
covers almost every aspect of what generation has and be queth to the next
generation.

4. participate

The word participate reflects a more active contribution from the

participant who takes part in the event compare with the word join which
require the participant to regostrate and alows them to be less active or
even passive.

5. prestigious (... the most prestigious ...)

Instead of using greatest or biggest, the writer prefers to choose

prestigious as the adjective to increase the level of prestige the event has
that make the reader aware, respect, and more enthusiatic.

6. competition

Competition written in the invitation sentence has minor sense compare

with the word Olympic preceeding, as it tries to make the reader get
familiar with the event.

7. prize

The writer chooses the word prize rather than money, gift, or reward, as
the winner may get not only money but also other various things as the
present.

8. only

The word only is choosen rather than just as it has softer tone and serves
more polite than the compared word.

9. our

The writer placed the word our instead of Indonesia in the theme of the
events, which is the used of the pronoun requires the involvement both the
writer and the reader of the text. Its purpose is to encourage the reader
regarding the theme that the event brings.
From the analysis above, it can be concluded that the analysis of the text is mostly
in the graphological field. There is le - 9 -ss syntactic variation can be analyzed as
the text mainly consists of phrases rather than clauses. Another factor which has a
really important influence of text style is the target market whom mostly
teenagers. They like simplicity, rather informal, and familiar style with youth
world.
