Online Projects, Collaboration Sites and Publishing Opportunities

Lesson Idea Name: Create an Original Story

Content Area: English Language Arts
Grade Level(s): Second Grade
Content Standard Addressed:
 ELAGSE2W6: With guidance and support from adults, use a variety of tools to produce and publish
writing, including digital tools and collaboration with peers.

Technology Standard Addressed:

 Standard 3- Knowledge Constructor

Selected Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity:

 KidPub (Online Publishing Opportunity)

URL(s) to support the lesson:

Describe how you would incorporate an Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity in your
classroom:
 I can incorporate an Online Publishing Opportunity for students to partake in. The students will work
independently to write an original story or poem. Students will go beyond just writing a story on paper
because the students will use an Online Publishing site, KidPub, to post their original writing pieces. The
students will be encouraged to read other stories from other students from around the world. This lesson
activity is designed to provide the students with authentic learning opportunities as they work with
technology to post their work online.

What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a classroom?
 To complete this learning activity, students would need access to a computer or tablet. Students can
create and write their stories on paper before typing them onto the publishing area of KidPub. Students
should review their work carefully before publishing online.

Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them may not be
addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level).
a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often beyond their
school: Students will collaborate with peers, mentors, and others outside of their school once they
publish their work to the publishing site. Readers of the students’ original work can leave comments
for the students to read.

b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (creating original data and or producing original
products as a result of engaging in a project): Students are utilizing technology to display personal
knowledge through writing products. The original writing pieces created by the students will be
displayed on the publishing website.

c. Higher-order thinking: Students will use higher-order thinking skills while thinking creatively when
working on their writing pieces. Students should rely on personal creativity to help them complete
their original products.

d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their product: The KidPub
website is viewed by individuals from around the world, so students from around the world can read
writing pieces that are information and relevant to what they are learning.

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):
☐ Remembering ☐ Understanding ☒ Applying ☒ Analyzing ☒ Evaluating ☒ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration (LoTi Level):

☐ Level 1: Awareness ☐ Level 2: Exploration ☐ Level 3: Infusion ☐ Level 4: Integration
☒ Level 5: Expansion ☐ Level 6: Refinement

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

 This lesson allows students to choose their own story or poem to publish, and proving flexibility boosts
student motivation.
 Students can use the computers or tablets to help with learning how to create stories or poems. Students
can receive help with spelling or use graphing organizers online to formulate thoughts to use in their
writing.

Lesson idea implementation and Internet Safety Policies:

 Student safety and internet safety should be all teacher’s main priority when assigning projects to
students. It is important for teachers to research the amount of personal information that is required for
students to create accounts for a particular website. Thankfully, KidPub is a safe website that does not
require student names to be displayed when publishing writing pieces.

Reflective Practice:
 This learning activity and lesson is designed to have students use their creativity to create original writing
pieces and publish them to an Online Publishing website. I believe that students will gain new writing
skills by being creative while writing original stories or poems.
