Lesson Idea Name: Animals, Animals, Animals!

Content Area: Life Science
Grade Level(s): 2nd Grade
Content Standard Addressed:
S2L1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the life cycles of different
living organisms.
a. Ask questions to determine the sequence of the life cycle of common animals in your area: a
mammal such as a cat, dog or classroom pet, a bird such as a chicken, an amphibian such as a
frog, and an insect such as a butterfly.

Technology Standard Addressed:

6a. Students choose the appropriate platforms and tools for meeting the desired objectives of their creation
or communication.

Selected Technology Tool: PowerPoint

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): For this lesson, students will be able to choose any platform that best
suits them to model the life cycle of an animal of their choosing. Allowing the students to choose their desired
platform will give them the opportunity to work with the one that fits their unique needs.

The Animals, Animals, Animals! PowerPoint will be used as a hook in the lesson. The PowerPoint has text,
pictures, and narrated sound. This will allow visually impaired learners to hear the words on the PowerPoint,
but it will also allow hearing impaired learners to see the words/pictures on the PowerPoint. Everyone in the
class will be able to obtain the information in the PowerPoint, regardless of any disabilities.

Lesson idea implementation: The Animals, Animals, Animals! PowerPoint will be used as the opening/hook
for the lesson. Teacher will show students the PowerPoint to introduce the topic of animals to the students.
As a class, we will discuss life cycles and we will learn about the life cycle of a butterfly. To model the
upcoming at-home project, we will create a digital-poster of the life cycle of a butterfly, as a class. Then
students will be able to choose an animal from a list of pre-selected animals to create a poster of the life cycle
of their chosen animal. I want students to use some technology for this project, so I will have them write their
words, and lay out the cycle on a poster board, then use the internet to find pictures of the different stages in
the life cycle of their chosen organism. As we continue to learn about living organisms, the student’s posters
will be great visual aids to have in the classroom to take a closer look at each organism chosen.

Reflective Practice: I feel that this lesson/project would be very beneficial for student’s learning. Not only will
the students get an up-close look at the life cycle of the animal they chose, but when everyone else brings
their poster to class, we will be able to look at everyone’s animal and extend our learning. To further extend
this lesson/learning, I could take the time to create a digital life cycle and the students could help me put the
correct pictures where they go. For example, if I am doing the life cycle of a bird, the first image would be an
egg, the next would be a baby bird, then almost-grown birds, and finally adult birds flying. I could display a
blank life cycle on the board and have students tell me where each picture goes in the cycle. This would show
me if they are learning the correct stages of each animal’s life cycle.
