There can be little doubt that confusion over the identity of drugs that
physicians prescribe may do serious harm to their patients. The problem is
closely related to that of drug nomenclature, a subject that was recently
discussed authoritatively by Dr. Lloyd C. Miller, director of revision, United
States Pharmacopoeia.1 He noted the difficulty confronting the perplexed
student of medicine or practicing physician who must learn the name, identity,
action and uses of a host of drugs that are constantly increasing in number and
