Introduction

Kemira Oyj is a chemical industry group that consists of three main segments. Kemira is
headquartered in Helsinki, Finland.
Kemira has three segments Pulp & Paper, Municipal & Industrial and Oil & Mining focusing on water-
intensive industries. Kemira aims to improve its customers’ water, energy and raw material
efficiency.
Kemira became the world's biggest provider of the pulp and paper chemicals after its acquisition of
the pulp and paper chemical operations of Lanxess. In 2009 Kemira’s Paper segment’s market area
is global and it is second in pulp and paper chemicals worldwide. Paper segment is further divided
into four customer segments: Pulp, Printing & Writing, Packaging & Board and Tissue &
Specialties. Municipal & Industrial segment is divided into Municipal Water and Industrial Water
customer segments. Also Municipal & Industrial segment’s market is global and it is #2 in coagulants
and #5 in flocculants worldwide. Oil & Mining segment was launched in June 2008 to develop
businesses in the oil, gas and mining industries. It is divided into Oil & Gas, Minerals & Metals and
Formulation Technology customer segments. Oil & Mining segment has a global market area, in
which it is #1 in coagulants and #3 in flocculants worldwide.
Kemira’s customers:
 Pulp & paper industries
 Municipal water treatment
 Industrial water treatment
 Oil & gas industries
 Mining industry
 Pharmaceutical industry
 Detergent & cleaning industries
 Feed industry
 Food industry
 Other selected industries
Kemira was originally a state chemical company, producing fertilizer. However, the corporation
expanded, and the fertilizer division was separated into Kemira GrowHow, which was later acquired
by and consolidated into Yara International. In 1972, Kemira bought the paint manufacturer Tikkurila,
but divested of it in 2010 by distributing the shares as dividend to its shareholders.
Water
We’re putting more demands on our water resources all the time. The more we produce,
manufacture, consume, and throw away, the more water we use. How can we replenish the
water cycle and keep up with our growing needs?
To help water treatment plant operators do this while optimizing the Total Cost of Ownership,
we work in close cooperation with customers to reduce expenses for energy, labor and
chemicals, while safely achieving the targeted water quality.
Our deep R&D and application know-how, secure supply network and complete technology
portfolio are some of the reasons why we are the preferred partner for safe, efficient and
sustainable chemical water treatment.
Raw water & drinking water
Less than 3% of all water on earth is freshwater and, because most of that is locked in ice caps
or deep underground, only 1% is available to us. Since life is impossible without H2O, which
makes up around 60% of our bodies, taking care of the world’s freshwater is of the utmost
importance.
Large variability in surface water quality means raw water is very rarely good enough to be used
for drinking or industrial processes without treatment. We help both municipalities and water-
intensive industries meet their required quality standards with our application expertise
throughout the water cycle.
Drinking water
Drinking water producers are faced with ever-deteriorating quality of raw water, as well as
ever-tightening regulations for safe and clean potable water. Raw water contains varying
proportions of organic decomposition products, sand/clay particles, algae, bacteria and viruses
and pH may fluctuate as well. Coagulation and flocculation are the most effective treatment
methods. The coagulants, polymers and antiscalants in our portfolio are FDA compliant and NSF
certified.
Desalination and water reuse
In areas where natural groundwater or surface water cannot meet demand, seawater and
brackish water are desalted and processed into drinking water and process water. To make this
kind of water usable, the main salt components, sodium and chloride, must be removed by
using a special membrane technology called Reverse Osmosis (RO).
Membrane technology is also utilized in water reuse applications. This means treatment and
recycling of wastewater to be used in industrial processes, agriculture or in some cases for
municipal purposes. Not all water that is utilized needs to be drinking water quality.
Kemira offers a holistic, cost-effective membrane program for desalination plants and water
reuse applications. Based on our expert analysis, we offer an optimized solution for both the
pretreatment and the membrane processes, with a full range product offering coupled with
monitoring and optimizing technologies.
Color, taste and appearance
Nobody appreciates suspicious color, taste or appearance in their water. Removal of suspended
solids is one important issue when aiming to produce healthy and aesthetic water. We have
developed safe and certified coagulants and flocculants with high-performing properties for
removing suspended solids. With a little help from Kemira, you can reach exceptionally low
residual particle matter.
Color may be caused by dissolved organic matter, like humic and fulvic acids, or can also result
from mineral impurities such as iron and manganese. Chemical coagulation is an effective
method to achieve color removal and improve water quality.
For metal removal, our products are commonly used for precipitation of both particle-bound
and dissolved heavy metals. By combining coagulants and flocculants, the treatment is most
effective. We also offer chemistries for the reduction or oxidation of metal ions to make them
easier to separate – and for selected heavy metals, adsorbents can work as an alternative
treatment method.
Our long experience and comprehensive water treatment process know-how is available to
resolve your specific water quality problems.
Process water
Each process water system is different and requires products that are customized depending on
the water quality, branch of industry and process parameters. Water reuse is also a viable
option in industrial settings, especially in water-scarce areas. With the right treatment
technologies, water can be reused through several cycles, which helps to balance the gap
between water supply and demand. In all cases, getting the chemistry right is extremely
important for maximum efficiency, while minimizing damage to equipment and maintenance
shutdowns.
We help you optimize the total cost of process with lower energy and water consumption, and
keep your equipment running reliably with less maintenance required.

Antiscalants and dispersants
The broad Kemira antiscalant and dispersant range includes high performance polymers and tailor-made
formulations to combat a wide variety of scaling and fouling problems in municipal and industrial
operations.
Membrane and thermal desalination
The KemGuard® range includes high performance polymers, phosphonates and specialised blends to
tackle multiple scales found in thermal and membrane desalination systems, whereas the KemEguard®
range offers phosphorus-free biodegradable scale and deposit control solution for desalination systems.
KemGuard desalination antiscalants comply with many international and local regulatory requirements
for potable water treatment and are compatible with membranes and other system components in a
specified application range.
Municipal waste water treatment
Formation of mineral scales is a common problem in sewage and waste water treatment facilities,
especially in anaerobic digesters, dewatering trains and areas of turbulence. KemGuard® offers
proprietary sulphonated copolymer chemistry and specialised formulations for control of struvite,
vivianite, calcite, hydroxylapatite and other common scales in sewage and waste water treatment
plants.
These products have proven performance and wide acceptance in industry for municipal and waste
water treatment scale control, thereby ensuring stable and economic system operation.
Industrial Cooling & Heating application
KemGuard® product line includes a comprehensive portfolio of low molecular weight homopolymers,
copolymers and terpolymers, covering a wide range of molecular weight, pH, chemistry and
functionality, that are effectively used in cooling tower and boiler water treatment formulations. Kemira
antiscalant technology also includes specialised formulations based on multicomponent blends to
combat scaling, corrosion and fouling problems. The result is improved economy, better energy and
water efficiency, longer equipment life and stable system operation.
Many of these products conform to FDA regulation 21 CFR 173.310 for boiler water treatment. The
