Compressed Gas Safety Training Handout

Hazards include
 Fire & Explosion Smart Safety Rules
 Poisoning
 Asphyxiation Inspect cylinders, regulators &
hoses before each use
 Over exposure
 Impact from falling cylinders Never use a tool to operate
 Frostbite or gas injection under skin cylinder valves – hand operation
 Missile hazard from broken cylinder heads only

Engineering Controls Check cylinder & gas identification

Gas cylinder storage areas Use a cart or other secure means
Flow Restrictors for moving - never carry or roll gas
Leak Monitors cylinders
Fume hoods
Grease or oils in areas where
Ventilation systems
compressed oxygen is used can
Sprinkler systems cause fire or explosion

Administrative Controls Use regulators for all gas cylinder

Inspections hookups
Employee training
Use non-sparking tools for
Segregation of gas containers flammable gases
Inspections and audits
Signs & Labels Secure cylinders at work areas
Personal Protective Equipment use
Limit pressure to 30 psi or less for
Identification of authorized employees
air blowdown
Procedures for receipt, use and storage
Never refill or attempt to repair a
Storage gas cylinder
Empty & full bottles labeled & separated
Caps installed Move leaking cylinders out of
Store upright & away from heat sources buildings – then vent all remaining
gas. Mark damaged cylinders
Dry & well ventilated area “Damaged. Do not Use”
Oxygen cylinders stored separately
Chained or strapped to prevent tipping For compressed air systems –
No smoking around storage or use areas check all hose fittings – use a
control nozzle with self closing
Fuel gas and oxygen stored a minimum of 20 feet apart
valve at operators end.
or separated by a 1-hour fire wall
Wear safety glasses
