The exhibition “Icons of the Humankind” included all elements any professional visual
arts exhibition gathers – a gallery, lighting, invitations, publicity, a cocktail party, and a
guestbook – however, there was no artwork.
(Márcia X, text written by the artist, 2002)
The second epigraph, taken from a statement made by Márcia X1 in the beginning of the 21st century, talks about
one of the several performance acts included in the first phase of her work in the 80s. The exhibition was, in her
own words, marked by provocation (“the intention was to question, using humor, the role of the artist and art in
society”). One can interpret “Icons of the Humankind” in at least three different ways. The simpler way is the one
that best adapts to the experience of those who were there or read the description of what happened: it was a
vernissage with no “artwork”. As with any other opening of exhibition, the attendees entered the gallery; signed
the guestbook; had something to eat or drink; and their presence was recorded on camera; however, there was
“nothing to see” (at least not on the walls), except for themselves: the public. The second way would be to state
the absence of the artwork. However, that would be a lie, because on the following day the pictures and the
video “became” the exhibition. A third interpretation, more intense, emerges with time, along with memory, and
how this experiment increasingly gains meaning as the context of art, itself, changes. In this case, it becomes
clear that the “artwork” is everything in the gallery, not only what you can “see”. It is the time it takes to prepare
it; in addition to the invitations, the event, the waiter, the guestbook, the pictures, the video, and the presence
of the public. It is, to some extent, the inheritance of conceptualism in an act of performance art, that is, the
performance itself as the “exhibition” by Márcia, with the participation of Alex Hamburger filming the video and
Aimberê César and Maurício Ruiz taking the pictures. The performance also includes the public, the gallery,
the objects, and the people. A situation that challenges itself. The waiter performs. The double image of the
artist on the invitation postcard performs: she is wearing a bikini, and has a “necklace” made of the support
of a gas cylinder. That is, pure nonsense. Would that be an invitation to a party or to a “Night in Acapulco”?
The conceptualism from the previous decade is also present in the interversion (interventions in the public
space) “X-Gallery” (“X-Galeria”) by 3NÓS3. From one X to another, the group questions the “white box” either
1 At first, Márcia used her second name, Pinheiro. However, a fashion designer who carried the same name
went to the press to claim she had nothing to do with the performance acts by Márcia, the artist. To avoid
future problems, Márcia created the second name X (probably based on Generation X).

AIMBERÊ CESAR
* This is Márcia X, and me, in the middle, Maurício Ruiz. The one
standing is Aimberê Cesar. As you can see, he was not ordinary at all.
Questioning taboos was his signature. Our beloved Aimberê made
his way as an audacious artvist across the 80s in Rio de Janeiro.
He invented the Zen Nudism, made spontaneous unannounced
interventions and surprised everyone by performing the Nude Camera.

Details of the artist’s body are clearly outlined, while the body as
a whole is out of focus. This videoperformance comments on the
visible and the invisible, the matters of scale and, above all, on what
can or cannot be seen, and what our eyes remain deprived of.
VELADO
Ficar pelado é a parte
“Let’s say that the zen nudism didn’t arise in 1990, it was crystallized
in 1990. I’ve always been like that. I was raised according to Piaget
and Lacan, on the principles of freedom, showering naked with my
parents, it was natural to me. I never understood, and I still don’t
understand, why people have problems with nudity - for me, it’s
the natural state of human beings (...) The zen nudism has only
strengthened it. Being naked is the easy part, discussing it further
is perceiving the hypocrisy in our society, realizing that we’re what
we’re and not what society wants us to be. Clothes and clothing
requirements are the hypocrisy that clothes our bodies and laws.
Performance with Xico Chaves (with the bow and arrow). The artist was
questioned by the police, but not knowing if that cameraman was working
for a foreign television network, or even Rede Globo, the policeman
asked him to stop it, but his interference was limited to his presence.

Sentado no sofá, repentinamente,
At the time, we shared a studio in Catete neighborhood. On Sundays, we used to have lunch at Márcia’s mother,
near Flamengo neighborhood. The Sunday before the “magic concert”, we headed for the customary lunch and waited
for the moment of the repast. Sitting on the couch, suddenly, as in an epiphany, I saw, at the apartment’s living room,
two small tricycles that belonged to X’s nephews. I immediately associated them with the toy piano on Cage’s piece,
entitled “Toy Piano”. I commented to my partner that maybe we could use the children’s velocipedes to pursue our
almost “utopian” goal.

* I came into the world in 1952 and, years after that, my fans nicknamed me the Gear
Gearloose of performance art in SP. Nice to meet you, Otávio Donasci. All this because,
in the 80s, I turned a TV into a person. And it was not magic, it was a hell of a good fix! I’m
here explaining to the reporter that this experience involved a concept (a cyborg, a hybrid
of human and machine), electronics, disassembly, electrical tape, cable and a CRT screen.

In “Victory over the Sun”, the costumes still carry the gloomy
atmosphere of the 80s. A re-creation of a play by futuristic Russians
Kazimir Malevich and Aleksei Kruchenykh, staged for the first time
in 1913, “Victory’s” text was written in Zaum or “beyond the mind”,
a kind of sound poetry in which Russians were pioneer. Some of
these costumes were reused in the performance “Futuristic Machine”,
years later, in 1997. The spirit of the 80s still lives in the expressionist
gestures and the commentaries on the remote avant-garde time.

GRUPO BrP
A partir
Formed by artists, curators and researchers Lucio Agra, Joanna Barros, Samira Br and
Grasiele Sousa with the purpose of giving continuity to the history and work of the former
Brasil Performance Association (Associação Brasil Performance, 2010-2016) of which
they were members. Following the trajectory started with the Association, the current BrP
group maintained its interest in dialoguing with both national and international cultural and
artistic representatives, proceeding with the annual editions (seven in total) of Perfor, the
International Festival and Forum on Performance Art, in partnership with important cultural
centers and institutions in the city of São Paulo and, most recently, in other Brazilian cities.
Perfor5 outlined the main national and Latin American performance festivals. The group
aims at proposing artistic situations that bring the specialized debate to the general public,
arousing interest in the performance legacy in our country, an objective that is also pursued
by the group’s special projects, such as the [retroperformance] exhibition.
The [retroperformance] was originally conceived for the city of São Paulo. The opportunity
to extend it to Rio de Janeiro has brought new conceptual aspects to the surface, especially
regarding the connections between the procedures adopted by the artists in both cities. The
exhibition seeks to give a picture of this relationship network.
