Overview
Wastewater stabilization ponds have been upgraded by the use of chemical
precipitation and by improving the hydraulic detention time with float walls
(fellingsdam). Most important target was the separation of phosphorus. Sweden
is the global leader in construction and research
on the fellingsdam concept. It is widely used as
an alternative to compact plants in sparsely
populated areas. International tests (Reinosdotter
& Sjöbohm, 2000) has shown that a shift from an
aerated pond to an efficient fellingsdam (Sao
Joao de Boa Vista, Brazil) has improved the
reduction of phosphorus dramatically and reduced
the operational cost by more than 50%.

One of the most critical aspects to be investigated is the hydraulic detention time
after which the chemical dosage is to be considered sufficient to reach good
water quality. As a platform for this recommendation the turbidity values through
a hydraulically well-designed pond system are used. In India the detention time
in the Fellingsdam is estimated to be around 3 days. Slaked lime and aluminum
salts are the chemicals most frequently used.
Cost
Investment cost is to a large extent depending on local conditions (excavation,
lining needed etc.) and will have to be calculated separately. Under normal
conditions the price is between 20-30 percent of a regular sewage treatment
plant.
The theoretical background for the Fellingsdam concept has been accomplished
by Professor Jörgen Hanaeus, Luleå University of Technology
(jorgen.hanaeus@ltu.se or +46 (0) 920 491 492. Many municipalities in Sweden
are using the Fellingsdam and we would be happy to connect you to the
responsible persons.
Järven Ecotech
Järven Ecotech has constructed more than 100 out of around 300 ponds in
Sweden and possesses the experience and knowledge to bring this proven
technology to India. Järven Ecotech is based in India since January 2010 and will
provide our municipal or industrial customers with turn key projects. You are
welcome to contact our Sales manager in India, Mr Fredrik Agerhem, for further
inquires.
