How to Paint
ANYTHING
From prep work to final touches, these expert tips will
help you master your next home project. BY S A R A H J E A N S H E LT O N

THE FRONT

Start early in the day.
It’s easiest to paint a

so you’ll have a working

PROJECT #5
A CHAIR
Spend time sanding.
It’s the key to a no-peel
paint job! Stripping away
prior layers will give
new coats staying power.
Flip it over. Paint under
the seat and inside the legs
first, then finish with the
areas that are most visible.
Move around. Don’t
tackle spindles and curves
from one position. You’ll
avoid a gloppy mess if you
focus on one side at a time.
Clean the brush. As you
work, pause periodically to
remove excess paint, which
pools near the handle of
the brush and causes drips.

PROJECT #6
A BRICK FIREPLACE
Give it a good cleaning. It takes only a light draft to stir up
debris. Carefully suck up any dust and soot in and around
the hearth with the vacuum’s hose extension, then wash the
surface with a solution of mild dish soap and water.
Plan for two coats. Remember that brick is porous, so you’ll
need to apply at least a couple of coats to ensure complete
coverage. Look for a masonry formula specifically made for
stone and brick that can withstand high heat.
Grab the right roller. To get into those itty-bitty nooks and
crannies along the seams of the stones, use a mini roller with
a ½” nap. The thicker the nap, the more paint it is designed
to hold, which means you won’t have to constantly dip it back
into the tray to reload.

PAINTED FLOOR: LISA ROMEREIN/OTTO. DESK: JONNY VALIANT.

Make it last. Use leftover wall paint from your last DIY project, and you’re
going to get nicks and scratches. You need to use a formula designed
specifically for floors so it will stand up to everyday wear and tear.
Check the weather. Choose a day with low humidity so paint will dry fast.
Start smart. Approach the room as you do when you mop, but remember—
no tiptoeing allowed! Position yourself in the corner farthest from the exit
and work your way out of the room with an extended roller brush.
Be patient. Let paint dry (about four to six hours) between coats—two
should be enough—and let it cure completely before replacing furniture
or cleaning. (Scuffs and sprays may damage the finish if it hasn’t hardened
fully.) Curing can take a few days or a few weeks, so be sure to check with
the manufacturer for guidelines.

We all need iron for energy.

Women are especially prone to iron deficiency due to periods,
pregnancy, and breast-feeding. In fact, menstruation is the main
reason women are 10 times more likely than men to suffer from
low iron levels. Just a few consecutive heavy periods can cause
iron losses that are difficult to reverse without supplementation.

1
Make exercise a priority, even
if it seems like there’s no time
Working out is nature’s stress reliever—
it helps boost a chemical in the brain called
norepinephrine, which manages anxiety.
Find a pocket of time, even if it’s just 30 minutes
a day, to get moving. And instead of seeing exercise as
another task, try to think of it as a way to help you get your
work done faster, because it keeps you in a better mental
state for productivity.

2
Log more sleep each
night, no matter what
Banking just three to four hours of sleep a
night in order to cross off to-do’s may work
in the short term, but it can lead to burnout
and cause negative health effects long-term.
JENNIE’S STRESS STORY It’s crucial to figure out a way to get a full night of rest
(studies typically suggest at least seven hours). To do so,
“I need to find cut out distractions that pull you away from preparing for

1
Get your health in order
Well-being concerns can cause a lot of extra
stress. But if they’re related to hormonal changes,
visiting a menopause specialist—you can ask your
primary care physician for a referral—can help.
This will not only ensure that you get the care you
need but also provide some peace of mind. Finding the
right doctor may take time at first, but it’s worth the effort.

2
Rethink your evening routine
Quieting your mind before bed helps you
unwind from a hectic day. But the key is
to choose the right activity that won’t rile
you up. For example, Ruby enjoys adult
coloring books, but these can actually be too
stimulating to do while in bed. Listening to an audiobook,
on the other hand, gives you something to wrap your head

Identity theft is one of the fastest-growing
crimes in America, and it all starts with
your Social Security number landing
in the wrong hands. Those nine digits
allow thieves to open credit cards in your

THE FIX: Never carry your Social

in a safe place or shred them. When
someone requests your number, ask why
it’s needed, how it will be used, and what
will happen if you refuse. Use that info
