AFRICAN HISTORY
SERIES

1
THE SLAVE TRADE
Slavery has historically been widespread in Africa, and still
continues today in some countries. Systems of servitude and slavery
were common in part of Africa, as they were in much of the ancient
world. In many African societies where slavery was prevalent, the
enslaved people were not treated as chattel slaves and were given
certain rights in system similar to indentured servitude elsewhere
in the world. When the Arab slave trade and Atlantic slave trade
began, many of the local slave systems began supplying captives for
slave markets outside Africa.

Slavery in Africa history was practiced in many different forms:

Debt slavery, enslavement of war captives, military slavery,
and criminal slavery were practiced in various parts of Africa.
Plantation slavery also occurred primarily on the eastern coast of
Africa and in parts of West Africa. The importance of domestic
plantation slavery increased during the 19th century due to the
abolition of the Atlantic slave trade. Many African states dependent
on the international slave trade reoriented their economies towards
legitimate commerce worked by slave labor.

Slavery was part of the economic structure of African societies for

many societies for many centuries, although the extent varied. Ibn
Battuta, who visited the ancient kingdom of Mali in the mid-14th
century, recounts that the local inhabitants vied with each other in
the number of slaves and servant they had, and was himself given a
slave boy as a hospital gift.

Many communities had hierarchies between different types of

slaves: for example, differentiating between those who had been
born into slavery and those who had been captured through war

POEMS FACULTY
OUR CRY
When icy claws never melt and no light
Lies in a twenty four hour day,
It seems light has no power.

From the eye drops to the squeezing of face

To the blade cutting emotion frozen in the heart
Of the deceased relative and to the unforgettable
Memories that is left in the minds of living,
One could never hunt down the statement
DEATH IS WICKED!!

If generosity, kindness, tender age, good life

Couldn’t serve as elders of our life and apologize on
Our behalf for death to melt it icy claws then who can.

A world with much to lose but less to gain,

A world with lot of rot but less golden,
A world with much to give but less to maintain
And a world with a date to give the last breath.
Is it our curse or destiny?
One Greek philosopher of Athens(Socrate ) once said, the
hour of depar
ture has arrived and we go our ways; I to die, and you to live.
Which is better? Only God knows.

CALABASH
I laid in the hands of a royal,
In me be stored the trust to communicate with
the gods.
Asaase Yaa b3gye wonsa they say as
I spit on the ground for Asaase Yaa.
Who am I to have this authority over the gods?
In the sun am I dried to be strong enough to
shoulder the survival of men.
My serves to mankind is countless but on the
stool of nature would I not be looked at.
I dangle on chairs and tables of gold because I
have no buttocks to sit and no legs to walk.
I string music to the ears of the poor and the
rich, drizzling encouragement and happiness
on them.
A traveller I am and a traveller will I be till age
worn out.
My faith around the world is now dwelled in
culture. Mother age has taken the trust in me.
I will rest because centuries have I servedmy
purpose.

THE GIRL NAMED HANNAH
WRITTEN BY ELIZABETH OWUSU

Well, after school I don’t really have any plans

although some of my school mates are making
business, I don’t have any talent so I decided to
write. Well writing and acting has always been
my dream but I never got the chance to do
both so using this six months period I decided
to try my hands on writing, I hope readers
enjoy what I write.

The cry of a new born baby girl echoed in the

maternity unit of Annes catholic hospital as the
mother was very tired thinking she gave birth
to a baby boy but she gave birth to a girl, the
disappointment on her face when the midwife
told her about her birth. Mom mom, I miss
you, as her eldest son told her mom he was very
happy about having a little sister. Justin was
very happy about having a new sister.
5
He held her hands and started playing
with her little fingers. Baby Hannah slept so
soundly through that night. As Juliet, Hannah’s
mother started reminiscing about his fight
with Hannah’s father about her father telling
her to abort the baby that made her more
sad and sorrowful. It was time for her to be
sent home. Juliet in the car was still brooding
about her baby Hannah, as she decided to
name her when she was in the hospital. She
got to the house and her mother welcomed her
with a smile but nodded sadly. This made her
mother more worried. Juliet, your daughter is
so beautiful her brother laughed and shouted,
my sister is the most beautiful of all and I will
be her guardian angel. Juliet told Beatrice she
wanted a male but had a female. Beatrice said
Hannah is a nice name and encouraged her
to accept her in good faith for nobody knows
tomorrow. Hannah became very close with her
brother Justin. She grew into a beautiful young
lady.
6
Years later, pum pum as the sound of a country music
played in the room of Hannah as she was getting
ready for middle school as her brother Justin was
taken her. Hannah her mom called for her; hurry up
you are going to be late for your first day at school,
she responded, am coming down, Juliet will be ready
as I see Hannah comes from a history of renowned
catholic. So she attended liberty catholic middle
school. Her brother Justin drove her to school. She
alighted her at school. Hannah was reluctant to get
out of the car as she was very shy but everybody was
busy getting ready for class. Justin remarked; get out
of my car. Hannah got out of the car and walked
through the hall of the high school heading to the
headmaster to the principal’s office. She greeted the
principal, the principal welcomed her and asked
her to sign the necessary document. The principal
took her to her class tutor, he introduced her to the
class tutor and left. Hannah’s legs were shaken with
her palm sweating, her hands began to feel cold. Her
classmate asked if she was sick and Hannah nodded
no. The class tutor introduced Hannah to the class.
Pogue the biggest boy in class asked Hannah to tell
them something about herself………….

PHARMACY INN
TRAMADOL
T he drug claiming the glitter years of Ghanaian youth.
Tramadol renamed notoriously ‘’tramol’’ by the Ghanaian
society is a synthetic opioid analgesic officially indicated
for relieving moderate to severe pain. It works in the brain
where it exhibits its analgesic action. Unfortunately, its site of
action has been brutally exploited for the bad reasons-Drug
Abuse. The live saving pain reliever has now been degraded
to a forbidden commodity. Even being genuinely used for the
right reasons, the user is somewhat stigmatized.
The youth have strangely gotten to know the good drug
works in the powerful brain, and thus have found substitute
in it for drugs like cocaine that makes you feel ‘’high’’. Too
bad for users who abuse it, you can’t easily stop taking this
drug! An abrupt end to the use of this drug, like other drugs
whose site of action is in the brain, result in what is called

8
withdrawal symptoms- the reason for the crave
for it. Withdrawal symptoms are serious side
effects that make one fee sick. The person feels
restless, has runny nose, experience nausea,
sweats, has muscle aches, the skin may itch and
may present with watering eyes. This is a medical
emergency since it can result in death if not
urgently addressed.

Socially, the seek for this drug to high is sending the

precious youth of our country into mental deterioration.
This is alarming. The fight against Tramadol and Drug
Abuse in general is a critical issue, and it requires all
hands on deck to salvage the future of our country. The
threat is real. It is either we fight it together now or we
suffer the consequence tomorrow. To the person reading,
please Drug abuse is not a remedy for our problems or
challenges. It is not an option for our unemployment or
our disappointment. Neither is it a wise prescription for
mere fun. Let us discard drug abuse and fight against this
menace fiercely.
Drugs should only be used for what they are medically
indicated for!!!

STEVE JOBS
S
teven Jobs was born in February 24, 1955, in San Francisco,
California, and was adopted by paul and clara jobs. He grew up
with one sister, patty. Paul jobs was a machinist and fixed cars as
hobby. Jobs remembers his father us been very skilled at working his
hands.
In 1961 the family moved to mountain to view, California. This area,
just south of Palo Atto, California becoming a center for electronics.
Electronics form the basic elements of devices such as radios,
televisions, stereos, and computers. At the time people started to refer
to the area as “silicon valley”. This is because a substance cause silicon
is used in the manufacturing electronic parts.
As a child, Jobs prefers doing things by himself. He swam
competitively, but was not interested in team sports or other group
activities. He early interest in electronics and gadgetry. He spent a lot
of time working in the garage workshop of a neighbor who work at
Hewlett-Packard, an manufacturer.
Jobs also enrolled in the Hewlett-Packard Explorer Club. There he saw
engineers demonstrate new product, and he saw his first computer at
the age of 12. He was very impressed, and knew right that he wanted
to work with computers.
While in high school attended lectures at the Hewlett-Packard plant.
On one location he broadly ask Williams Hewlett (1931-2001), the
president, for some part he need to complete a class he needed.
Hewlett impressed he gave jobs the parts, and offered him a summer
internship at Hewlett-Packard.
COLLEGE AND TRAVEL
After graduating from high school 1972, Jobs attend Reed College
Portland, Oregon for two years. He dropped out to visit india to study
eastern religions in the summer 1974. In 1975 Jobs joined a group
known as Homebrew Computer club.

18
One member, a technical whiz named Steve
Wozniak(1950-) was trying to build a small
computer. Jobs became fascinated in the mar-
keting potential of such a computer. In 1978
and Wozniak formed their own company. They
call it apple computer company, in memory of
a happy summer Jobs had spent picking apples.
They raised $1300 in startup money by selling
Job’s microbus and Wozniak computer. At first
they sold circuit boards(the boards that hold the
internal component of a computer) while they
work on the computer prototype(sample).

APPLE AND PERSONAL COMPUTER ERA.

Jobs had realized there was a huge gap in the
computer market. At that time almost all the
computers were mainframe computer. They were
so large that one could fill a room and so costly
that individuals could not afford to buy them.
Advances in electronics, however meant that
computer component were getting smaller and
the power of the computer was increasing.
Jobs and Wozniak redesign their computer, with
the idea of selling it to individual users. The
Apple II went to market in 1977, with impressive
first sales of $2.7 million. The company sales
grew to $200 million within three years. This was
one of the most phenomenal cases of corporate
growth in USA history. Jobs and Wozniak
had opened an entirely new market- personal
computers. Personal computers entirely new way
of processing information
