Some time in our future, let's say a few hundred years from now, something went bad.

It really
doesn't matter what it was, only what it caused. The death of roughly 70% of humanity unleashed
massive amounts of psychic energy. The Ley Lines, a naturally occurring planetary-wide energy
network (if you don't know what these are, here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ley_line), absorbed all
of this energy. The, now supersaturated, Ley Lines Burst to life, restoring magic to the world but also
tearing open Rifts or portals to a multitude of dimensions and realms. The combined effects of the Ley
Line Storms and the extra dimensional incursions reduced humanity even further and devastated the
world.
Humanity huddled, and fought, and generally scrapped by. They relearned or recovered much
of the technology of their ancestors, but they remained unorganized. Think a higher tech mad max.
That went on for a good long while.
In what is considered Year 1 P.A. (post apocalypse) The Coalition was formed in the former
state of Illinois.
It's 106 P.A. And the Coalition is run by Emperor Karl Prosek. It's a human supremacy. The
coalition seeks to wipe all dimensional beings from the earth and it also hates magic and distrusts
psionics (there are some psionics involved in the CSA military, but the numbers are small). Their army
dresses all in black and there are skulls on everything. Their primary domain is Chi-Town, not actually
Chicago (That's a nightmare ruin full of rifts and monsters) but near by. There are a few other coalition
states.
There is also a large nation of magic users of dubious morals. That's called the Federation of
Magic. Between the Coalition and the Federation is The Devil's gate. Basically the St. Lois arch turned
into a giant, permanent hell-mouth. It's a bad time.
There's many other nations or city states, but they are mostly small. Tolkeen (yes, they called it
that, I know) is up in Minnesota and is a pretty tolerant and cool place. They like magic users and
psionics and things. But they have a bug problem (being Rifts earth, that means a BIG bug problem).
There is also Lazlo, which is also a pretty chill place run by a Dragon who is quite friendly. The rest of
the immediate surrounds is wilderness, small communities, and a kind of wild west attitude. There's
other stuff further east and west as well as the whole rest of the world and an innumerable amount of
dimensions, but we'll be hanging around the midwest for a while, so i'm not going to explain what's
going on in, say, Germany.
So, basically, We've got Mad Max meets a western in the wilds and Blade Runner in the cities.
There are giant robots and power armor and laser guns and hovercraft. There are also wizards and elves
and all kinds of races (D-Bees they call 'em) all over the place. Dragons and demons and all kinds of
nonsense.
You can play as a pilot of an awesome mech, or a permanently roided up super soldier (think
bane, but they only live for a few years 'cause of the drugs), or a super powerful psychic, or a wizard,
or a high tech Jedi Knight stand-in, or an uplifted humanoid dog who can smell magic, etc. There are
many cool options. And we're using Savage Worlds for this so you can go off the reservation so to
speak and use the M.A.R.S. Framework to kind of cobble together basically whatever you want, like a
cyber-doc who dabbles in necromancy, or an orcish techno-paladin.
