Lesson Idea Name: Vacation Poll

Content Area: ELA
Grade Level(s): 10th
Content Standard Addressed: ELAGSE9-10SL1: Initiate and participate effectively in a range of collaborative
discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grades 9–10 topics, texts, and
issues, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively.

Technology Standard Addressed: Students recognize the rights, responsibilities and opportunities of living,

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Students will be using this tool to start a discussion on world literature and how it effects students and the
world in general. By asking an open ended question where there is no right or wrong answer, it gives
students an opportunity to discuss freely their personal experience as well as their opinion. This supports a
UDL framework because it is engaging students as well as creating a collaborative effort in thinking of how
World Literature is important. This is also being used as an introduction to world literature, so it also gives
students a preview of how the class is going to look and prepare them for the rest of the year. Using
Nearpod as a response tool will be a big part of the discussions over the entire year, so getting them
familiar with it at the beginning gives them a chance to understand it better as well.
Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
The poll will be used during the first week of school, most likely on the second day of class after the
formalities have been gone over. I will start by asking students what does world literature mean to them
and ask if it has affected them in any way. Their answer will most likely be that it has not affected them,
and that is when I will start talking about how I have traveled and the books that I read and how they have
affected me. I will then ask them to get out their phones or tablets and follow the link so that they can tell
me where they have been this past summer.
Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):

Student Response and Assessment Tools
☐ Assess prior knowledge ☒ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☐ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☐ Test preparation
☒ Survey/Poll ☒ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

The students will use their phone or tablet to follow the link to the Nearpod poll and wait for the teacher to
begin. The teacher will explain what the students should do once the poll is brought up. Students can choose
more than one answer and will then need to wait until all of their classmates have answered before talking.
Once all students have answered, I will show the responses and as a class, a discussion will begin on where
they went and what they saw. This activity should not last more than 20 minutes.
Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):
☐ Multiple choice ☒ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☐ Yes ☒ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☐ Yes
☒ No
Why or why not?
There is no right or wrong answer, so corrective feedback is not needed.
Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?
After the poll and discussion, I will then ask students again if world literature effected them in any way
after the discussion of the world and traveling. I will also give them examples of how it does in fact have an
impact on the world and the type of impact it has us as individuals. The teacher will prompt the students
with questions and let students lead the discussion.
How will the data be used?
The information from this poll will not be used for a grade, however students do have a participation grade
and it will be noted if students do not participate in the poll or the discussion. This is a fun starting point for
students to start a discussion. I will share the data with the class and we will all talk about the results and the
more specifics of their responses. I do think this can be used to help teachers also understand family
backgrounds which can lead to differentiation for students. If a student answered that they did not go
anywhere and then asked if they did anything, their response can shed some light on their home life and the
resources they may or may not have.
Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.
I have never tried Nearpod with students or done an interactive real time poll in the classroom. I am hoping
the students find it engaging and that they really get into the discussion. I hope students will learn why world
literature is important and how it’s fun! I also hope that I learn from my students whether they enjoy using
the response tool so that I can prepare to use it for other lessons.
Reflective Practice:
The activities can impact students through discussion and engagement. It is most likely something students
have never used before, so doing something new especially in terms of technology usually gets students

involved and engaged. Once students have discussed where they went and as a class discussed the impact of
world literature, the lesson will be further extended by asking students to pick a country. Once students have
picked a country, they will then pick a book from that selected country to find information on not only the
book, but the impact the book had on the country or maybe possibly the world. Students can use Nearpod to
create a presentation of their book and country to further expand upon the lesson.
