Measurement Procedure - Molspin Magnetometer

1. Open the program by double-clicking the icon Double click

The following window will appear

North component Name/No of the Specimen

Spin Position

2. Select SER 1 (Serial Port 1) and SHORT (Short Spin). Also keep the SET
GAIN (in the instrument) in maximum position.
3. Calibrate the instrument using the following steps
3.1. Click spin to run an initial spin
3.2. Then enter the value shown on the calibration specimen in the space
given in the program CAL= 1113 and click on CAL=
(For e.g.1113)

1
3.3. Then click spin again and check the north component in the table
(first column in the table). It should show ±10% of 1113.
3.4. If the north component is close to 1113, then the instrument is
Calibrated and is ready for measurements.
Note: While calibrating the instrument, make sure that the attenuator
position is in ‘1’position. Also make sure that the instrument is in RS
232 mode

4. Measurements:

4.1. Click on output File in the Program Window. The following window
will appear. This will help you to save the results automatically in a text file.

Give the File name and click OK in the above window.

4.2. Sample positions:

Position 1 Position 2 Position 3 Position 4

(Dotted line indicates backside of the specimen)

2
4.3. Keep the specimen in First Position in the specimen holder, keeping the
v- Notch or slit towards the observer and then click spin
Instrument will take few seconds time for spinning and the result will be
displayed in the first row of the table in the Program window.

4.4. Now click the next button in the program window and observe whether
the spin position is changed or not in the upper right hand side corner in the
program window.

4.5. Now keep the Specimen in Second Position and click spin

4.6. Follow the same for third and fourth positions also by clicking next every
time

4.7. After four spins, click on Sp4= to get the result. The Result will be
displayed in the empty space provided for the result in the Program window.

4.8. Now Click on save to save the result in the output file created in the
beginning (see Step 4.1)

4.9. To measure new specimen click new and follow the steps 4.3 to 4.8

(Note: To be on safer side copy this result in another text file separately
and save it in another location)

4.10. After completing all the measurements, close the program by clicking QUIT
But, before quitting the program close the output file by clicking close file

Procedure for IRM measurement
using Molspin magnetometer & Pulsed field magnetometer

1. Calibrate Molspin Magnetometer using following steps.

1.1. Put on Computer and open the Molspin Program.

1.2. Select SHORT and SER 1 in the program
1.3. Click spin to run an initial spin
1.4. Then enter the value shown on the calibration specimen in the space
given in the program CAL= 1113 and click on CAL=
(For e.g.1113)
1.5. Then click spin again and check the north component in the table
(first column in the table). It should show ±10% of 1113.
1.6. If the north component is close to 1113, then the instrument is
Calibrated and is ready for measurements.
Note: While calibrating the instrument, make sure that the attenuator
position is in ‘1’position. Also make sure that the instrument is in RS
232 mode

2. Put on the Pulsed field Magnetizer

3. Set the required field by pressing “set field” button. (Up to 150 mT, field can
be set by using ‘A (mT) ‘. For higher fields you have to select “A (T)”. That
means if you want to set 300 mT field, you have select ‘A(T), and set field as 0.3
T)

4. Forward field: Keep the specimen in the specimen holder (Coil A) with arrow
on the specimen away from the observer.

5. Press ‘start’ in the pulsed field magnetizer. Forward field

6. Once the set field is applied, take out the specimen and measure in the
Molspin magnetometer in Third Position of NRM measurement.

7. Note down the value of the north component shown in the Molspin
Program.

8. Follow the steps 3 to 7 with increasing fields (up to 1 Tesla)

9. Reveres field: Repeat the steps described above for the reversed fields, i.e.
keeping the specimen in the opposite direction to the step 4 in the pulsed field
magnetizer.

Reversed field

10. Continue the experiment till the value of the north component becomes
negative

11. Then stop the experiment and proceed with the new specimen.

12. Plot the data using XL

Calibration

1. Make ‘zero setting’ by using adjusting knobs on both the units.

2. When it comes to Ready position (i.e. green light on), press Start button and
keep the Calibration sample in the sample holder. Instrument will take few
moments and the result will be displayed on the instrument monitor. It should
show 1167. Note that while calibrating, the Range should be 5.

If this value of 1167 (or nearest value) is seen on the instrument, that
means the instrument is calibrated

3. Now, put on computer

4. Enter Date and Time

7
5. Type the following on the computer monitor

C:\kly3 press enter button

C:\kly3>ani20bas press enter button

Now a blue window will appear

6. Press insert button

It will ask for any changes. Press N for ‘No”

7. Give File Name and press enter button

8. Give path (e.g. C:\directory name).

Note: If the directory is not created, create the directory first)

9. Give the Operator Name

10. Give the Specimen Name

11. Give the Specimen Volume (11.13)

12. Enter Holder Susceptibility (Check it and enter; it will be between 0 and -3)

13. It will ask for any changes. Press N for ‘No”

14. Find measuring range: Press Enter button

15. Now start measuring in 15 positions (See instrument manual for 15 directions)

16. To measure in First Position, press Space Bar.

Instrument will ask for 1st positionÆ after beep sound keep the specimen
in the specimen holder. Take out the specimen when the result is
displayed on the instrument monitor.

17. Again press Space bar for Second Position

18. Continue this for 15 positions

19. Press Continue for saving the result.
