#Preparation_Advice_Thread
Hello friends,
For those of you who don't know me, I'll introduce myself as CAT 100 percentile, XAT AIR 1,
CMAT AIR 5.
I really want to thank you all for making this group what it is. This is the only facebook group for
CAT preparation that I have joined and all of you have really helped me fill my forms at the right
time, in the right way. The questions posted here are also really good for practice. So thanks a
lot!
I'm getting a lot of queries from a lot of you regarding how to prepare, etc. and while it's not
physically possible for me to reply to each of them, I'd really like to help you guys out. So I'll post
a general answer here. If you have any further queries, please comment on this thread instead of
pinging me or sending a friend request.
Here's how I prepared:
I started with TIME modules as they're the only coaching available where I stayed. I finished
them in the summer vacations and started giving AIMCATs. I analysed the AIMCATs and
realised that my calculation speed was slow (I didn't know tables, even uptil 10x10!) So I saw
some youtube videos on Vedic Mathematics, loved them, and incorporated them into my style of
solving. By the time college started, I knew the common methods of solving questions but I still
couldn't complete the paper in time, especially because of the new pattern. I knew that practice
can increase speed a little, but not too much. That's when I searched extensively for shortcut
strategies which focus on logic instead of formulae (My memory is terrible. I never remember
formulae or names or places). I really liked CETking shortcut workshops, especially the ratio-
proportion videos. Sir can correlate seemingly unrelated chapters of Quant to basics of ratios
with such grace and beauty! In my last semester on campus, I just saw these videos and
installed an app, Magoosh, to improve my vocabulary (It has GRE word lists, but they're apt for
CAT). For the last two weeks before CAT, I took a complete holiday from college, went home and
solved Career Launcher mocks. I shifted to CL because, while AIMCATs' analysis is required
initially, towards the end, you need a mock that has the same difficulty level and user interface as
CAT. In fact, I went one step further. For 14 days, I followed the exact same schedule - I had the
same breakfast at the same time, went for a walk while listening to the exact same songs, and
started my mock at the exact same time as the real CAT. That made sure my body was prepared
for CAT on the D-day. Sounds crazy, but it worked!
Here's how you can prepare:
There are fifteen other 100 percentilers with me. They didn't do what I did. Telling you how to
prepare is like telling you which shoe to buy! It depends on your shoe size, colour preferences
and budget. So PLEASE don't blindly follow what I did. It was customised to my strengths -
adaptability and good English - and my weaknesses - bad memory and slow calculations. The
point, however, is that I was not perfect to begin with. I was just focused.
Still, there are a few things that would be common to most toppers, I think. They definitely helped
me and although they'll sound vague, that's how they're supposed to sound because they apply
to everyone on Earth! So here's some advice:
1. Don't let your focus waver. Don't ever forget your aim.
2. Believe in yourself. The one who wins is the one who thinks he can. Don't be afraid of setting a
high target.
3. Ignore others. Prepare the way you want to. You know yourself best!
4. Give AIMCATs. No, TIME didn't pay me to say this. I actually mean it. In the analysis, they
provide some amazing data like the time taken by you on each and every question versus the
average time spent by all candidates on that question. Invest some time analysing this data. Find
out the areas which slow you down and work on them. Formulate strategies, apply them and
modify them continuously.
5. Recognise that exams are not just technical/logical. They are psychological as well. Find out
your risk appetite, mental stamina, topics of interest and effective ways of motivation. Predict
your moods in the short-term and long-term, and plan accordingly. Nobody says these things, but
they're extremely important.
6. Have the right people in your life. Make sure your parents/spouse/siblings share your dream
and stay away from people who say you can't do it.
7. Enjoy the journey! Nobody excels at what they're punished/forced to do.
All the best!
PS: Your queries are most welcome, but please remember, I can't answer very specific
questions regarding your preparation since I don't know your personal strengths and
weaknesses. Also, I'm not from Maharashtra, so I don't know about the paper pattern of MHCET.
I guess my advice would be best for those planning to give CAT/XAT/CMAT next year.
Edit: Since some of you requested
1. Here's a link for vedic maths tricks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XCmhpkTqPU
2. Here's a good demo video of CETking shortcut workshops. It shows why sometimes common
sense is better than several hours of practice.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EUyighAefqA...

Neha Manglik @Sarang: For RCs, you need a good reading speed. Practice reading news and articles on a
computer screen. Secondly, while giving mocks, focus on understanding the mood of the author or his purpose
even if you take more time initially. Thirdly, attempt all questions and calculate your accuracy over 10 RCs.
Mostly, we're too afraid of answering because the question is confusing, but it turns out we were right all along. If
your accuracy is over 50%, it'll increase further with practice and you just have to get rid of your fear of
attempting. If less than 50%, practise steps 1 and 2. All the best!

Neha Manglik @all: Number of hours depend on number of weaknesses and how customised your preparation
is. Don't spend 1000 hours practicing addition of single digit numbers! Prepare according to your needs and
available time. My routine was not fixed either. A fixed routine irritates me. Find out your personality and prepare
accordingly.

always pushed u to crack the cat? And what perctile u were aiming for in cat?

Neha Manglik @Rishabh: That's an interesting question and I'm glad you brought it up. From day one, my aim
was 100 percentile. I worked to crush any weakness that I may have. Mock percentiles didn't matter to me. In
every mock, I found out ten questions which took more time to solve than the other 90 and I looked for ways to
speed up those. People around me motivated me continuously and I focussed on competing with myself. My
advice to you: aim high because you cannot shoot the moon with an arrow. Your preparation will be according to
your goal and you cannot exceed your goal by chance.

Neha Manglik @vaibhav: I finished most of my preparation in the summer vacations so it doesn't clash. On
campus, I solved Chemical engineering problems using Vedic Mathematics and played on Magoosh app when I
got bored or was waiting for someone. It helped further. You'll have to plan your priorities well in advance. Keep
your CG high enough so that a drop in CG in that semester does not affect your chances of getting into good B-
schools. I also ignored campus placements almost entirely. You may choose the same if you're sure of your
goals.

Neha Manglik @vaibhav: Work ex is not necessary.
@Prithviraj: If you gave CAT, Then I'm not 'di' to you
One trick I followed was to not read the RC passage at all! Sometimes, we already know what the passage is
talking about (like Marxism/communism, wars, etc.) Since RC questions are concept-based, if you have read a lot
about a lot of diverse fields, you can skip reading passages completely. However, that's a high-risk technique, so
I'll suggest you try it in mocks and analyse your success rate before applying it in CAT.
I didn't use any other mocks or books (including Arun Sharma). So I don't know. Explore!

Neha Manglik @Ashish: I didn't do much for GK other than reading newspapers. I don't know how I got a good
score in that!
Regarding mocks, I maintained a notebook of shortcuts and tricks that I learnt all through my preparation
(including vedic maths and CETking ideas). So I didn't revise previous mocks. I just read those 15-20 pages at
the end.
My advice: Don't fill your mind with methods of solving specific questions. Fill it with ideas that allow versatility
and enable you to tackle new kinds of questions.
@all: Before you ask, that notebook is quite coded and customised and uploading it won't help you. Trust me, I
would have uploaded it already otherwise.

Neha Manglik @Rajveer: That's why you need to give CL Mocks in the end. But while preparing, it's best to
prepare for the worst. DO NOT look at your percentile. It doesn't matter. Your aim should be to increase your
score in each consecutive test. There's no reason to get demoralised then. Also, I think Rav sir keeps motivating
us on this group, so that shouldn't be a problem. Rest is upto each individual to decide for themselves.

I read 'The Hindu' for English, for news and out of interest.
Other than that, I try reading everything online, so I just google it and read it (Wikipedia being my favourite
source). I also like discussing news with people more than reading it, so I keep myself surrounded with people
who read a lot. My advice to you: Read whatever makes you feel interested. Don't turn this into a punishment.

surprised at my result! But I request all of you not to make the mistake I made. Give mocks and study for XAT
seriously. It's a very important exam for a very prestigious institute. That said, I don't know how to prepare for
XAT, so I can't answer your question.

CAT?
9 hrs · Edited · Like

Neha Manglik @Vishnu: I'm glad you brought this up. I was VERY active socially in my college, especially in the
final year. I took part in competitions, hung out with friends and treated lots of juniors. I wrote poems and painted
and organised a small puppet show. The more we do, the more we can do. I don't believe in sitting at home all
alone. If you are an extrovert, don't deny yourself the chance to be with friends. If you are an introvert, don't deny
yourself your space. Don't make your personality your own enemy. Take it along and see how it can help you.
For example, I challenged all my friends with CAT questions and in the process, realised some really amazing
ways of solving them. I also encouraged fellow CAT aspirants from my college to ask me their doubts. This
helped them and helped me practice too.

Neha Manglik @Haider: I do have a summary notebook, as I said in a previous comment. But I used to
intuitively use a lot of Rav sir's methods even before I saw his videos. So they are missing in the notes. Also, they
form the base for understanding even the tricks that are in the notebook. So I suggest you go through the
CETking videos and Vedic maths videos and make the summary yourself. It'll help you much more. These are
world-view changing ideas. You can't implement them within a month anyway, if that's what you were planning.

@Kartikeya: I've given a few mock interviews, I'm reading/watching news, I'm revising all of Chemical

is all that's required to crack interviews.
@Sharma Vedanta: Ahmedabad is the only college that is particular about high CG. 7 is good, don't let it slip
down any further. Work on your CAT score and personality. Become a person nobody can ever say no to! Marks
won't mean anything ultimately. It's your personality that matters - in B-school admissions and in life.

Neha Manglik @Rahul: I liked solving mocks because they are full of puzzles and have new types of questions
each time. The RCs give me knowledge of a diverse set of topics which no newspaper or magazine can. So my
driving force was CAT itself. I didn't worry too much about my mock percentiles so there weren't any hard times,
as such. I wanted to keep improving and I challenged myself to get a 100. Of course, during non-CAT-related
hard times, my family and friends were always with me

to take the fear out of your head. One year is a long enough time to learn anything! First try to understand that
maths is predictable. It follows set rules and the rules produce the same results every time. All you need to do is
know the rules. Once you get rid of the fear, start with easy questions, build a level of comfort and then gradually
increase difficulty. All the best!

@Lasya: If your percentile is good, nobody can say no to you. They want good students no matter where they
come from.
@Rajkumar: I'm not based in Mumbai, so I couldn't attend workshops. Only online videos.

Rajkumar RK No online course was there.. Did u take that?

Neha Manglik @Rajveer: that's upto you to decide. I finished my syllabus before starting mocks because I
wanted to complete my preparation in the summer vacations itself and mocks only start in June.
@Suman: Cover all sections yourself before watching shortcut workshops, or at least side by side. Although they
cover most topics, I don't think all questions can have shortcuts! You need to pay separately and enroll.

especially when we are able to solve IIt level problems but sometimes get stuck in some typical type quant props
