MUSIC SERIES

Banda Rito, Banda Roon: CCP Band and Orchestra Festival 2018
Exciting concerts and exhibitions await the public in this grand gathering of youth orchestras and
symphonic bands from all over the country, with performances by 14 groups and more than 800 young
performers including internationally-trained twirlers. Banda Rito, Banda Roon features a grand concert
of youth orchestras, youth symphonic band concerts, open air brass exhibition of the best of the best
performers from different bands, and small ensemble performances. Aside from the live music

Asian Youth Orchestra (AYO) Concert


Counted “amongst the finest youth orchestras around the world,” (San Francisco Chronicle), the award-
winning Asian Youth Orchestra (AYO), recipient of Japan’s Praemium Imperiale and Nikkei Asia Prize,
performs in Manila as part of its 2018 Concert Tour. The Manila leg concerts feature internationally-
awarded soloists Yu-Chien “Benny” Tseng on violin and Anna Tsybuleva on piano, with conductors James
Judd and Richard Pontzious conducting classical masterpieces by Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev, Wagner,
Barber, Enescu and Gershwin.

Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra’s 45th Anniversary Series Concerts


The Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra (PPO) is the country’s leading orchestra and is widely regarded as
one of the top musical ensembles in the Asia-Pacific region. The PPO has performed with many of the
world’s renowned conductors and with the best foreign and Filipino artists.

Technical Rehearsal is a fascinating opportunity to watch the PPO at work, and see how a piece of

Akapela Open International 2018


Spear-headed by The Music School of Ryan Cayabyab, Akapela Open is a competition for contemporary
a cappella ensemble singing. This competition is deemed to be the first of its kind in the country. It aims
to promote the love for contemporary a cappella singing and the appreciation for vocal harmony
performance; to provide a venue for new arrangements of Philippine and international contemporary
vocal music; to provide growth experiences for singers and arrangers; and to cultivate a community of
contemporary a cappella singers. Akapela Open International is open to all contemporary a cappella
singing ensembles in and outside the country which are either all male, all female or mixed voices. It is
open to groups with a minimum of 3 to a maximum of 12 singers. The finals will be held at the CCP Main
Theater.

NAMCYA (National Music Competitions for Young Artists)


The NAMCYA has been a principal instrument in discovering major music talents from all over the
country. Its project involves some 1 million musicians, trainers and administrations, in a long and tedious
process of selecting the best among them from all seventeen regions, annually.

Philippine Madrigal Singers


The world-renowned Philippine Madrigal Singers (“Madz”) hold the distinction of being the first choir in
the world to win the European Grand Prix for Choral Singing twice (1997 and 2007). The ensemble
performs a wide repertoire of various styles and forms: renaissance music, classical music, Filipino and
international folksongs, contemporary and avant-garde music, opera and even popular music. Their
specialization and focus on the madrigal idiom has inspired their unique set-up of singing while seated in
a semi-circle, without a conductor.

Anniversary Concert
The internationally-renowned and multi-awarded Philippine Madrigal Singers returns to the CCP concert
hall as it celebrates its 55th Anniversary. A special program of new and exciting ideas that are sure to

Pulso Filipinas: Filipino Dance Gala 2018


A dance production celebrating unity in dance and showcasing the country’s outstanding artists and
dance groups, PULSO FILIPINAS highlights the Philippines’ diverse dance culture with works ranging from
ethnic/folk, contemporary, hip-hop/jazz, ballroom to classical ballet. Under the artistic direction of Paul
Morales, the event also includes workshops, forum, dance talks, and other dance appreciation activities.

Ballet Philippines 49th Season Productions


Ballet Philippines (BP) is the preeminent professional classical and contemporary dance company in the
country, widely recognized today as a cornerstone of contemporary Filipino identity. The first resident
company of the CCP, it was founded in 1969 by National Artist for Dance Alice Reyes and Eddie Elejar.

Carmina Burana
Ballet Philippines brings together icons of the performing arts to present one of the most popular choral
works of the classical repertoire, Carmina Burana. With Carl Orff’s magnum opus performed by the
Philippine Madrigal Singers and the ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra on special nights, National Artist
Alice Reyes’ masterwork is an overwhelming feast for the senses not to be missed!

Carmen and Other Dances


No other Philippine dance company has the breadth and depth of Ballet Philippines’ repertoire and

Tales of the Manuvu


Noong Unang Panahon… This iconic song about how far the gap between heaven and earth has
widened, nature has become less benign, and goodwill among men has disappeared came from BP’s
original modern ballet Tales of the Manuvu. Choreographed and directed by Alice Reyes, Tales based on
the retelling of the origin myths of the Manuvu. National Artist for Literature Bien Lumbera wrote the
script and lyrics for the music of Nonong Pedero while Broadway theater designer Loy Arcenas creates
all-new sets. Don’t miss this entertainingly clever take on the enmity between the gods of good and evil,
the creation of man and his empowerment.

Philippine Ballet Theatre 32nd Season Productions


The Merry Widow
PBT’s own version of the operetta by well-acclaimed Hungarian composer Franz Lehár. It is skilfully
crafted to appeal to the Filipino audience’s inherent eye for passion, melodrama and “vida or
contravida” counter play through a series of intimate pas de deux and ballroom dance scenes with both
provocative and witty choreographic treatment by Ronilo Jaynario.. The story is set in Paris, the city of
love, at a time of illicit affairs and a free-wheeling lifestyle that was most taboo at that time. A life of
forbidden and rekindled love, wealth, power and deceit.

Cinderella
PPBT presents a story about a poor orphan who turns into a princess with the help of a fairy godmother.
The well-loved story is by French choreographer Jean Paul Comelin and staged by PBT’s artistic director

The Bayanihan Philippine National Folk Dance Company is the oldest dance company in the Philippines.

Now on its 14th year, the annual festival of fresh one-act plays continues to attract theatergoers with
remarkable works by emerging and established playwrights. Established in 2005, the Virgin Labfest aims
to provide our playwrights a venue to present their unpublished, untried, untested and unstaged works
to theater-going public.

Ang Pagbabalik-Tanaw sa Unang Hari ng Balagtasan


An onstage which celebrates the life and works of Filipino poet Jose Corazon de Jesus, also known as
Huseng Batute, and his contributions to Philippine literature, music, and culture, as narrated by
renowned theater actors and leading contemporary performers. Ang Pagbabalik-Tanaw navigates the
audience through Philippine history, literature and culture. With its highly educational, informative and
interactive content, the Manila premiere in May 2018 received critical acclaim and raves from students,
teachers and other audiences. Aside from its educational aspect, the production offers total
entertainment in one performance package which features poetry readings by leading actors,
contemporary dance performances, classical renditions of kundimans, ventriloquism, balagtasan in its
traditional and modern rap form called fliptop, and other artistic performances.

Baka Naman Hindi (A Flea in Her Ear)


A play by Georges Feydeau written in 1907, at the height of the Belle Époque and translated by Virgilio
“Beer” Flores as Dr Pinacate (Dr Finache). In this farcical French play set in France at the turn of the 20th
Century, a woman, suspecting her lawyer husband of having an affair, plots to catch him in the act.

Tanghalang Pilipino 32nd Theater Season


Founded in 1987 as the resident theater company of the CCP, TANGHALANG PILIPINO aims to promote
Philippine theater that is rooted in centuries-old Filipino culture and history while being responsive to
evolving contemporary society.

Balag / Angud, A Musical


TP’s 32nd Season opens with Balag Angud, an original Filipino musical written by Palanca award winner
Layeta Bucoy, with music by Dodjie Fernandez of PATATAG fame and direction by Audie Gemora. Balag
Angud dramatizes the life of installation artist Junyee (or Luis Yee Jr.) and his choosing to pursue his art
against all odds.

Ang Pag-Uusig (Arthur Miller’s The Crucible)


Last Season’s critically-acclaimed Ang Pag-uusig, a translation of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible by Jerry
Respeto, will be restaged and directed again by Dennis Marasigan. Winner of six Philstage Gawad Buhay
Awards, the timely Ang Pag-uusig depicts a community ruled by controlling, self-righteous elite, and the
crucial choices each of its members must make in a time of crisis.

Manila Notes
Third in the 32nd Season lineup is Manila Notes, a Philippine version of the play Tokyo Notes by
Japanese playwright Oriza Hirata, who also directs this production, with translation by Rody Vera. Set in
the lobby of an art museum amid war and family conflicts, this piece of “quiet theater” chooses
naturalistic silence, whispers and muted confrontations over typical drama.

Coriolanus
A translation of William Shakespeare’s Coriolanus by Guelan Luarca, with direction by Carlos Siguion-
Reyna, Coriolanus is one of the rarely staged Shakespeare plays, which tells the story of a legendary
Roman soldier who engages in politics, but whose temper and tyrannical personality lead him to choose
allegiances that bring about his downfall.

The PPO, with Maestro Herminigildo Ranera conducting, introduces the rudiments of classical music to
young audiences, with an entertaining lecture-demo format. With the help of a narrator, young

sections of the orchestra in a fun and enjoyable way as the country’s leading orchestra performs
timeless pieces that are well-loved by young audiences including light classics, film music, pops and
popular show tunes arranged for the symphony orchestra.

A unique Halloween experience showcasing a fun-filled concert that aims to inspire the new generation
of young audiences to enjoy classical music through a colorful production with relevant themes and
narration. Pre-concert activities include a musical instruments petting zoo, trick-or-treat and other

This choral festival features local school and church choirs from Metro Manila and nearby provinces in

Ang Pagbabalik-Tanaw sa Unang Hari ng Balagtasan


An onstage which celebrates the life and works of Filipino poet Jose Corazon de Jesus, also known as
Huseng Batute, and his contributions to Philippine literature, music, and culture, as narrated by
renowned theater actors and leading contemporary performers. Ang Pagbabalik-Tanaw navigates the
audience through Philippine history, literature and culture. With its highly educational, informative and
interactive content, the Manila premiere in May 2018 received critical acclaim and raves from students,
teachers and other audiences. Aside from its educational aspect, the production offers total
entertainment in one performance package which features poetry readings by leading actors,
contemporary dance performances, classical renditions of kundimans, ventriloquism, balagtasan in its
traditional and modern rap form called fliptop, and other artistic performances.
