Language B is an additional language-learning course designed for students with some previous learning of the
language. It may be studied at either SL or HL. The main focus of the course is on language acquisition and
development of language skills. These language skills will be developed through the study and use of a range of written
and spoken material. Such material will extend from everyday oral exchanges to literary texts, and will often be
related to the culture(s) concerned. The material will be chosen to enable students to develop mastery of language
skills and intercultural understanding.
!
There are six assessment objectives for the IB French B course. Students will be assessed on their ability to:
1. communicate clearly and effectively in a range of situations, demonstrating linguistic competence and
intercultural understanding.
2. use language appropriate to a range of interpersonal and/or cultural contexts.
3. understand and use language to express and respond to a range of ideas with accuracy and fluency.
4. organize ideas on a range of topics, in a clear, coherent and convincing manner.
5. understand, analyze and respond to a range of spoken and written texts.
6. understand and use works of literature written in the target language (HL only).

Evaluation: The FCPS grading scale will be used in class.
A (93-100) = 4.0 B+ (87-89) = 3.3 C+ (77-79) = 2.3 D+ (67-69) = 1.3 F (below 64) =
0.0

A- (90-92) = 3.7 B (83-86) = 3.0 C (73-76) = 2.0 D (64-66) = 1.0
B- (80-82) = 2.7 C- (70-72) = 1.7
!
Grading: The components used to arrive at your grade are the test average, quiz average, homework grade,
presentations/projects and daily class work/participation grades. Grades for each quarter are weighted as follows.
! 1. Tests (30%): Essays will be assigned a test grade. For each day late, there will be a 5 point deduction from
the overall grade. Essays will be graded according to the appropriate IB criteria. Projects (written / oral) will
be assigned either a test or quiz grade. Students will be notified in advance.
!
2. Quizzes (40%): Written and/or oral quizzes will be given weekly throughout the quarter. Oral evaluations will
be graded according to the appropriate IB criteria. Projects (written / oral) will be assigned either a test or
quiz grade. Students will be notified in advance.
!
* Students will be permitted to retake quizzes and tests within three class periods after the original assessment
has been returned. Students must complete remediation efforts as determined by the teacher. The retake may
include all or part of the original assessment or an alternative assessment. Each assessment may be retaken only
once. The highest grade will be recorded in the gradebook. Essays may be rewritten after consultation with the
teacher. Oral assessments and components of the IB exam cannot be retaken.
!
3. Homework: (10%): Homework is essential because it provides reinforcement for concepts presented in
class.Homework is assigned, checked and assessed daily. In addition to written homework, students should
review notes and study vocabulary daily. Occasionally homework may be collected and assessed a quiz grade.
Late work will be accepted within three class periods for half credit.
!
4. Classwork / Participation (20%): Participation refers to in-class engagement, use of the target language, and
control of language structures. Classwork and participation may include partner, small group and whole class
activities. Students are expected to participate in all class discussions.
!
A comprehensive final exam will be given at the end of both years (1/3 scantron and/or text handling, 1/3 essay and
1/3 individual / interactive oral). The final exam will count as one-fifth of the year average.
Materials:
- loose leaf paper - 2 composition notebooks
- supplementary materials - blue / black pens / pencils / highlighters
- assignment calendar - classroom passes/agenda
- Student laptop (Don’t forget to charge it overnight!)

CLASSROOM POLICIES
1. Students are expected to arrive to class on time and to be in their seats ready to work when the bell rings.
FCPS Regulation 2234 states that “regular attendance is necessary for maximum school achievement.”
Fairfax County Public Schools requires students to be punctual and to attend school regularly.  It is
mandatory for students to report to school and to each class.
!
2. Honor and integrity are important to the development of one’s character. All students are expected to
abide by the Annandale High School Honor Code. All students are to do their own work. You may not
copy answers or assignments, INCLUDING HOMEWORK, from another student. The use of internet
translation services is prohibited! The consequences of such actions, for all persons involved, is a failing
grade for that assignment and parental contact. In addition, students will receive a discipline referral to
their administrator and may be removed from all honor societies. Do not give the teacher and/or others
the opportunity to think that you are cheating by engaging in actions that can be misinterpreted as
cheating. Link to AHS Honor Code: https://annandalehs.fcps.edu/academics/honor-code
! 3. Profanity and inappropriate language / actions will not be tolerated. Mutual respect, courtesy and
cooperation are expected of all students. If any profanity is heard, the consequence is an after school
detention.
! 4. MAKE UP WORK: Make up work is the responsibility of the student. If you are absent, you are expected to
check Blackboard (fcps.blackboard.com) or contact your teacher before returning to school to access missed
assignments. Students are to be prepared for class even if they have been absent. Coming to class
unprepared only puts you further behind. Take responsibility for yourself and your education. If you cannot
access Blackboard, you should call a classmate for the assignment or stop by class the next day you are in
school to get your make-up work. Missed assignments (including tests and quizzes) should be made up within
three class periods. Please be advised that the student will still be held responsible for the material learned
when absent. Students are encouraged to use PRIDE Time for extra support in catching up.
! 5. No gum, food or drinks are allowed in class. Water bottles are acceptable.

6.
!
Electronic devices (i.e. cell phones & listening devices) are permitted as per teacher discretion for
educational purposes only as per AHS and FCPS regulations.
! 7. Dress appropriately for class. Please refer to the student handbook for the dress code.
! 8. Bring all materials to class. Textbook, notebook, student planner, pen, pencil and paper must be brought to
class every day. Failure to bring these items inhibits your ability to participate in class activities and will
therefore ultimately result in a lower participation grade. Please cover textbooks.
! 9. EXTRA HELP: Students who are having difficulty need to stay after school or ask to be requested for Pride
Time for extra help as soon as possible! Please check for teacher availability after school. Please consult
your teacher’s Blackboard site for additional resources for help and remediation.
!
Note: You determine your success in IB French! Everyone begins the year with an A. In order to keep the A, you must
not only do well on your tests and quizzes. You should strive to succeed on oral and written assignments, turn
homework in on time and actively participate in class on a daily basis. The student who keeps his/her A throughout the
grading period has also been attentive, volunteers often, does more work than is expected, uses French as much as
possible and keeps a positive attitude!
