Lady Agatha Allistair was financially ruined. All her life she'd lived off her family inheritance.

Lady Agatha Allistair estaba económicamente arruinada. Toda su vida había vivido de la herencia familiar.

Now in later life she was borrowing money and using a valuable pearl necklace, which was a
family heirloom, as security. And now this necklace had disappeared from her home.

Faced by financial difficulties she had resorted to the only private detective in the city who
would only take payment if he solved the case.

I took the case because I didn't have anything better to do than sit in my office drinking whisky
and smoking. So when I received her call I went straight to her house.

Cogí el caso porque no tenía nada mejor que hacer que estar sentado en mi oficina bebiendo whisky y fumando.

Lady Agatha lived in one of the most majestic houses in the city in a district consisting only of
skyscrapers apart from her stately home.

It was a highly sought-after neighbourhood. She informed me that her house was the only thing
she had left…..except for the pearl necklace of course.

Era un barrio de lo más buscado. Me informó de que su casa era la única cosa que le quedaba… a excepción del
collar de perlas, por supuesto.

She showed me the safe where the necklace had been kept. It was open but hadn't been forced
open. This was the work of a professional…unless it had been staged by Lady Agatha herself…

Me enseñó la caja fuerte dónde el collar había sido custodiado. Estaba abierta pero no había sido forzada. Esto
era el trabajo de un profesional… a no ser que estuviera escenificado por Lady Agatha en persona…

I got some photos of the necklace and set off to ask around the criminal underworld in case
anybody had been trying to fence a pearl necklace. I didn’t have much hope and I was right.
Cogí algunas fotos del collar y me fui a preguntar en los bajos fondos criminales, por si alguien trataba de
vender un collar de perlas robado. No tenía mucha esperanza y estaba en lo cierto.

Anybody who had stolen that necklace wouldn't try to sell it straight away. On my way back to
the office I went past an auction house which belonged to one of the wealthiest men in the city.

Cualquiera que hubiera robado ese collar no intentaría venderlo directamente. En mi camino de vuelta a la
oficina, pasé por delate de una casa de subastas que pertenecía a uno de los hombres más ricos de la ciudad.

The bidding was about to start for several lots of jewellery and you can imagine my surprise
when I heard that there was a pearl necklace in one of the lots.

Las pujas estaban a punto de empezar para unos cuantos lotes de joyería y podéis imaginar mi sorpresa cuando
oí que había un collar de perlas en uno de los lotes.

I compared the photo of the necklace in the auction with the photo of the stolen necklace. There
was no doubt in my mind – it was Lady Agatha's.

Comparé la foto del collar de la subasta con la foto del collar robado. No había ninguna duda en mi mente: era
el de Lady Agatha.

I called the police and the owner of the necklace. It turned out that Lady Agatha had borrowed
money from the auction house owner and deposited the necklace as security.

Llamé a la policía y a la propietaria del collar. Resultó que Lady Agatha había pedido prestado dinero del
propietario de la casa de subastas y había depositado el collar como aval.

But in fact he was really after something else. He wanted to build a skyscraper on the land
where Lady Agatha's house now stood. His plan was that after losing the necklace she would
have to sell the house.

Pero en realidad él iba detrás de algo más. Quería construir un rascacielos dónde ahora se alzaba la casa de
Lady Agatha. Su plan era que, después de perder el collar de perlas, ella tendría que vender la casa.

Well, once again I solved the case. But Lady Agatha found herself without a money lender. And
I found myself without payment once again…

Bueno, una vez más he resuelto el caso. Pero Lady Agatha se ha quedado sin prestamista. Y yo me he quedado
sin mi paga una vez más…
