Statement of Purpose

The field of instrumentation and control has drawn my attentiveness right from
childhood due to an industrial visit at Oswal Chemical Fertilizer limited, Paradip,
Odisha, India. I was in 7 th grade, when my uncle, an engineer(Control &
Instrumentation), took me to his industrial site OCF, where I got fascinated in
machines and their controlling. This incidence portrayed an image in my mind to pursue my
career in the field of instrumentation and control engineering.

I was formally introduced to the sphere of Instrumentation&Control Engineering in Second

Semester of Diploma of engineering, when I attended a workshop on Robotics, Intelligent
& Unmanned System, as a part of this workshop, I learnt about the principle operation of robot
and its interfacing with computer. Further, Iwent on to do subject such as, Control
Engineering, Microprocessor,Process control, Microcontrollers&PLC. Moreover, I did a
Minor project on PID Temperature Controller under Professor R.K Garg, where I explored
myself with the practical fundamentals of control & instrumentation engineering. Thus,Iwas
propelled to pursue Bachelor of engineering in the same field. Since the first year
of under graduation, I was enthralled towards practical aspects of control
engineering. I attended a Workshop covering Programmable Logic Controller and
SCADA Software. This workshop attempted to build a new frame work to increase my
horizon for control and instrumentationengineering. In under grad curriculum,I did
a major project on Digital Submersible Pump Controller under Professor Manmohan
Singh. This project is a micro-control based water-level controller. It controls ‘on’ and ‘off’
conditions of the motor depending upon the level of water in the tank. The circuit also protects
the motor from high voltages, low voltages, fluctuations of mains power and dry running
condition.Reading relevant journals and magazines helped me for completion of this project.
.
At the moment, I have been working as an engineer (Control and Instrumentation) in GVK
Thermal Power Plant (2*270 MW), Goindwal Sahib, India. Here and now,I am supervising
Boiler, Turbine and Generator through Distributed Control System. As a DCS Engineer, I work
in graphics design, logics design, logics manipulation, troubleshooting of DCS hardware and
software. This Platform has provided me an opportunity to enhance my knowledge and dexterity
of Distributed Control System. In addition to technical knowledge I also learnt the Importance of
team work, corporate culture, and being a responsible person towards the society.

However,I still feel the urge to learn cutting edge technology in Distributed Control System and
follow the research path field. If I would be admitted to pursue MASc course in the field of
Distributed Control System that would help long way in preparing me for a career in research. I
look forward to a challenging graduate course which may be hard and exacting at times. I am
confident that I will be able to make a meaningful contribution in research developments and live
up to the high standards expected by University of Waterloo.

Sincere Regards:
Aman Shrivastava
