organization are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.

With guidance and support from peers and adults, develop and
strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing,
rewriting, or trying a new approach.
Connection to Prior to this lesson, students will have had plenty of exposure to
Students’ Lives poetry. This is the final project for the poetry unit. Students were
asked to bring in an object from home that had some sort of
meaning to them. The teacher read an object poem that she wrote
herself to give the students’ inspiration in their own poetry writing.
This poetry projects gives students the opportunity to bring their
own culture into the classroom, and proudly write about it and
eventually share their poetry with their peers.
Procedures:

10 mins Warm-up: Students will place their objects at their desk, Individual
5 senses and have time to write silently for 10 minutes. Work
While there are not many guidelines for writing
during this time, they will be encouraged to use
their 5 senses to describe the object. Poetry
format is not required, students may write in
any form at this time.
10 Partner Talk Students will turn to someone close to them, Partner Work
mins and talk about their object. This time is to
encourage the students to ask each other
questions, and allow students to remember
more things that they can jot down about their
object.
Other Notes:
Poetry anchor charts will be placed around the room.
There will be a “Poetry Inspiration” section of the classroom library where students may look
through books to get inspiration for their own writing.
Teacher will have her own object and go through the writing process alongside her students.
