WHY HIGH SCHOOL

BUDGET
PROPOSAL
THREE-YEAR PLAN

Prepared by Aubrey Chaffin, WHY High School Library Media Specialist

The library is not only a diary of the human race, but marks an
act of faith in the continuity of humanity.

Last year, WHY High School Library Media Center
provided meeting space, books, research tools, and
knowledgeable library and technical staff.

• Can you believe in this technical age, print circulation

increased 25% YOY from 2016-2017 to 2017-2018?
Students still want to hold paper books!

• During the 2017-2018 school year, 90% of students

visited the media center five times or more. In our
annual survey, students reported paper books and
meeting space as most valued.

WHY High School
WHY High School in suburban Georgia is a 9-12 school with 2,520 students. The student body is made up of 20%
economically disadvantaged students and 15/10/75 Hispanic, Black, and White. Statewide tests show proficiency in math at
56% and proficiency in reading at 58%. About 50% of students take Advanced Placement courses and of those, about 75%
take and pass the AP tests.

Highlights from the 5-year strategic school improvement plan include several initiatives:
• Partnering with cluster schools to develop consistent writing strategies K-12.
• Align strategies K-12 in all core contents.
• Incorporate social and emotional lessons across the curriculum.

The school’s core developed culture includes four core mindsets:

• Maximizing instructional time
• Writing across the curriculum
• Ongoing communication with all stakeholders
• Student academic agency

Needs
We would like to renew
subscriptions that have seen
significant circulation this
year.

Because the school’s 5-year

strategic plan emphasizes
writing, the media center staff
would like to develop a writing
makerspace with a few key
components:

• Tables and comfortable

seating dedicated to
writing.
• A student writing center
staff for student writing
help.
• A collection of writing texts

Because the library’s 5-year

goals include increasing
circulation, the second
budgetary need is to refresh

the fiction and nonfiction
BUDGET PROJECTIONS
With a recommended allotment of $13/student for secondary libraries, that gives WHY library $32,760 per year.
