After 12 years of service, Tonia Chisholm has left the Franklin County Public
Library to pursue other opportunities. It was great to see these familiar faces at
her Farewell Reception held all day on June 26th. Best wishes and Thank You, Tonia
Chisholm, you will be missed!
Congratulations on the official retirement of George Jackson. A wonderful
celebration was held on Saturday, June 30th to commemorate his 55 years with
Jackson’s Ace Hardware and his continuing part in community service. Bucket
sale, food, beverages and of course, cake! His work shirt has been framed & will
be displayed at the store.
The Mobile Mammogram bus was also in town June 30th at the Franklin County
Public Library offering a convenient location for free mammograms to residents of
Franklin County. Discussions have already begun about them returning to the area
this October during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The Carrabelle Fire Department has a wonderful new flag pole donated by
Woodmen of the World and Woodman Life Organization. A dedication ceremony
was held June 30th and appreciation for all our volunteer firefighters in Carrabelle
was shown from all that attended. Everyone is proud of the new flagpole &
American flag, flying high above the Carrabelle Firehouse. Thank you to the
Woodmen of the World and our volunteer firefighters!
Congratulations to County Commissioner Cheryl Sanders. At their annual
conference, the Florida Association of Counties (FAC), Cheryl received a
Leadership Award and Lifetime Achievement Award from the Statewide Small
County Coalition. From FAC, she was recognized for Florida Counties Foundation
and for being on the Board of Directors. She has been actively participating with
them since 2002! The County Commission and I are proud of Cheryl! She is now
and has always been diligent to help Franklin County and others as well!

Apalachicola Riverkeepers -6/27 -- Today's Supreme Court
decision is positive news for the Apalachicola River, Floodplain,
and Bay—especially the communities dependent on it. In their
decision, the Justices wrote: "Florida made a sufficient showing
that the extra water that would result from its proposed
consumption cap would both lead to increased streamflow in
Florida’s Apalachicola River and significantly redress the economic
and ecological harm that Florida has alleged.” The case will be
sent back to a Special Master. This proceeding will allow Florida
to present evidence of the ecologic and economic harm suffered
along with potential solutions for equitable sharing of the water
of the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint River systems.
Rio Carrabelle Gallery is a unique ART destination located in the
Rio Carrabelle building in beautiful downtown Carrabelle at the
intersection of Highway 98 and Route 67/Tallahassee Street. Now
open Fri & Sat 11 am-5pm; Sun 12-5 pm; and Mon & Tues 11 am-
5 pm. This historic building has been renovated and is one of the
very best places to experience and purchase local art. Art classes
and demonstrations will be offered in the future.

Franklin County School Administration would like to thank everyone who
participated in the school uniform survey. It has been decided FCS will NOT
have a school uniform, but will have a dress code policy. The dress code policy
is being revised and they will publish the policy as soon as it is board approved.

The City of Panama City and Friends of the Governor Stone, Inc. held a Ribbon
Cutting Ceremony on Thursday, June 28th at 10:00 a.m. for a new floating
dock at the St. Andrews Marina that will serve as the home for the National
Historic Landmark schooner, Governor Stone.
The City received a Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA) Phase III
Early Restoration grant from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation
Commission to construct the floating dock as well as two new slips for transient
boats and replacement of the floating dock at the boat ramp. Construction of
the new docks cost $215,874.36 and took about four months to build.
Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1991, the Governor Stone is the
only known surviving Gulf coastal schooner of the thousands that served as
the major source of transportation and transport in the 19th and early 20th
centuries. The volunteer organization Friends of the Governor Stone, Inc. now
owns the vessel and its members sail her across the Northern Gulf Coast to
provide people an opportunity to step on board and back in time to a not so
distant but very different past.
The Governor Stone will be 141 years old on October 18, 2018.
As you are probably aware, our small coastal fishing community in Eastpoint
suffered huge losses due to wildfire that destroyed 3 dozen homes, vehicles,
boats and everything owned by the families that lived there. A huge
outpouring of supplies from all over have been arriving and we are so grateful
for the love & support show for our sister community. Right now, the biggest
need is financial to help rebuild.

Once again, the City of Carrabelle showed it knows how to celebrate the 4th
of July! Thank you to the Carrabelle CRA for another spectacular fireworks
display. The Carrabelle Chamber partnered with Paddle Jam and the First
United Methodist Church of Apalach this year for some pre-fireworks
festivities with all proceeds going to the Eastpoint Fire Victims Relief Fund.
Music, snow cones, and other items were available to purchase to help support
this important cause...believe 400-500 people stopped by, I'll have final figures
from accountant at a later date. The Paddle Jam group graciously offered to
set silent auction items up in Apalachicola at their Independence Eve
celebration to not only help raise more money with these generous donations,
but to make these Carrabelle businesses known to Apalach visitors. Thank you
also goes out to "Recharge" and all the volunteers that helped last night to
help make what I feel was a great success! As this was the first time our group
has done this type of event (and on such short notice), we'll definitely meet
and go over all the feedback for possibly doing this again next year, with more
activities added. Thank you all you Carrabelleans & Visitors.
Please also extend your thoughts and prayers to our former Carrabelle Mayor,
Mel Kelly on the passing of Thomas Erwin Kelly, Jr. who died on June 23, 2018.
He is survived by Mel, his cherished wife of 56 ½ years and their two beloved
children, Kimberly (Harold) Reijers and Thomas William.Extended family and
friends also mourn. No services are planned at this time. We also ask for
thoughts and prayers for former Carrabelle Chamber employee & volunteer,
Carol Zurawaka for her husband, Jack Zurawaka (former Carrabelle
pharmacist) as he recovers from a stroke.
