Course Objectives
The Professional Communications Program is a six-semester course that will equip students with advanced
written and spoken communication skills. The program focuses on preparing engineering students for the future.
Students will learn to speak and present with clarity; collaborate in teams; write effectively; have confident body
language along with a positive professional attitude. The syllabus of Professional Communication has been
designed to develop linguistic and communicative competencies of Engineering Students.

Professional Communication Program-I aims at accuracy of written and oral communication by helping
students sharpen their skills of grammar and vocabulary. It also focuses on email and texting etiquette so that
students can effectively communicate on paper and any digital platform. The course also tries to inculcate
creativity in the form of communication trough writing and composing various types of texts.
Syllabus Teaching Hours

Module 1 Grammar and Vocabulary: Pre-intermediate level- Adverbs and expression of 5


frequency: Present simple, Comparatives & Superlatives: Adjectives and adverbs,
Past Simple: Time expressions, Past continuous and past simple: Actions in
progress, temporary actions and situations, the background to a story, much/many,
lots/a lot of, a little/a few, Zero article, Verb patterns, going to and present
continuous: Plans, intentions and arrangements.
Use of Punctuations.
Module 2 a. Note Taking: Cornell System, Split Page format, List and outline format, 5
Mapping Method, Charting Method, Sentence Method,
Skills of Note taking: note making, Formatting and Structuring notes, Mind
mapping while reading, Focusing on ideas instead of sentences, Topicalizing,
Copying, Transcribing, Schematizing
b. Report/notes on Guest lectures.
Module 3 Creative Writing: Steps for Creative Writing, Prediction strategies, Pre and Post 5
writing activities, Dictogloss, reflection, previewing text content, Developmental
Reading.
Module 4 Letter Writing: Formal and Informal letters, Applications. 5
Texting: Writing effectively, contractions, word and sentence structure, greetings,
etiquettes of texting
Module 5 Email Writing: Structure and Format, Body of the mail, Headers, Signature, 5
Do’s and Don’ts, Punctuation, Email etiquette, Salutation, 7Cs of written
communication

4. Students will be able to compose compelling emails and texts using appropriate writing etiquette and rules of
grammar. (L6)

Question paper pattern:
i. Question paper shall have 5 main questions corresponding to 5 modules.
ii. Each main question will have two full questions carrying 10 marks each.
iii. A full question may have a maximum of two sub questions, covering
the topics under a module. The students will have to answer all 5
main questions, selecting one full question from each module.
