Details of Project Carried / Activities Done
Fund Raising Drive
Fund Raising for Sanitary Napkins
We were allotted a task of raising funds for sanitary napkins in the first
week. The objective of this activity was to create awareness and distribute
sanitary napkins. This campaign was started to help every underprivileged
girl / woman by giving them FREE eco-friendly sanitary napkins. In this
way one girl would be getting packet of napkins at least for 1 month. The
motive behind starting this campaign was to serve the needy girls and
females to make them friendly with the use of sanitary napkins who avoid
use of napkins due to high charges of it.

We used the creative image for giving information and asking funds for
sanitary napkins. The campaign was named "Happy Periods". The social
media sites that we adopted for the circulation of the information were
whatsapp, facebook, instagram etc. Many people gave positive response for
the great work we were doing. Our work was appreciated by our mentor
(Mr. Chinu) by saying that he received the highest funds for sanitary
napkins till date which was Rs. 14000 in first week.

Fund Raising for Blankets

Another task for the project was fund raising for blankets. This was a quite
difficult task for us as we were unable to ask for more help from the same
people who already contributed for "Happy Periods" campaign. Some
people gave their old blankets and sweaters, some gave money. Yet few of
us got successful in collecting funds. To raise funds we used our WhatsApp
status and put the poster there so that we could reach to maximum people.
The poster was named as “Happy Winters” which contained the details of
how the money if contributed will be used for distribution of blankets with
specified location and also the payment details.

Clean-up Drive

Beach clean-up at Dadar

The great initiative taken by Mr. Chinu and Mrs. Indu Mehta was
Dadar beach clean-up drive. From the initial of our project he had
conducted this activity at Dadar beach. On the first Sunday after our joining
it was 16th week of cleanliness drive and we for the first time involving in
such an activity which has one slogan “We need only two helping hands
for two hours”. As it was Sunday so it was possible for anyone to join us
for fun as well as contributing towards social cause of saving the beach.
Venue at Dadar-Varsova Beach, near 2nd gate of Kirti College Between
8am-11am. Mr. Chinu guided all of us regarding from where to start, and
how and where to dump the trash collected etc. He provided us all safety
needs and with full of energy and with all safety needed we commenced
working.
As we started collecting the trash we noticed it includes 80% of
plastic waste, clothes, flowers, full coconut, idol parts made up of POP, bio
medical waste, used sanitary napkins, alcohol bottles etc. We worked hard
continuously for 3 hours but yet it was the best experience we got and even
this made us realize that we human beings don’t bother about the waste and
throw it in canals, rivers, channels, and sometimes in the sea without having
a second thought of nature beauty and security. It is important to prevent
our water bodies because it ultimately throws out the trash again back on
the cost-line which if not cleared on time may create harmful disease. Later
we also received help from BMC and we carried out this activity altogether
and collected near about 80 tonnes of trash till 17th Week.
When we worked for first time that is on 10-12-217 it was extreme
low tide and so we were able to collect the trash going more inside the sea.
Also, the garbage was thrown outside the sea due to the recent hit of Ockhi
cyclone at Mumbai. The only positive thing about the cyclone was it had
made the sand loose and garbage was on the shore which helped us to clean
1km long patch inside the sea. An amazing and productive on Dadar beach
with 70+ volunteers and M.C.G.M staff who collected 8 tonnes of garbage.
Continuous service by M.C.G.M staff motivated our team to clean the vast
patch.
On 17th week that is on 17th December 2017 it was a sudden change
in the climate and there was a high tide at the seashore. Our target for the
day was to pick up 15 tonnes of trash. We found it difficult to collect the
trash from the water. Still somehow, we managed collecting the trash from
the water. We amongst us divided ourselves in teams and then some
students collected the garbage from beach and some collected from the
water as much as possible and dumped it in garbage truck. Later we also
got help from municipality as they send JCB for collecting the scattered
garbage. The municipality workers also co-ordinated with us and thanked
us for helping them collecting all garbage at the beach.
During the garbage collection, we also experienced how difficult it
is for few of the workers to collect tonnes of garbage every day. We worked
together and we got the best result when we saw the cleaned beach, it gave
us a great satisfaction of the hard work done.

In addition to this we created some success stories during our project such as:
1. Appreciation by M.C.G.M- G/North ward for beach clean-up and waste
management program
2. Appreciation and reorganization by NDTV and ZEE news channel,
news were displayed in Gujarat Samachar, Hindustan Times, Times of
India etc.
3. The activity is featured on Swachh Bharat Android Application
4. We are on one of the biggest online media platform

On 24th of December 2017 it was our last beach clean-up for the
project. On this day Mr. Chinu arranged snacks for us. We altogether had a
great experience which also brought us together co-ordinating with each
other and enjoying this activity of the project.

This is how we have done the beach cleaning and it was an amazing experience
I had. We really miss this moment in our life. After my completion of MBA, if
I will get some free time on Sundays then I would love to join them.

Waste management workshop

Waste management workshop was one of our task to do with
Aarna foundation. They told us to search slum area in our nearby area and
do a waste management workshop and make an awareness in people
mind.

On 22nd December 2017, all members gathered at one place and

from there we reached the destination. After reaching there we were
completely shocked by watching the clean roads and proper disposal of
household garbage in the dustbin we stood there for a while to watch if
more people do the same and to our surprise all the people there were
throwing garbage in the dustbin. So with curiosity we randomly asked a
lady about the change and she said there is no change in all the people
here also it seems so clear to you because just now the municipality
people collected the garbage from bin and now for some time people will
put the garbage in the bin and later again they will throw garbage outside
the bin or else in water.

So we decided to go inside the locality to make people aware about the

proper disposal of waste and the need to do so also to tell them to regularly
dispose the waste in proper manner.
To make people understand we made use of the charts and posters
prepared by us, made them realized the ill effects of improper disposal,
showed the pictures of beach clean-up done by us, requested them to keep
wet waste and dry waste separately, do proper disposal of electric gadgets,
not to throw the garbage in the water, make less use of plastics and if
possible reuse the plastic as possible and do not through the plastic in the
water.

Responses and problems:

1. All people don’t agree and put the garbage in the water
2. Fights and quarrels occurs if anyone stops them to dispose in the water
3. No coordination amongst the people
4. Municipality labours also collect garbage only from outside areas and
they don’t come in interior of the locality
5. People are unaware about the ill effects

After listening to them we requested them to start from themselves and not to
throw the garbage in improper way, because one step can also make a change.

Photos taken during explaining people about Waste Management

Photos taken during explaining people about Waste Management

After doing lot of communicating with some ladies we understood that

are doing their work properly and they are using the dustbin for the waste or
garbage.

Suddenly we went to back side of the slum area and we have found
something, which was unacceptable. There were a lake and it was fully
unhygienic water which was full of dirt. This is because of the industries
which are nearby the lake and all the garbage and chemical have been thrown
into water.
Ulhasnagar Lake

There were few houses near by the lake and we have asked to them
that what the hell this is and how they can staying nearby the lake. We have
also said them that have you ever complaint to the Municipal Authorities,
so they said yes but nobody comes and take this garbage. Then we have
explained them that if you guys don’t raise your voice for your benefit then
who will do it. They understood and we have also explained them to deal
with the garbage.
Collection & Distribution of Kind – Old
toys, newspaper, clothes
For the two days we have given the task to collect the kind i.e. old
toys, newspaper and clothes from the various peoples. And we have to
donate that kind to the underprivileged children’s and women’s and to the
various slums.

For this purpose we have created one pamphlet and we post it to the
various social networking sites, such as Whatsapp, Facebook, Instagram,
Twitter and make people aware about the kind donation. And we also
message the people about the kind donation. From that pamphlet we are
giving the information about the NGO and also the purpose of our kind
donation.

Along with this we also go to the people’s house and tell them about the
kind donation. And request them, for the kind donation.

The purpose behind this kind donation is that we saw at the time of
fund raising that the people are not easily ready and convince for the fund
donation. Because of some insecurity and trust issue. So we think that we
can tell people to donate their old clothes and old toys of their children
which are in good condition and we can donate it to the underprivileged
children’s and peoples. We also collect the old newspaper from the people
and sell it to raise funds to be used for the betterment of the underprivileged
children’s and peoples.

Submission of Collected clothes

Distribution:
On 21st December, 2017, we all members gathered at Thane centre
for clothes distribution. Mr. Chinu divided us in several groups of minimum
8 members for each area and all the clothes were properly segregated by
our other group members it means adults clothes in one group, teenagers in
one group and infants in one group as per the age and gender so it will be
easier for the people to select the clothes.

As we went to that area people gathered around us after watching

the poster of the NGO and the boxes in our hands. We told that we have
brought good clothes for you at free of cost. In no time we got positive
responses from the people there.

All the kids were so happy to see the clothes small children were
literally dancing after they got clothes of their choice. Some of them came
along with their parents and others came alone and selected as many clothes
they wanted.

The response we got for this activity is very amazing and good as
compare to fund raise. People are easily ready for donating their old toys,
clothes and newspaper. I personally collect around 3 boxes of clothes. We
got calls from lots of people for kind donation. It was really amazing to see
such a tremendous response from the people. Everyone is very much
excited and happy for these donation, some were ready to give such
donation in future as well.

After this distribution, we saw the lots of happiness on peoples face. We

are also very much happy and satisfied after seeing the happiness of that people.

School Kids Welfare Drive
School survey and visit in Ambarnath
We conducted a survey nearing area in Ambarnath to seek
information regarding school which accommodates students from
underprivileged areas or students coming from economically backward
region. Resulting to which we came across a school in Ambarnath east near
Heramb Temple named as Gokhale Rahalankar Vidyalaya. There we all
members gathered and seek the required information about the school to see
if the school is eligible to get adopted and later in a meeting with our mentor
we decided to adopt the school.

On 13-12-2017 we finally adopted the school with a promise of

providing all required stationary to the students along with providing
sanitary napkins to the girl students there. We conducted certain activities
in the school after adoption like Drawing competition, workshop for waste
management during our project. This was the 2nd successful school adoption

Unhygienic urinals
Visit at TMC School
On 8-12-2017 we visited TMC School in Thane. It's a Municipality
school located in interior of Thane in Waghbil village. Though the school
was in interior but we had alot of fun in the school after meeting the children
there. The children were also very much excited to see all of us. When we
entered in the classroom the children’s greeted us with a warm welcome
and interacted with us by themselves. We took number of activities which
include number tables, months of the year in Marathi and English, dancing,
Singing, games, clicked as many selfies and then left the school in the
evening. Some of them told us to visit again, some of them came with us
till bus stand and some gave flowers. The smile on their face made our day
more relaxing and happy.

School Adoption at Ambarnath

School Adoption at Ambarnath was an addition to the activity by AARNA

foundation. We were initially divided into two groups by our mentor, where
one group carried out activities in Mumbai and another group was asked to
conduct activities in Suburbs (Ambarnath).
We group of 13 members were told to do survey in Ambarnath to search
an underprivileged school having students coming from poor families. After
a short survey we got a school in Ambarnath east near Heramb temple
named as Gokhale Rahalankar Vidyalaya. We as a group we went there and
conducted a meeting on 712-2017 to get all required information of the
school whether it is eligible to get adopted by the NGO. With respect to first
proceeding we gathered all required mandatory information about the
school and whilst 3rdproceeding along with Mar.
Chinu we legally adopted the school on 13th December 2017.
According to AARNA Foundation adoption policy includes:

Drawing competition at Gokhale Vidyalaya
Ambarnath for : Primary & Secondary
Students
After adoption the first activity we conducted was drawing competition for
students of both primary and secondary section separately.
All the required essential resources utilized by students for drawing competition
were provided by our NGO.
On 15th Dec 2017, we reported school with resources for conducting
drawing competition. With the prior permission from the headmistress Mrs.
Tandule we were given the slot between school hours. The topic for the
competition was “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan". Only for the students of 1st
standard we decided to give printed drawings for colouring, rest of the
students made beautiful drawing based on their imagination. Some of the
pictures where having imagination but colouring were not done and due to
which unfortunately we were unable to select that picture for prize. But yet
all the students whole heartedly participated in the competition and enjoyed
a lot.
We gave 1.5 hours for the competition and then remaining half an hour was
utilized for short listing the best drawing. Later we declared three winning
prizes per class. For the winners, we decided to give prizes of one drawing
book and a crayon box for the primary section and a pen and register for the
secondary section. We initially contributed for the prize and later Mr. Chinu
reimbursed the amount to us.
After these another activity, we conducted with this school was Christmas
celebration on 23rd December 2017. The party was organised well in
advance by all. We had also taken officially permission from the principal.
As it was for the first time we decided to organize the party only for primary
section. As per our budget the snacks decided was a cake slice, cold drink,
chocolate and samosa. Along with these school by themselves arranged
little snacks from their side. We also had a surprised of secret Santa for the
students there. All our members contributed for the party and we got rs.1000

On the evening of Christmas, we decided to celebrate Christmas at

fixed the date to do advance celebration in the school on 23 rd December
2017. For snacks, we decided to give samosa and slice cake with cold drinks
along with chocolates. We also arranged small DJ party for the kids, before
that we played "Antakshari" and "Pass Pass" game along with teachers
also some students performed solo dance, group dance, singing.

We all enjoyed with kids a lot and later we had snacks, clicked pictures

Coincidently, on the same day two students have birthdays. Along
with principal madam we all celebrated the birthday by cutting cake. They
were so happy as we were present with them for celebration. After finishing
the party, students were gotten so attached to us that they were not allowing
us to leave from the school. They were asking again and again for coming
back to school for visit each Sunday and also they were also asking to take
as many clicks in our phone for memories. As it was the last day, we also
halted in the school for long time and finally the students came up to bus
stop for see off us. We had a great fun on that day celebrating the Christmas
Party.

Challenges Faced by NGO
Challenges faced:

• During the beach cleanup there were people who were throwing
garbage in the sea water.

• The Worli Village people were also throwing their garbage in the sea
water.

• It was difficult to raise the fund for the NGO, so they could help
more.

How challenges overcome:

➢ We and the other volunteers stopped the people from throwing the
garbage.

➢ Aarna foundation Mentor had a talk with BMC to clean up the place
and take the garbage from the Worli Village on regular basis.

➢ Then BMC start keeping few dustbins on the beach and people were
throwing the garbage into that dustbin
Suggestions and Limitations

Some suggestions from my side to the NGO would be as

follows:

• The NGO needs to look into the TMC School that we were sent into
more seriously as what I found was that the teachers and staff were very
much negligent about the students.

• There must be some more training given to the volunteers for teaching
in the school.

• Some more activities like sports should be added to the school

activity.

• The Worli Village people should also need to participate in the Dadar
Beach Cleanup so that they understand how their garbage gets
accumulated at the beach.

• More activities like street play should be organized for waste

management awareness.

Some of the Limitations of the NGO were as follows:

• We did not know what to teach the students of the school.

• The school adopted under the NGO, there wasn’t any teaching
facilities.
• There is a need for more training that should be given to the
volunteers.

Learning / Experience

There were a lot of things that I learnt from the entire project,

• Learnt how to think about others and give whatever we can for the
betterment of the society.

• Become connected to the nature and surroundings.

• Avoid the use of plastic

• I even learnt how to control and connect with kids of the school

• This project made me realize that thinking about oneself is easy but
thinking about others is more satisfying, that’s what I got from the smiles
of those children.

• My overall experience was really amazing and had a long-lasting

impact on me.

• I have given my best towards the project that I have completed for 21
days. That was not just 21 days but it mean a lot to me. I was used with
the society and I was feeling that I’m doing the great thing and it feel me
so happy.
