ELECTROMAGNETIC RADIATION PROJECT

TASK DESCRIPTION:

You will be assigned one of the forms of electromagnetic radiation. Working with a partner, prepare a poster
and a short presentation about the radiation type.

SELECTED RECOMMENDED SOURCES:

http://www.windows.ucar.edu/tour/link=/physical_science/magnetism/em_radiation.html&edu=high
http://imagine.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/science/know_l2/emspectrum.html
http://science.hq.nasa.gov/kids/imagers/ems/index.html
http://www.lbl.gov/MicroWorlds/ALSTool/EMSpec/EMSpec2.html

POSTER MUST INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION:

1. Name of radiation
2. Main characteristics of the radiation (such as range of wavelengths, range of frequencies and energy of
radiation).
3. Details about discovery of this type of radiation (names of scientists involved and dates).
4. Main uses of this type of radiation (at least three uses, with explanation for each). Uses should be
illustrated on the poster.
5. Determine if this type of radiation is harmful to the environment and to humans. Provide reasons why is it
harmful. Determine how effective Earth's atmosphere is at shielding use from this radiation. Can any
material block this radiation completely? Explain how can humans protect themselves from this type of
radiation.
NOTE: If your topic is visible light, in this section you will explain how different colors of visible light
are obtained from white light. Also, explain how people are able to see colors.
6. References should be provided on the back of the poster. References should be in MLA format and must
include at least one non-electronic source.
7. Remember to paraphrase when preparing your poster. Rules regarding plagiarism apply!
PRESENTATION REQUIREMENTS:
1. Both partners must be involved in presenting the information.
2. You cannot read from the poster or from printouts. You can, however, have index cards with handwritten
notes.
3. You must be prepared to explain and define all terms used on the poster.
