Student Exploration: 2D Eclipse

Vocabulary: corona, eclipse, lunar eclipse, penumbra, solar eclipse, umbra

Gizmo Warm-up
● An eclipse occurs when the shadow of one celestial body falls on
another celestial body.

● The 2D Eclipse Gizmo™ allows you to explore two types of eclipses: a
lunar eclipse and a solar eclipse.

● Notice that the objects in the Gizmo are not drawn to scale. If they
were, the Sun would be located over 150 meters to the left and would
be over a meter tall!

1. Next to Views, select Both shadows. Why do the Moon and Earth have shadows?

_________________________________________________________________________

_________________________________________________________________________

2. Notice there are two parts to each shadow. The darkest part is the umbra. The lighter part surrounding the umbra
is the penumbra. Highlight or circle the correct phrase in the parentheses to finish the sentence.

A. How much of the Sun would you see if you were standing in the umbra? You would see (none of the sun
/ part of the sun).

B. How much of the Sun would you see if you were standing in the penumbra? You would see (none of the
sun / part of the sun).
Activity A: Get the Gizmo ready:
SOLAR ECLIPSE ● Select Moon shadow.

Question: What causes a solar eclipse?

Predict: During a solar eclipse, our view of the Sun is blocked by the Moon.
● Your task:
o In the diagram, draw where you think the Moon is located when the observer on the left side of
Earth is experiencing a solar eclipse.

____________________________________________________________________________

Observe: Move the Moon slowly around Earth in a counterclockwise direction. As you do this, pay attention to the
Moon’s shadow and the Sun view in the bottom right corner.
● Your task:
o Answer the following questions:

2A. As the Moon’s shadow crosses Earth’s surface, an observer sees……

a) The moon blocking the sun.
b) The Earth blocking the sun.
c) Nothing blocking the sun

2B. The sun is ________ when the umbra crosses the point where the observer is located.
a) Completely blocked
b) Partially blocked
c) Not blocked
________________________________________________________________________

Record: Position the Moon so that the Sun is completely blocked.

● Your task:
o Draw the Moon, the Moon’s umbra, and the Moon’s penumbra in the image below. This is a total
solar eclipse.

Record: Position the Moon so that the Sun is partially blocked.

● Your task:
o Draw the Moon, the Moon’s umbra, and the Moon’s penumbra in the image. This is a partial solar
eclipse.

Analyze: Slowly move the Moon forward and back in its orbit. As you do this, look at the Moon view and the Sun
view.
● Your task:
o Answer the following questions

i. What do you see around the Sun during a total solar eclipse? __________________

___________________________________________________________________

This fuzzy “cloud” is a part of the Sun’s atmosphere called the corona. It is only visible from Earth during a
total solar eclipse.

ii. What is the phase of the Moon during a solar eclipse? (Circle the phase below.)

Activity B:
● Click Reset.
LUNAR ECLIPSE
● Select E arth shadow.

Question: What causes a lunar eclipse?

Predict: During a lunar eclipse, the Moon is darkened by Earth’s shadow.
● Your Task:
o In the diagram, draw where you think the Moon is located when the observer can see a lunar eclipse.

____________________________________________________________________________________________
Observe: Move the Moon slowly around Earth in a counterclockwise direction. As you do this, pay attention to Earth’s
shadow and the Moon view above.
● Your task:
o Circle or Highlight the correct word in the parentheses to complete the sentence.

As the Moon enters Earth’s penumbra, it becomes slightly ( darker / lighter ). As the Moon enters Earth’s umbra, it
becomes completely (dark / bright).

______________________________________________________________________________________
Record: Position the Moon so that it is in Earth’s penumbra.
● Your Task:
o Draw Earth’s umbra, Earth’s penumbra, and the Moon. This is a penumbral lunar eclipse.

________________________________________________________________________________________
Record: Position the Moon so that it is partially in Earth’s umbra.
● Your task:
o In the left diagram, draw Earth’s umbra, Earth’s penumbra, and the Moon.
▪ This is a partial lunar eclipse.
o In the right diagram position the Moon so that it is completely in Earth’s umbra. Draw Earth’s umbra,
Earth’s penumbra, and the Moon.
▪ This is a total lunar eclipse.

__________________________________________________________________________________________
Analyze: What is the phase of the Moon during a lunar eclipse? (Hint: Imagine what the Moon would look like
if it were not in Earth’s shadow.)
● Your Task:
o Answer the question above and circle your answer.

______________________________________________________________________________________________

Compare: How is a lunar eclipse similar to a solar eclipse? How are they different?
● Your task:
o Read the statements. On the line, write Solar, Lunar, or Both. You will use one word twice.

______The eclipse is named after the object that is blocked from sight.

______ The eclipse involves the shadow of one celestial body falling across the surface of another.

______During this eclipse the Moon literally blocks the Sun from being seen.

______This eclipse occurs when the Moon becomes dark as it passes into Earth’s shadow.
