 Foreword

In their publication, “A Krause Genealogy,” the authors, Margaret Hewitt George and Wilmer
Krause Yerk, list the marriage of Jacob Krause to Christina Deringer, the daughter of Henry and
Christina Deringer. Christina’s brother, Henry, was a gunsmith and his son, Henry Jr. was a
forearm inventor and manufacturer.
As I read of the author’s account of Henry Deringer, Jr., I learned that he was the inventor of the
pistol known as the “derringer,” a small percussion-cap pistol. It was of superior design and
finish, marked “Deringer Phila.” The derringer was made in large quantities between the 1840s
and the Civil War. Note that the pistol’s name as an extra “r” that was inserted in error by a
newspaper reporter.
These little pistols figure, usually by name, in the pre-Civil War romances as the standard
weapons of the ubiquitous dark and sinister gambler. One of them was used by John Wilkes
Booth to shoot President Abraham Lincoln. The Deringer armory went out of existence soon
after Henry Deringer’s death in Philadelphia in 1868. *
My connection to the Deringer family is through the marriage of Jacob Krause and Christina
Deringer. Jacob is the 2nd great-grandfather of Sally R; Krause, wife of Henry Huber Boyer, the
half 1st cousin twice removed to me, Richard Gretzinger. The connection is not a blood
connection.
The Deringer Genealogy begins with Heinrich Deringer born about 1710 in Germany. He is
listed in Chapter 1 as entry number 1. His descendants that I have identified are included in a
descendant’s report beginning on page 16.

Generation 1 and 2

1. Heinrich (Henry) Deringer was born in Germany about 1710 in the region of central Germany
known as Thuringia. This area was inhabited by a Germanic tribe, Thuringii, who were first mentioned
around the year 400. It was the largest state in the region and persisted to the year 1247. Afterwards
the state known as Thuringia ceased to exist; nevertheless, the term continued to be used to describe the
region. The name Deringer stems from the High German "Thuringer," which means "native of
Thuringia.”
After the 1485 Treaty of Leipzig, Thuringia had its own dynasty again. It became the present day Free
State of Thuringia in 1920. The capital of Thuringia is Erfurt, located about 190 miles southwest of
Berlin.

The coat of arms of Thuringia shows the lion of the Ludowingians* of 12th-century origin. The coat of
arms today includes eight stars around the lion to represent the eight former states which formed
Thuringia. The flag of Thuringia is a white-red bicolor, derived from the white and red stripes of the
Ludowingian lion. The coat of arms and flag of Hesse are quite similar to the Thuringian ones, because
they are also derived from the Ludowingian symbols.

progenitor was Louis the Bearded who was descended from a noble family whose genealogy cannot be precisely
determined (Source: Wikipedia).

Henry and his wife Christina (maiden name unknown) had at least two children, Christina born 10
August 1742 and Henry, Sr. born on 1 January 1756. Both were born in Germany in the Thuringia
area. Sometime before the American revolution, Heinrich and his family immigrated to America.

It is not known when Heinrich and his wife, Christina, died or where they are buried.

Generation 2

2. Christina Deringer was born in Germany on 10 August 1742. After arriving in America, she
married Jacob Krause*, also spelled Krauss. Jacob was born on 5 September 1733 and was confirmed
in the Falkner Swamp Church in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.

About 1763, Jacob and Christina married. They had nine children, six daughters and three sons, born
between 1764 and 1792. Two sons, Henry and Jacob, married Zollers (also spelled Zeller). Henry
married Margaret and Jacob Elizabeth. According to the Krause Genealogy, Sophia 's parents were
Christian and Margaret Zoller. I believe Christian and Margaret are also the parents of Elizabeth.

Two daughters, Christina and Catherine married Brants. Christina married Jacob and Catherine
married Samuel. I believe Jacob Brant and Samuel Brant are brothers. Two other daughters, Mary and
Elizabeth married Wolfes. Mary married Christian and Elizabeth married George. I believe Christian
Wolfe and George Wolfe are brothers.

During the Revolutionary War, Jacob served under Captain John Massimo, 4th Battalion of the
Philadelphia Militia. In 1781, he was listed as a tax collector for LimericTownship.

Jacob died on 18 February 1820 at the age of 87 years. Three years later, his wife died on 20 August
1823. Christina was 81. Both are buried at Limerick, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.

3. Henry Deringer, Sr. was born 1 January 1756 in Thuringia, Germany. As noted earlier, Henry’s
parents with his siblings immigrated to America before the American Revolution. Henry Sr. was a
gunsmith who had his business in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Flintlock and percussion-cap arms of all
types were manufactured there. Deringer's workshop produced several types of the highly regarded
Kentucky rifles and Kentucky pistols using the flintlock action. He also produced United States
military pistols, particularly the 1808 flintlock model.

About 1779, Henry Sr. married Catherine McQuety. She was born in January 1760. Catherine had
eight children born between 1780 and 1794, four sons (John, Philip, Henry Jr.,and Joseph) and and four
daughters (Eve, Elizabeth, Mary and Catharine).

When his son, Henry Jr., reached working age, he was apprenticed to a gunsmith in Richmond,
Virginia. After serving his apprenticeship, he returned to Philadelphia in 1806 and joined his father in
the gun making business. Henry Sr. continued to develop the rifle, notably narrowing the stock, adding
a more crescent shaped butt-plate, and decorating with more inlay work than on previous models. He
supplied an army version of these weapons to the government under contract.

Henry Sr. retired from the business in 1814 at age 58.

In November 1829, Henry’s wife, Catherine, died at the age of 69 years. Four years later Henry Sr.
died at age 77 on 28 December 1833 in Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. He is buried at
the German Reformed Graveyard*, Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. I presume his wife,
Catherine, was also buried there.

* The German Reformed Graveyard was cleared to make way for the Easton Area Public Library (constructed in
1901-1902). Most of the graves were relocated to the Easton German Reformed Church Cemetery, but a few
remain.

16. Henry Deringer, Jr. was born on 26 October 1766 in Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania.
When he was of working age, his father sent him to Richmond, Virginia to apprentice as a gunsmith.
He returned in 1806 and worked in his father’s gun making business.

On 5 April 1810, Henry married Elizabeth Hollowbush at the First Reformed Church in Philadelphia.
Henry settled in Philadelphia and began his own arms-manufacturing plant in Philadelphia on
Tamarind Street*. He won contracts to supply various types of guns to the United States government.
His early percussion-cap pistols were long-barreled weapons that were designed to fit a belt. After 1825
he concentrated on making single-shot pistols. His small caplock pocket pistol became his most famous
product.

This pistol was easy to handle and accurate at short ranges. It was less than six inches long and was
bored in calibres from .36 to .45, with .41 being the most common. This model was copied by many
other manufacturers and was quite popular between the 1840s and the American Civil War. It was
manufactured and sold into the late 20th century by Colt and others, often in .2 caliberre, and
sometimes gold-plated.

John Wilkes Booth used a Deringer pocket pistol to assassinate President Abraham Lincoln. A reporter
assembling the details called the gun a “Derringer” pistol in his story, adding an extra “r.” This
incorrect spelling was widely repeated, and the pistol became known as the derringer.

Henry and Elizabeth had five children, three males (Theophilus, Bronaugh, and Calhoun) and two
females (Eliza and Victorine). They were born between 1811 and 1831.

According to McElroy's 841 Directory**, Henry Deringer had a house/gun shop at 370 North Front
Street ***, Northern Liberties, Pennsylvania, PA. The directory listed Henry as a Director to the
Manufactures and Mechanics, Beneficial Savings Institution (see page 8).

He died 27 years later on 28 February 1868 in Philadelphia. He was 82 years of age. Henry’s wife,
Elizabeth, died a year earlier on 26 January 1867. She was 71. Both are buried at Laurel Hill
Cemetery in Philadelphia in the Shrubbery Section, Lot 10-14.

28. Theophilus T. Deringer was born on 17 February 1811 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He married
Miss Mariner (given name unknown) about 1840. She gave birth to a daughter, Amanda, on 17 March
1841. About 1844, Theophilus married Catharine Dove. She was born 4 July 1809 in Philadelphia.
She had a daughter, Katharine, born on 15 February 1845 in Philadelphia.

The 1841 Business Directory (see page 7) listed “T. T. Derringer, gunsmith, 8 Coates.” At that time,
Coates Street ran from the Delaware River to Old York Road. In 1852, the Philadelphia City Council
renamed many of the streets in Northern Liberties. Coates Street became Fairmont Avenue.

In the 1850, 1860, and 1870 U.S. Censuses, Theophilus and Catherine lived in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania. In 1850 Theophilus was recorded as a "clerk," in 1860 he was a "gentleman," and in
1870 he was a printer.

At the time of his death at the age of 63 on 14 February 1874, he resided at 2007 Green Street in
Philadelphia. He is buried at Laurel Hill Cemetery, Section T, Plot 208 & 209.

In the 1880 U.S. Census, the widowed Catharine was living alone at 2007 Green Street in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania. The census says that her father was born in France and her mother was born in
Pennsylvania. Catharine died on 26 August 1886 in Atlantic City, NJ. She was 77 years of age. She is
also buried at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia.

29. Bronaugh McCain Deringer was born in Philadelphia in 1819. At the age of 28, he married
Estalena McLean Woodland on 14 December 1848. She was born on 5 January 1830 in Delaware,
making her 18 when she married Bronaugh.

Bronaugh was a "coal merchant" in Washington, DC, from 1840-47. In 1848, he bought a large farm
near New Castle, Delaware. In the 1860 U.S. Census, Bronaugh lived in New Castle, Delaware and
was recorded as a “framer.”

Bronaugh and Estalena had eight children: Rosalie, Bronaugh, Florence, Estalena Woodland, Eliza,
Henry Clay, Mary Nivin, and Woodland.

Bronaugh died of typhoid fever on 11 August 1866 at the age of 47. He is buried at Laurel Hill
Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

In the 1870 and 1880 U.S. Census, the widowed Estalena lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In the
1900 U.S. Census, she was living in the 9th District of Baltimore, Maryland, with her widowed
daughter, Mary. Estalena's son, Henry Clay Deringer, was living in Kent County, Maryland, in 1900,
so possibly she was living with him at the time of her death.

Estalena died on 14 June 1903 and is buried at Laurel Hill Cemetery. She was 73 years of age.

30. Calhoun Mason Deringer was born on 8 November 1824 in Philadelphia. Like his brother,
Bronaugh, Calhoun was a “coal merchant” in Washington, DC. He began this endeavor in 1844 and
retired in 1847 to Philadelphia where he spent the remainder of his life.

He married Martha A. Bladen, born in 1831.She had a daughter, Blanche D, who was born in
Philadelphia in 1870. The Find A Grave website recorded that Calhoun also had a son, Henry
Deringer, born 16 March 1849 and died 20 December 1915, who married Mary Elizabeth Black. I
have not been able to confirm that this Henry is a son of Calhoun Deringer. This Henry and his wife,
Mary Elizabeth, are buried at Laurel Hill Cemetery, Section Z Lot 395. Calhoun Deringer is buried in
the Section Shrubbery with his parents.

Calhoun was the Grand Marshal of the Masonic body at the laying of the corner-stone of the
Smithsonian Institute on 1 May 1847. In 1851 and again in 1861, he was Secretary of the Board of the
Guardians of the Poor, Philadelphia. In 1855, Calhoun served as Secretary of the Board of Port
Wardens; Aide to Governors. Bigler and Pollack. *

Calhoun was elected Lt. Col., 1st Regiment, 2d Brigade, Pa Vol., but was not in service. In 1867, he
was the Internal Revenue Assessor of the 2d District of Pennsylvania. *

LTC Calhoun died on 29 January 1907 at the age of 83 years. He is buried at Laurel hill Cemetery,
Philadelphia, in the same Section (Shrubbery) as his parents.

Children of Calhoun Deringer and Martha Blanden

31. Elizabeth Deringer was born in January 1827 in Pennsylvania. She married Jonathan Clark about
1857. Jonathan was previously married to a Beach whose mother was Margaretta Beach born about
1792 in Pennsylvania. Jonathan and his first wife had two sons, Beach Clark born about 1840 and
Isaac Jones Clark born May1843 in Pennsylvania.
About 1851, Jonathan married Elizabeth Deringer. The 1900 Census for Lower Merion Township,
Montgomery County, Pennsylvania reported that Elizabeth, widowed, had four children, three were
living. The living children were Esther Clark born about 1852, Eva E. Clark born April 1857 and Eliza
Clark born about 1858-59. Above Elizabeth’s name on her tombstone is the name Estalena D. Clark,
died December 1874 at age 20 years. I believe Estalena is the deceased daughter of Elizabeth.
One of Elizabeth’s daughters, Eva E. Clark, married Mr. Jones (given name unknown). Eva had a
daughter, Louise C. Jones, born about 1875
Elizabeth died on 18 February 1907 at the age of 76 years. She is buried at Laurel Hill Cemetery,
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her husband, Jonathan, died before 1870. His burial location is not
known.

32. Victorine Virginia Deringer was born on 3 October 1831 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She
married Henry S. Gross who was born in New Berlin, Union County, Pennsylvania in 1812. Victorine
and Henry had one child.
Henry was a well-known pioneer coal operator having been in the business forty years. In late 1889, he
was suffering from congestion of the lungs. He passed away on 16 January 1890 in Philadelphia at the
age of 78 years. His wife died seven years later on 1 January 1897. She was 66. Both Henry and
Victorine are buried at Laurel Hill Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Child of Theophilus T. Deringer and Miss Marine

44. Amanda M. Deringer was born on 17 March 1841. At age 23, she married Theodore C. Uhler on
9 February 1864 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was born in 1839 in Pennsylvania

The 1850 Census for Northern Liberties, Philadelphia Ward 5 recorded Theodore’s parents, John and
Mary Uhler, and his siblings, Mary Uhler age 38, Elizabeth Uhler age 28, Francis Uhler age 26, George
Uhler age 24, Nickolas Uhler age 23.

The 1860 Census for Philadelphia, Ward 11, listed the six Uhler children. The parents, John and Mary
Uhler, were not listed implying they may have died between 1850 and 1860.

The last two entries in the 1860 Census Uhler household were two females born in Ireland, Catherine
Owens age 24 and Mary Owens age 22. Catherine and Mary were probably hired housekeepers.

Amanda Deringer and Theodore Uhler had two children, Theodore D. born on 6 November 1864 and
Clara May born in 1866. Theodore’s occupation was “merchant.”

Amanda’s husband, Theodore, died on 16 March 1887 at the age of 48. The address recorded on his
death certificate was 1009 Brown Street, Philadelphia Ward 15. Amanda died 33 years after her
husband on 12 March 1920. She was 79 years of age. Both Amanda and Theodore are buried at Laurel
Hill Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Child of Theophilus T. Deringer and Catharine Dove

45. Katharine F. Deringer was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 15 February 1845. She married
a Mr. Field (given name unknown). Katharine died at the age of 67 years and is buried at Laurel Hill
Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
I was unable to find any additional information concerning Katharine’s husband, Mr. Field.

Children of Calhoun Deringer and Martha Blanden
54. Henry Derringer was born on 16 March 1849. The Find A Grave website lists him as a son of
Calhoun and Martha. I have not, however, been able to confirm that Henry is a son of Calhoun and
Martha.
According to the website, he married Mary Elizabeth Black who was born in Missouri in 1853. She
died in Philadelphia on 24 April 1909 at the age of 56. She is buried at Laurel Hill Cemetery in
Philadelphia.
Henry died six years after Mary on 20 December 1915. He was 66 years old and was also buried at
Laurel Hill Cemetery.
55. Blanche Deringer was born about 1850 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She married John Henry
Ehlen who was born in Maryland on 3 October 1845. In the 1870 Census for Baltimore, John was
single living with his parents, John F. and Margreth A. Ehlen. In the Baltimore 1880 Census, John was
living with his wife, Blanche D., in his parent’s household. Thus, John and Blanche were married
between 1870 and 1880.
John was an auditor for the Adams Express Company. Chapter 6,” History of the Adams Express
Company,” outlines the company founded by Alvin Adams in 1839 and highlights the part the
company played in the Civil War and the building up of the Pinkerton Detective Agency.
Henry died on 16 November 1883 in Baltimore, Maryland. He was 38 years of age. I believe he is
buried in Baltimore, Maryland. The 1920 Census for Philadelphia, Ward 8 listed a Mrs. B. D. Ehlen,
age 50 born in Pennsylvania as the household “Head.” It also recorded that she was “Married.” Living
in the same household was Mrs. Deringer, age 45 born in Pennsylvania. I believe the listed Mrs. B. D.
Ehlen is Mrs. Blanche (Deringer) Ehlen born about 1850 who married John Henry Ehlen. If true, after
John Henry’s death in 1883, Blanche moved back to Philadelphia sometime before 1920.
Blanche lived another 45 years and died on 23 November 1928 at the age of 78.

History of the Adams Express Company

In 1839, Alvin Adams, a produce merchant ruined by the Panic of 1837, began carrying letters,
small packages and valuables for patrons between Boston and Worcester, Massachusetts. He had
at first a partner named Burke, who soon withdrew, and as Adams & Company, Adams rapidly
extended his territory to New York City, Philadelphia and other eastern cities. By 1847, he had
penetrated deeply into the South, and by 1850 he was shipping by rail and stagecoach to St.
Louis.

Adams Express was used by abolitionist groups in the 1840s to deliver anti-slavery newspapers
from northern publishers to southern states. In 1849, a Richmond, Virginia slave named Henry
“Box” Brown shipped himself north to Philadelphia and freedom via Adams Express.

In 1855, the company was reorganized as the Adams Express Company. Meanwhile, a
subsidiary concern, Adams & Company of California, had been organized in 1850 and spread its
service all over the Pacific Coast under the management of Isaiah C. Woods. Not being under
Adams' personal management, Woods badly handled it, and it failed on February 23, 1855.

The South was almost entirely covered by the Adams Express service in 1861, when the
American Civil War necessitated the splitting off of another company under Henry B. Plant,
which, for political reasons, was given the name of Southern Express. There was a mysterious
kinship between the two ever afterward, having joint offices at common points. Southern stock
was never quoted in the market, and it was even charged by some Adams stockholders that
Southern was secretly owned by Adams. The current official history of Adams, written in 2004,
acknowledges that Southern was its subsidiary.
The parent company held a strong position from New England and the mid-Atlantic coast to the
far Western plains. Its stock holdings were enormous. In 1910, it was the second largest
stockholder in the Pennsylvania Railroad and the third largest in the New York, New Haven &
Hartford Railroad, besides owning large blocks of American Express, Norfolk & Western
Railroad and other shares.
The company's antebellum employment of Allan Pinkerton to solve its robbery problems was a
large factor in building up the noted Pinkerton National Detective Agency. Along with the other
expresses, its shipping interests were merged by the government into the American Railway
Express Company, which later became the Railway Express Agency.

Adams Express continued its corporate existence as a wealthy investment trust. It has been a
Closed-end fund (NYSE: ADX) since 1929 an dis located in Baltimore, Maryland, Effective
March 31, 2015, the company changed its name to Adams Diversified Equity Fund in
recognition of the fact that its express activities had long ended.
