Support Your Local Humane Society, Not National

L
et’s assume you love cats and/or dogs.
And you see an ad for The Humane
Society of the United States (HSUS),
on television or on the Internet (RCReader.
com/y/hsus1). Do you get emotional over
the sight of stray cats or dogs living in
Dickensian squalor before being eutha-
nized? And do you consider writing out a
check to the national organization based on
the work it does on behalf of those animals,
consistently depicted in rescue shelters?
It’s an impulse you may want to
reconsider.
A very small percentage of the HSUS’s
funds support local animal shelters.
HumaneWatch, the Society’s fiercest critic,
has, over the years, placed numbers at
1 percent (RCReader.com/y/hsus2) and
lower. HSUS, for its part, denies making
false claims (RCReader.com/y/hsus3) in
order to play on donor confusion for its
own enrichment (while causing shelters
who share the name “Humane Society” to
consider a change).

Rauner or Madigan: Who’s Less Popular?
I
llinois House Speaker Michael Madigan will
be on the ballot in just one of Illinois’ 118
House districts this November, but his name
and reputation will be featured in electoral
battles throughout the state as Governor Bruce
Rauner and the Republican Party use Madigan
against every Democrat from JB Pritzker on
down to maybe even mosquito-abatement
district races. Can his lousy statewide image be
used to defeat his fellow Democrats?
On the surface anyway, Madigan is less
popular in Democratic Illinois than are
unpopular Republicans Rauner and President
Donald Trump. Sixty percent of Illinoisans
polled in a recent Capitol Fax/We Ask America
survey said they had an unfavorable view of
Madigan, compared to 56 percent for Trump
and 55 percent for Governor Rauner.
They’re all doing pretty poorly, but Trump
“wins” this category if you look at people
with “very unfavorable” opinions. Forty-nine
percent of 600 likely Illinois voters who were
polled June 9-11 hold a very unfavorable view
of the president, while 46 say they have a very
unfavorable opinion of the speaker and 39
percent say it about the Republican governor. In
contrast, 27 percent say that about JB Pritzker.
The poll’s margin of error was plus-or-minus
3.99 percent.
Overall, the poll found that Pritzker led
Governor Rauner by nine points, 36-27, with
26 percent choosing an unnamed third-party
candidate and 11 percent undecided.
Just 31 percent of Democrats have a favorable
view of Speaker Madigan, while 41 percent of
Democrats have an unfavorable view, according
to the poll. And lots of folks within what’s
considered the “base” of the Democratic Party’s
statewide strength don’t like Speaker Madigan,
either. African-Americans are split 43-43.
Women turn thumbs down 27-56 favorable/
unfavorable, as do Chicagoans (30-58),
suburban Cook County residents (34-53), and
labor-union households (36-54).
Governor Rauner has his own troubles
with his party’s base. The only important
GOP demographic he’s not underwater with
outside of self-declared Republicans is senior
citizens, and they just barely tolerate him.
The Democrats are sure to use Rauner’s name
and reputation against Republican candidates
throughout the state.
So my pollster came up with a question to
try to see who was more popular (or unpopular,
as the case may be) with voters in actual down-
ballot races: “If the election for state legislator
were being held today, are you more likely to
vote for a candidate supported by Bruce Rauner,
or a candidate supported by Michael Madigan?”
Forty-one percent said they’d be more likely
to vote for a candidate backed by Rauner,
while 32 percent said the same about Madigan.
Another 27 percent said it wouldn’t make any
difference either way.
While majorities or pluralities of Democratic
base elements chose Madigan, significant
minorities chose Rauner. For instance, 11
percent of Democrats chose a legislative
candidate backed by Rauner, compared to 59
percent for Madigan (among Republicans,
those numbers were 6 percent Madigan and 79
percent Rauner).
Among African-Americans, a significant
23 percent would choose a Rauner-backed
candidate and 54 percent would choose
a Madigan-backed legislative contender.
Chicagoans were 19 percent for a Rauner
candidate and 43 for a Madigan person, the
Cook County suburbs went 32 for a Rauner
candidate and 41 for a Madigan candidate,
and union households broke 30 percent for the
Rauner candidate to 43 percent for the Madigan
candidate.
Another way of looking at it is that Governor
Rauner out-performs his personal favorable/
unfavorable ratings across the board when we
stacked him up against the image of Speaker
Madigan.
Only 36 percent of whites viewed Rauner
favorably, but 44 percent would vote for a

Thirty-six percent of collar county voters like
Rauner, but 49 percent would pick a Rauner
candidate over the 29 percent who’d choose
a Madigan candidate. Forty-four percent
of Downstaters said they had a favorable
impression of Rauner and 51 percent would
vote for a Rauner-backed candidate over a
Madigan-backed candidate. I could go on, but
you get the idea.
So what does this tell us? Well, first of all,
neither state politician is beloved. (Duh.)
Indeed, they’re so disliked that candidates
should avoid any association with the both
of them. But hotly contested campaigns are
often won on the edges, and the anti-Madigan
message might have an edge over the anti-
Rauner message.
We didn’t do this test with President Trump,
who will certainly be used by the Democrats
against the Republicans in many areas. And
there are other issues out there that will decide
various races. Plus, as always, this is just one poll
in June.

New York production ran a staggering 6,137
performances, and why the New York Times
called its debut “a smoke signal to the world
that the musical can touch unexpected
depths in the human heart.”
Originally conceived, directed, and
choreographed by the late Michael Bennett,
A Chorus Line opens in the middle of an
audition for an upcoming Broadway produc-
tion. The show’s formidable director puts
the performers through their paces, with
every dancer, from veteran to newcomer,
desperate for the job. After a round of cuts,
17 hopefuls remain, with the director telling
the assembled talents that he’s looking for a
strong dancing chorus of four boys and four
girls. Before making his decision, however,
he wants to learn more about them, and
with reluctance – and through the delivery
of iconic numbers including “What I Did
for Love,” “I Hope I Get It,” and “One” – the
dancers reveal both their pasts and their
considerable gifts.
An unprecedented critical and box-office
hit, Bennett’s musical received 12 Tony
Award nominations and won in nine catego-
ries, among them Best Musical, Direction,
Choreography, Score (by Marvin Hamlisch
and Edward Kleban) and Book of a Musical
(James Kirkwood and Nicholas Dante).
During its astounding original run that
finally ended on April 28, 1990, A Chorus
Line became the longest-running production
in Broadway history until it was surpassed
by Cats in 1997, and the longest-running
Broadway musical originally produced in
the United States until it was unseated by
Chicago in 2011. At present, A Chorus Line
is the sixth-longest-running Broadway show
of all time.
Directing Music Guild’s latest is Harold
Truitt, a longtime veteran of the organiza-
tion who has appeared many times on-stage
and helmed such previous Music Guild
productions as The Music Man, Grease, and
Joseph & the Amazing Technicolor Dream-
coat. Amy Trimble serves as music direc-
tor, having recently held that position for
the Black Box Theatre musicals I Love You
Because and Clue: The Musical, and the show
is choreographed by Christina Myatt, the

P aintings and watercolors of richly beau-
tiful nature images – and images found
very close to home – will be on local display
through July 26, as the Beréskin Gallery & Art
Academy houses the recent works of a Fair-
field, Iowa, artist in John Preston: Day by Day.
One of the Midwest’s major landscape
painters, Preston continues to find new
and appealing scenes within one particular
county in Iowa. His popular landscapes
capture the features of fields, tree islands,
fence rows, and ribbons of gravel curving
over gently rolling prairie, and the artist
has a particular interest in the expansive
Iowa horizon. Preston came to the state
from Maryland to study in Fairfield, where
he earned his BFA in 1984 at Maharishi
International University. He began his local
painting with the expansive skies and fields
of the Midwest, but is currently exploring its John Preston: Day by Day @ Beréskin Gallery &
rivers, woods, and small towns. Art Academy through July 26
As a full-time painter, Preston has
participated in many solo and group shows, and his works have been exhibited regionally,
nationally, and as far away as Cambodia and Nigeria. They also hang in a wide range of
collections, including those of Equitable of Iowa, Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Hubbell
Realty, Iowa State Bank, Amoco Oil, and the Brunnier Art Museum at Iowa State University.

Roanoke

T he up-and-coming yet already widely
acclaimed country and Americana band Roa-
noke headlines the Redstone Room’s RME Member
Appreciation Show on July 18 in support of the
group’s self-titled album, a debut release by that
The Huffington Post called “brimming with opti-
mism, youthful exuberance, and creative energy.”
Based in Nashville, Roanoke originated when
singer/songwriters and guitarists Joey Beesley
and Taylor Dupuis decided to team up earlier
this decade, intending to create rich harmonies
Roanoke @ the Redstone Room - July 18
and unforgettable songs of love, heartbreak, and
exploration. They eventually found bandmates in mandolin player Zach Nowak, drummer Kyle Breese,
and guitarist John Fiorentino, and as a quintet, Roanoke began to craft a signature sound boasting
catchy melodies, roots instrumentation, and a blend of their individual cultural influences. While playing
the Nashville club and festival scene, delighted word-of-mouth spread and led to the group enjoying
frequent touring engagements, with Roanoke’s current cross-country tour taking the musicians to North
Carolina, Kentucky, Virginia, Wisconsin, Maryland, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Washington D.C. in the
weeks following their Redstone Room set.
Audiences’ collective excitement also led to the 2016 release of Roanoke, an album that has been
showered with critical praise. NoDepression.com wrote, “Roanoke creates a sound that’s both ageless
and expressive, one that is so strikingly effusive it practically demands attention on the initial encounter.”
Literally Darling stated, “No matter where you are, Roanoke will transport you to another place, be it a
winding mountain road or a front-porch swing. Their roots run deep with the heart of country music, the
soul of the blues, and the grit of Americana music.” And according to Mother Church Pew, “Roanoke is a
wondrous concoction of every good thing about the genre – intricate string arrangements, captivating

Pacelle resigned his post in February
when threats of contributors discontinuing
donations based on such allegations made
his position as CEO untenable. He’s hardly
the only instance of perfidy at the organiza-
tion, though. The extent of it is to make any
person ask him/herself: What, exactly, am I
supporting here?
Of the funds HSUS receives annu-
ally, those that don’t go into their listed
programs (RCReader.com/y/hsus6) go
toward fundraising events, lobbying, pen-
sion plans, and compensation packages.
After you factor the joint-cost expendi-
tures from the budget (lobbying, pensions,
management, special programs, et al),
the fundraising figures would have to be
considerably higher than that: accord-
ing to that 990 Form, HSUS claimed
total fundraising expenses for FY2016 of
$38,524,244. Charity Navigator, a watchdog
organization, recently downgraded HSUS’s
status (RCReader.com/y/hsus7) from three
stars to two, and rated its financial status
an abysmal one star. The Better Business
Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance (BBB-WGA)
has revoked HSUS’s accreditation as a char-
ity (RCReader.com/y/hsus8, 9). And the
fallout from Pacelle’s transgressions have
led Animal Charity Evaluators (ACE) to
rescind its 2016 Standout recommendation
(RCReader.com/y/hsus10) of HSUS’s Farm
Animal Protection Campaign.
Before his ouster, Pacelle, who was
quoted as saying (RCReader.com/y/hsus11)
he wanted to create “an NRA of the animal-
rights movement,” was thought to be push-
ing HSUS’s agenda more in the direction
(RCReader.com/y/hsus12) of The People for
the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

This animal-rights group’s slogan reads,
“Animals are not ours to eat, wear, experi-
ment on, use for entertainment, or abuse
in any other way.” (They have little to say
about animal welfare, without which talk of
rights is spurious.) There is irony present,
and not just in Pacelle’s penchant for treat-
ing his female staff as meat.
There’s also the matter of ethics, as in
HSUS was prosecuted under the Racketeer
Influenced and Corrupt Organizations
(RICO) Act – you know, the law that targets
mobsters – because they were so lacking
in them. HSUS, along with PETA and the
American Society for the Prevention of
Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), brought suit
against Feld Entertainment (RCReader.
com/y/hsus13), the company that, until
recently, owned and operated Ringling
Brothers. Animal-rights activists for
HSUS’s prosecution claimed the circus was
harming elephants in its care. Their key
witness? A former Feld handler. Did he tes-
tify? He sure did (RCReader.com/y/hsus14).
Was he paid to? Was he ever!
The case, which began in 2000 was
tossed out in 2009 when the extent of the
prosecution’s perfidy unfolded. Feld coun-
tersued HSUS (RCReader.com/y/hsus15)
and friends under RICO statutes. HSUS
and its co-defendants agreed to pay Feld
(RCReader.com/y/hsus16) $15.75 million.
Despite the consistent barrage of mar-
keting that associates HSUS with rescue
shelters for discarded and abused pets,
your local shelter receives the equivalent
of pocket change from HSUS, if it receives
anything at all. Donate to your local shelter,
instead.

n display through September 16, the Figge Art
Museum’s new exhibit Alois Kronschlaeger: Poly-
chromatic Contemplations will acquaint visitors with the
talents of one of America’s most prolific artists, a native
Austrian whose work, as he states, “deals with space,
light, color, how you intervene and activate a space, and
how a space can be a combination of both interior and
exterior.”
The New York-based Kronschlaeger combines
weaving, sculpting, and painting in intricate sculptures
whose geometries and colors appear to change as the
Alois Kronschlaeger: Polychromatic Contemplations
viewer moves through the gallery. Kronschlaeger’s
works explore his fascination with architectural forms @ the Figge Art Museum through September 16
and their relationship to the surrounding landscape.
When visiting the Figge in the fall of 2016, the artist recognized an immediate synergy between his geometric
sculptures and architect David Chipperfield’s building design and the civic grid on which it is sited.
Consequently, in his Figge exhibition, Kronschlaeger seeks to remind visitors of the historic division of the
Midwestern landscape into squares that form the boundaries of townships, farms, and homesteads in the process.
Polychromatic Structures features site-responsive installations of Kronschlaeger’s geometric polychrome basswood
and ink sculptures, arranged according to the light, scale, and vantage points of the gallery environment. For this
exhibition, the artist will also produce a large-scale structure that spreads across the walls of the gallery, bringing
three dimensions into a space traditionally reserved for two.
Kronschlaeger’s practice is greatly influenced by the avant-garde legacies of Constructivism and post-Minimalism,
and he strives to create a phenomenological experience for the viewer. As the audience moves through the space,
and light and reflections shift, Kronschlaeger’s sculptures morph into new forms. This dynamic is heightened by the
artist’s adept manipulation of color relationships, which produce optical and kinetic effects evoking the paintings of
Carlos Cruz-Diez and the Penetrables of Jesús Rafael Soto.
With their geometric form and variation in scale, Kronschlaeger’s sculptures also suggest urban industrial
architecture. Similar to a metropolitan cityscape, the works come alive in the tensions between positive and negative
space and through the element of human interaction. Shaping the audience’s experience of the gallery in this way,
Kronschlaeger invites contemplation on how the built environment guides our behavior.

ecently making the top five of the New
York Times’ list of “25 Best American Plays
Since Angels in America,” author Bruce Norris’
acclaimed comedic drama Clybourne Park will
be staged at the Playcrafters Barn Theatre July
13 through 22, the Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize
winner described by the Hollywood Reporter as
“provocative entertainment that generates as
much uneasiness as laughter.”
Written as a spin-off to Lorraine Hansberry’s
legendary drama A Raisin in the Sun, Clybourne
Park portrays fictional events set before and Clybourne Park @ Playcrafters - July 13 through 22
after those in the Hansberry play, and is loosely
based on historical events that took place in Chicago. Set in 1959, the first act introduces audiences
to a young couple who are thinking of selling their home in a universally white Chicago suburb
to African-Americans who, it becomes clear, are the Younger family of A Raisin in the Sun. Some
homeowners are afraid the newcomers will change the neighborhood forever – a situation that
becomes flipped in the play’s second act, which takes place 50 years later, in the same house, with
Clybourne Park now an all-black neighborhood seemingly ripe for gentrification.
What results in Norris’ bitterly funny and thoughtful work led to Clybourne Park receiving both
the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the 2012 Tony Award for Best Play, plus raves such as Variety
magazine’s: “Rarely in American drama have the gaps between what one wants to say, how one says
it, and what one really feels been as hilariously explored for dramatic effect as Norris is able to pull
off here.”
Serving as director for Clybourne Park is Playcrafters veteran Alexander Richardson, whose resent
productions for the venue include The Christians, Constellations, and Neil Simon’s Rumors. And
featured in the cast are a blend of Playcrafters veterans and newcomers: Victrese Jones, Jesse Mohr,
Angelique Morgan, Cynthia Safford, Kyle Taylor, Eric Teeter, and Mike Turczynski.
Clybourne Park runs Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m., admission is $13,

cultpures and paintings by Iowa- and Illinois-
based talents will fill the Quad City Arts Center
from June 29 through August 17, as the Rock Island
venue houses Dean Kugler’s Relics and Erik Ohrn’s
Momentarily Present – exhibitions boasting works by
two gifted artists who use figuration to communicate
ideas about psychology, internal states of being, and
the solitary nature of existence.
Its creator a sculpture artist based in Davenport,
Relics finds Kugler focusing on works that capture a
certain period of development within the sculpture. Eric Ohrn’s Seated Figure in Quad City Arts
Rather than pushing his figures to “completion,” he

has chosen to present segments of the figure that are
stripped-down or at various stages of work. Additionally, Kugler blurs the line between presentation and art
by making highly decorative stands and bases that become one with the sculpture. As Kugler says in his artist
statement: “I am an artist that focuses on the beauty I find within our species. I have always been motivated by
the human figure and the intricacies associated with it. There is a shared experience between the artist and the
viewer that better allows me to convey thoughts, feelings, and emotions than with any other subject matter.”
A Quad Cities native now based in Joliet, Illinois, Ohrn is a figurative painter who believes that paint can
capture myriad thoughts and feelings, as he expresses in his new painting exhibit Momentarily Present. He
works on panels so that he can scratch into or sand down areas of a painting, an act which leads to textures as
unique as the portraits he creates, and by omitting crucial details in otherwise ordinary scenes, Ohrn invites
multiple readings of each piece. As Ohrn writes in his own artist statement: “Making art is about being present
and acknowledging that anything can be key for the work to take an exciting shift in direction. Thoughts and
feelings are constantly coming and going, swiftly slipping by and out of reach. I am driven to latch onto these
fleeting moments with hopes to capture something meaningful.”
An opening reception for Dean Kugler’s Relics and Erik Ohrn’s Momentarily Present, featuring meet-and-
greets and complimentary food and beverages, will be held on June 29 at 7 p.m., and the Quad City Art
Center’s gallery hours are Tuesdays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

collection of firecracker ‘outlaw country,’ singer/
songwriter Nikki Lane headlines a June 30 Moeller
Nights concert at Maquoketa’ Codfish Hollow
Barn, her performance sure to underscore why
Rolling Stone labeled her songs “inspirations cased
in a streetwise, modern shell that’s as unapolo-
getic as Johnny Cash’s middle finger.”
Born in Greenville, South Carolina, in 1983, Lane
has spent her career reinventing the nostalgic Nikki Lane @ Codfish Hollow Barn - July 21
sounds of 1960s country music for a modern
audience, mixing Southern twang with lush orchestral arrangements and the occasional pop/rock hook.
After dropping out of high school, the artist spent her early adulthood working as an L.A.-based fashion
designer and then moved to New York City, where a messy breakup inspired her to pick up the acoustic
guitar and write a handful of sad, sassy country songs inspired by the works of Loretta Lynn and Merle
Haggard. What began as a form of self-therapy eventually developed into a full-time pursuit, and Lane
wound up leaving town again, this time returning to the American South by settling in Nashville.
Having relocated to the country music capital of the world, Lane began building a local audience
by putting her own spin on the genre. Her Gone, Gone, Gone EP, whose orchestral sound earned
comparisons to mid-century icons and retro-revivalists, appeared in July 2011, followed several months
later by the full-length Walk of Shame, which AllMusic.com’s Mark Deming praised by saying, “Lane has
confidence to spare and a voice that lives up to her own self-worth.” After extensive touring in 2012,
she signed to New West in 2013, with her debut for the label – All or Nothin’ – issued in May of 2014.
Three years later, Lane released Highway Queen, leading Paste magazine’s Holly Gleason to rave that
the album’s songs “read like Polaroids from a wild heart gone ragged.” Lane also won the Ameripolitan
Music Awards’ “Outlaw Country Female” citation in 2017, and to this day, the musician also owns and
operates a Nashville-based clothing store fittingly named “High Class Hillbilly.”

JURASSIC WORLD:
FALLEN KINGDOM
Despite the movie topping the summer-
of-2015 box-office charts and grossing
some 1.67 billion worldwide, it appears
that many of Jurassic World’s salient
details completely left my brain the
moment I completed my review. I real-
ized this after returning to said article in
preparation for my Jurassic World: Fallen
Kingdom critique, and discovering that
many of elements I was planning to diss
this time around were elements I already
knocked three years ago: the slavishness
to Spielberg, the presentational sameness,
the lack of genuine scares, the tired cliché
of the first character killed off being a
person of color. In fairness, the new fi lm
kills off a black guy and a white guy simul-
taneously, which I guess is this series’ idea
of progress, but still … . What was left to
bitch about?
Quite a bit, actually. But in a not-
unhappy surprise, very little of it matters,
because while Jurassic World: Fallen King-
dom may be stupider than its predecessor,
it’s also a lot more fun.
Anyone familiar with this dinosaur-
themed franchise dating back to 1993’s
Jurassic Park knows the drill from the
prelude on: vicious attack; reams of
character introduction and exposition;
initial awe; eventual terror; panicked
re-grouping; higher-stakes terror; dino-
détente; promise of sequels; fin. Yet while
he’s obviously constricted by a deeply
entrenched, studio-mandated formula,
director J.A. Bayona frequently convinces
you that you’re not merely sitting through
another soulless corporate blockbuster
lab-designed to nab summertime dollars.
You’re also at a J.A. Bayona movie, which
means that things are likely to get a little
intense and weird, or at the very least,
weirdly beautiful. Had I not known in
advance that the fi lm was by the ter-
rific Spanish director of The Orphanage,
The Impossible, and 2016’s marvelous
A Monster Calls, I wouldn’t necessarily
have pegged Fallen Kingdom as a Bayona
outing. But I definitely would’ve thought
that whoever did direct it had studied
Bayona’s style with the same fervor as
Spielberg’s.
At first (again, until I returned to my
original Jurassic World review), I was
surprised to see my morning screening
overrun with very small children – even
more of them, it appeared, than attended
last weekend’s Incredibles 2. Like the
Transformers series, though, it appears
the Jurassic releases have indeed become
family events, perhaps because their story-
lines can be followed by any moderately
astute four-year-old. Written by Derek
Connolly and Jurassic World director
Colin Trevorrow, this new franchise addi-
tion features a neatly bifurcated narrative,
with the first half devoted to getting the
remaining dinosaurs off their theme-park
island – and, theoretically, into a newly
created outdoor sanctuary – before they’re
obliterated by an active volcano. Its second
half, however, finds the rescued creatures
at the mercy of sinister forces who want
to weaponize them for profit, a turn of
events that delivers a strange, somewhat
awkward having-your-cake-and-eating-it
sensation: We’re meant to shriek at the
dinosaurs in Act I and actively root for
them in Act II.
Unless you yourself are four, the rooting
will probably come easier than the shriek-
ing – which isn’t to imply that the youths
at my screening shrieked, either. Maybe,
culturally, we’re just at the point in which
prehistoric beasts no longer have the
power to scare us. (If so, I blame Barney.)
Happily, though, they can still entertain
us, and while Fallen Kingdom isn’t the
beast bit frightening, Bayona does a fine
job of keeping his dinosaurs engaging,
and even empathetic. This is never more
evident than in his handling of the geneti-
cally modified indoraptor, a malevolent
monster that amusingly feigns sleep and

Chris Pratt in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
pursues its prey with an insinuating clack-
ing of claws on the floor – the dino-equiv-
alent of “Here, kitty, kitty, kitty … .” (It
was disheartening, in the usual manner,
when this “most sophisticated dinosaur
ever created” was outrun by a 10-year-
old girl, but what’re you gonna do?) Yet
Bayona routinely makes you feel for his
no-longer-extinct creatures through
superb staging: the howling brachiosau-
rus, alone and abandoned on Isla Nublar,
slowly swallowed by flames and smoke;
the head-butting pachycephalosaur send-
ing deserving victims sailing through the
air; the original Jurassic World’s trained
velociraptor Blue scampering into the
brush, his escape illuminated by car
headlights.
If Bayona shows more interest in his
dinosaurs than his humans, you can
hardly blame him, as nearly everything
to do with the latter is dumber than dirt.
I did enjoy the villainous turns by Toby
Jones (outfitted with hilariously fake hair
and teeth) and the endlessly creepy Ted
Levine, and in her role as the token Feisty
Little Kid, Isabella Sermon proves herself
an able actor and first-rate screamer. Jeff
Goldblum also returns to the franchise,
lending typically winning verbal eccen-
tricity to his two scenes as Ian Malcolm.
But Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard
are unfortunately back, too; Howard’s
footwear change from stilettos to combat
boots does nothing to make her dinosaur
advocate more interesting, and Pratt
again does his très adorbs he-man thing,
only with less commitment and worse
dialogue, and as the central figure in a

ludicrously silly action-hero slugfest. (It
pains me to admit how unlikely it is that
the once-endearing Pratt, as a performer,
will ever have anything new to give us.)
Rafe Spall, James Cromwell, Geraldine
Chaplin, Justice Smith, Daniella Pineda,
and a severely under-used B.D. Wong
also appear, and are similarly stuck with
dopey, all-too-familiar plot mechan-
ics and staggeringly silly contrivances.
(Why, for instance, are Pratt and Howard
imprisoned when it would make far more
sense for the bad guys to shoot them?)
Unlike Jurassic World, however, this one
at least moves, with one scene of under-
water peril – a sequence magically shot to
look like one continuous take – an almost
literally breathless great time. The movie
also looks fantastic. Bayona isn’t staring,
transfi xed, at the altar of Spielberg the
way Trevorrow did, and while the direc-
tor’s pacing is excellent, he also creates
marvelously distinct, low-key effects out
of light, shadow, and composition, and has
a true flair for physical comedy. (Pratt’s

The Last Stare Fighter
I’m a 28-year-old woman who has been
single for over five years. I’m steering
clear of dating sites right now because
of how so many guys portray themselves
in ways that are very different from how
they are in person. But then, in day-to-
day life, when I smile at a guy I like, he’ll
usually smile back but he still won’t come
over and talk to me. Call me traditional,
but I want a guy who has the courage to
approach me. Guys are meant to do the
pursuing.

Well, okay, but forgive the poor dears
if they’d like some sign from you about
what’s likely to be in store for them if they
hit on you – a hot time in bed or years
of painful skin grafts from a 300-degree
pumpkin latte you throw in their face.
Oh, right – you say you smile at the
guys you like. Consider that from a guy’s
perspective: Maybe you were smiling at
him – or maybe at some CrossFit Adonis
standing right behind him.
A single ambiguous signal isn’t a reliable
message – that is, a reliably actionable mes-
sage – especially when there’s risk involved
in taking action. (In hitting on you, there’s
the possibility of public humiliation –
maybe even of the “Whoa, the YouTube
video is going viral!” kind.) It also doesn’t
help that a smile requires very little invest-
ment from you – in effort or risk.
Amotz Zahavi, an Israeli zoologist who
studies signaling – behavioral commu-
nication between individuals or critters
– points out that signals that are more
“costly” to the sender are read as more
trustworthy (and usually are). Your talking
to a guy would be an example of a stronger
indication of interest from you (than a
mere smile) – particularly if you initiate
the conversation.
You send an even stronger message that
you’re interested by giving several signals
at once. For example, you could touch a
guy’s arm while you’re talking and make
and hold eye contact (though just for a
few seconds, not as if you’re a serial killer
trying to hypnotize him into climbing into
your trunk).
You should also consider that men, more
than ever, want to err on the side of seeing
that their advances are wanted – which is

to say they’re all terrified that they’ll wake
up one day and find their name tweeted
with #MeToo. This surely affects their
willingness to even ask women out.
I have written previously about how
overt pursuit by a woman – direct, explicit
expressions of interest, such as asking a
guy out – is a risky strategy, as it tends to
lead men to subconsciously devalue her.
(If she’s chasing them instead of snubbing
them like so many other women do, she
must be desperate and/or have her sanity
up on blocks in the front yard.)
However, it turns out that you can prob-
ably go really, really big in being flirtatious
– like way over what you’re seriously sure
is the top. This comes out of the fascinating
psychological effect of “indirect speech”
– speech that implies what the speaker
means rather than explicitly stating it.
The indirectness allows us an essen-
tial “out,” according to psychologist and
linguist Steven Pinker. Basically, as long
as we can’t be 100 percent certain of what
a person really means – as long as there’s
even 1 percent of uncertainty – there’s
“plausible deniability.” This allows us to
just ignore something that would have
been offensive if it had been said in a flat-
out way.
So, for example, if something is said
euphemistically – á la the ol’ “Wanna
come up and see my etchings?” – both
parties can act as if it didn’t mean what it
pretty obviously does mean: something
along the lines of “It’s getting a little loud
in here in Cafe Pretentious. Wanna go
somewhere quiet and have sex?”
However, realistically, flirting big, on its
own, may not be enough. There are men
who will realize – after you walk out of the
drugstore or cafe and out of their lives for-
ever – that they should have asked you out.
Put them in a position to have a second
chance by going to the same place over and
over – such as by showing up at the same
coffeehouse every Saturday.
In doing this, you’ll also get the benefit
of observing men in a naturalistic habitat,
allowing you to see potentially disturb-
ing things about them that aren’t evident
online. This can end up being a life-saving
measure – perhaps literally (in rare cases),
and at least figuratively when you discover
that five minutes talking with a guy flies
right by … like seven hours spent gagged
and zip-tied to a chair.

you, but in a graceful and constructive way
that has positive results.
GEMINI (May 21-June 20):
Introductory offers are expiring. The
bracing thrills of novelty must ripen
into the cool enjoyments of maturity.
It’s time to finish the dress rehearsals so the
actual show can begin. You’ve got to start
turning big, bright fantasies into crisp,
no-nonsense realities. In light of these shifting
conditions, I suspect you can no longer use
your good intentions as leverage, but must
deliver more tangible signs of commitment.
Please don’t take this as a criticism, but the
cosmic machinery in your vicinity needs some
actual oil, not just your witty stories about the
oil and the cosmic machinery.
CANCER (June 21-July 22): In the
coming weeks, you will have an
excellent chance to dramatically
decrease your Wimp Quotient. As
the perilously passive parts of your niceness
toughen up, I bet you will encounter brisk
possibilities that were previously off-limits or
invisible to you. To ensure you remain in top
shape for this delightful development, I think
you should avoid entertainment that

watching the latest flurry of demoralizing

18): Ecologists in Mexico City
investigated why certain sparrows
and finches use humans’ discarded
cigarette butts in building their nests. They
found that cellulose acetate, a chemical in the
butts, protects the nests by repelling parasitic
mites. Is there a metaphorical lesson you
might draw from the birds’ ingenious
adaptation, Aquarius? Could you find good
use for what might seem to be dross or debris?
My analysis of the astrological omens says that
this possibility is worth meditating on.
PISCES (February 19-March 20): I
suspect that sometime soon you will
come into possession of an
enchanted potion or pixie dust or a
pouch full of magic beans – or the equivalent.
If and when that occurs, consider the
following protocols: (1) Before you use your
new treasure, say a prayer to your higher self,
requesting that you will be guided to use it in

Prometheus Bound Weedeater

A classic stage work that, according to the New York

Times, is “rich in poetic imagery” while demonstrat-
ing that “even for the Greek gods, what goes around
comes around,” Aeschylus’ Greek tragedy Prometheus
Bound serves as the latest production in Gensius Guild’s
2018 season, its June 30 through July 8 presentation
enacted by a cast of 16 and with its chief characters
performing in period-appropriate maskas.
Based on the myth of Prometheus, a Titan who
defied the gods and gave fire to mankind – acts for
which he was subjected to perpetual punishment
– Prometheus Bound was the first work in a trilogy Genesius Guild’s Prometheus Bound
that also included the plays Prometheus Unbound @ Lincoln Park through July 8
and Prometheus the Fire-Bearer, neither of which has
survived. Exploring the conflict between force and justice, Aeschylus’ work finds its title character chained to a
rock for divulging to the humans the secrets of dire against the orders of Zeus – here portrayed as an Olympian
upstart who, with Prometheus’ aid, seized dictatorial power in a coup. After being crossed by the Titan, however,
Zeus vintictively orders his damnation. But Prometheus, who can divine the future, holds a trump card in that he
knows that Zeus will be overthrown by one of his own sons, and Zeus is desperate to know which one.
With the remainder of the play featuring visitors who commiserate, offer advice, and attempt to negotiate
deals, Prometheus Bound remains an insightful and contemporary tragedy. As the New York Times stated in a 2007
production of the piece, “The fifth-century B.C. lessons about the abuse of power by an autocratic ruler who runs
roughshod over anyone who disagrees with him are not lost on a 21st Century audience. Just plug in names from
today’s headlines for any of the characters.”
Directing Prometheus Bound is Genesius Guild veteran Michael Callahan, an on-stage presence in such
presentations as Antigone, Twelfth Night, and Measure for Measure who also appeared in Opera Quad Cities’
recent production of The Marriage of Figaro. In Callahan’s directorial debut for Guild, Prometheus is portrayed by
Marc Nelson, with Guild veteran Kathy Calder (The Trojan Women, Henry V) serving as the chorus head Choragos.
Fourteen additional performers, meanwhile, round out the cast: Andrew Calder, Daityn Duffy, Nathan Elgatian,
Zoe Grabow, Emily Graham, Bob Hanske, Mischa Hooker, Katie Phillips, Liz Sager, Anna Marie Schreiber, Sue Staley,
Sarah Willie, John Wright, and Adrick Woodruff.
Prometheus Bound will be performed in Lincoln Park on Saturdays at Sundays at 8 p.m., and admission to the

Shepherd, and Travis Owen – the former two
musicians having co-founded the group 20 years
ago – the fired-up sludge-metal musicians of
Weedeater perform a Rock Island Brewing Com-
pany concert on July 26, their most recent album
Goliathan described by AngryMetalGuy.com as “an
intoxicating examination of Southern culture and
arguably the most tongue-in-cheek approximation
of their sludgy, stoner sound thus far delivered.”
Weedeater was born in 1998 in Wilmington, Weedeater @ RIBCO - July 26
North Carolina, originally taking shape as a
side project of vocalist/bassist Collins, who was
otherwise engaged with sludge-metal cult favorites Buzzov*en. Upon that band’s official demise at the
decade’s end, Collins was free to concentrate his efforts on Weedeater alongside guitarist Shepherd and
drummer Keith “Keko” Kirkum, and the trio released two sludgecore albums to kick off the new millennium:
2001’s … And Justice for Y’all and 2002’s Sixteen Tons. Collins later decided to tour briefly as the bass player
for Bongzilla and also found time to lend his four strings to his Wilmington neighbors of Sourvein. But he
also continued to work with Shepherd and Kirkum, touring relentlessly with the likes of C.O.C. and Alabama
Thunderpussy, and recording Weedeater’s third full-length album God Luck & Good Speed in 2007.
The musicians suffered numerous personal injuries in 2010 – Collins lost a toe in a shotgun-cleaning
accident, Shepherd broke a finger, Kirkum tore his meniscus – but rallied to record and release Jason … The
Dragon in 2011, which SputnikMusic.com called “an album that you’ll want to play time and time again” in
which “we find the band branching out and experimenting with new sounds and ideas.” After Kirkum left
the group, drummer Owen joined Collins and Shepherd for Bandeater’s relentless touring schedule, and the
rockers have been enjoying some of the best reviews of their careers for Goliathan.” As MetalInjection.net
raved, “Their ability to weave humor and great turns of phrase aside, their music devastates you, sounding
completely unhinged in moments, dark and brooding in others, and makes you giggle in others.”
