We found the tour not only informative, but
After years of research and renovation, the building
very entertaining. We got to go into some opened in 1992 as the Tenement Museum. Six of the
of the old tenement buildings, look around, twenty apartments have been recreated to show visitors
and hear fascinating stories of the people how the immigrants really lived. Today’s New Yorkers

ALL WALKS OF LIFE
Shirley, Wisconsin Bridget Marshall, a New York Tour Guide, tells us about
her work.
I live and work in the same New York neighborhood that
my family has lived in for four generations so I know the
place like the back of my hand. In recent years it’s become
quite trendy, but I remember it as a working class
neighborhood with a huge mix of nationalities. As a child, I
often accompanied my grandfather while he did deliveries
for his deli and he’d tell me stories about local people and
places. That sparked my interest in local history. Yet it
never occurred to me that this could lead to a career.
After graduating from high school I majored in engineering
at the University of Boston. I took a job with an engineering
firm – it was the sensible thing to do – but my heart wasn’t
in it. I hated sitting behind a desk all day.
When the company relocated to Colorado, I decided it was
time for a change and I retrained as a tour guide. I got my
tour guide license in 2005 and I haven’t looked back. I
specialize in tours of the Lower East Side, often ones that
are tailored to certain interests, such as tours for groups of
foreign tourists who want to hear about immigrants from
their homeland.

City Parking Upsets Residents

The city council plans to build a parking lot on the site of one of the
city’s parks. Council members claim this will help to solve the problem
of limited parking space in the center of the city. Local residents are
upset by the plan because the city has so few green areas.

Task A: Letter
Write a letter to the editor of the Metropolitan Times expressing your opinion on the plan. Suggest another way in which
the parking problem could be solved. Begin your letter, Dear Editor.

Task B: Essay
Some people believe space is valuable in cities and that green areas should be used to develop business and commerce.
Other people feel that these green areas are essential for the quality of life of the city’s population. Discuss both these views.
Then say which view you agree with. Give your reasons. Be specific.
