STANDARD LESSON PLAN FORMAT

I. Describe the Class: 7th Grade English, 27 students total, 1 ELL, 2 LD

II. Subject/Skill: Identify the eight parts of speech

III. Objective(s): Students will be able to:

 Identify the eight parts of speech

 Provide an example of each of the different parts of speech

IV. Procedures:

 Open question: “How many parts of speech are there? Then have

students identify these parts: bullet pointing them on the board for the

students to take notes.

 Ask students: “Can i have an example of an adjective? Can someone

please use a preposition in a sentence? I need to know the correct way to

use an adverb? What's a conjunction? How can identifying the different 8

parts of speech improve one’s writing? Why is this important?

 Explain each part of speech and its function in a sentence. A noun is the

name of a person, place, thing, or idea. A pronoun is a word used in place

of a noun. A verb expresses action or being. An adjective modifies or

describes a noun or pronoun. An adverb modifies or describes a verb, an

adjective, or another adverb. A preposition is a word placed before a noun

or pronoun to form a phrase modifying another word in the sentence. A

conjunction joins words, phrases, or clauses. An interjection is a word

used to express emotion.

 Independent Practice/Group Practice: Conduct a review game to assess

whether the students understand and can recall the different parts of

speech. Split the class into two groups. Call up one member from each

team. The teacher shows only these two kids a word. A timer is set for one

minute and the first student is required to use a corresponding symbol

related to a part of speech, and then act it out. If the team guesses the

word - they get the point. If the first team doesn't get it, the second

student’s team gets the opportunity to steal that point if they can guess it.

V. Materials:

 Index cards with words that are nouns, verbs, adjectives or adverbs. As well

you will need 4 cards with corresponding symbols to the 4 parts of speech. I

use an arrow for Noun (pointing), a + for an Adjective (adding to a noun),a V

for verb, and A for Adverb.

VI. Grouping Structures: Conduct this activity in the classroom with the students

all facing the front of the board. During the game students may group closer to the

side of their team but should still remain seated.

VII. Modifications: In order to accommodate for the EL student, provide the student

with an e-dictionary that will assist them in understanding the parts of speech and words

that are being used during the lesson. During the game provide the student with drawn

out actions/symbols of each of the words to help them understand the words better and

help to improve their understanding of what the lesson is teaching. In order to

accommodate the lesson towards the LD students take the time to go over the lesson

and select them to respond so to be assured that they are up to pace and understand

the lesson. During the game select these students to act out the part of speech and if

needed provide more instruction to guide them.

VIII. Assessment: After completing the review game asses which parts of speech

students found to be the hardest to guess. Review these parts of speech and once

again have the students provide examples of those parts of speech. The game should

help to maintain participation and motivation through out the lesson making it easier to

get responses and feedback from the students. After conducting the lesson pass out a

mini pop quiz with different words and have the students identify what parts of speech

each word is. If the students successfully understood and could recall the information

from the lesson begin to move on and set up for the next day’s lesson. If there is need

for improvement, plan to have a review lesson before moving onto the next section.

Homework:
 Have students complete a school related Madlib.

 Have student write two sentences describing their personality and successfully

use all eight parts of speech.
