ENG3026M Tutorial Questions: Principles of Wireless Communications

SECTION A (Short Questions)

1. Place the following bands in order, from the lowest frequency band to the highest: Ku-Band,
C-Band, L-Band, S-Band, Ka-Band.

2. What is the angular separation between two adjacent symbols when employing BPSK?

3. What does the acronym DPSK stand for?

4. What is the authority that regulates telecommunication activities in Malaysia?

5. Radio waves energy rapidly attenuates proportional to the inverse exponent of the distance
traveled. What is the exponent value used in free space propagation path loss?

6. During severe signal multipath conditions, the energy intended for one symbol spills over to
the adjacent symbol. What is this effect called?

7. GMSK is a popular frequency shift keying scheme used. What does GMSK stands for?

8. In QPSK modulation scheme, what is the phase shift (in degrees) representation of symbols
11, 10, 00, 01?

9. In 64 QAM modulation scheme, how many bits are used to represent a symbol?

10. Name 2 models used to evaluate the propagation loss in various terrains.

11. What is the acronym OFDMA stands for?

12. Name 2 advantages of digital over analog modulation schemes.

ENG3026M Tutorial Questions: Principles of Wireless Communications

SECTION B
1. Describe clearly five factors that affect wireless signal propagation. Use diagrams to
illustrate your answer

2. One of the effects of severe signal multipath conditions in mobile communications is inter-
symbol interference or ISI.
i. With the aid of an illustration, describe how multipath propagation can create ISI issue.
ii. Draw the frame structure of a GSM time burst slot. Describe a method that is
incorporated in this frame structure to mitigate ISI issues
iii. In the GSM frame slot structure, what is the purpose of the training bits?

3. Briefly compare between SDMA, FDMA, TDMA and CDMA in terms of the concept,
terminals, advantages, and disadvantages.

4. A TETRA radio system is planned to be set up in Beijing for its rail transport system. Using
the HATA model, determine the coverage range (in km) of a cell, if the path loss is to be
limited to 140dB. The following parameters describes the system.
a. Frequency operation: 380MHz
b. Base station tower height: 30m
c. Mobile station height: 1.5m
