DOMAIN E LITERATURE REVIEW

Abstract

This literature review describes the three artifacts in my Professional Development Quest

Portfolio (PDQP) in Domain E. Domain E includes TPE 10 and TPE 11; it focuses on “Creating

and Maintaining Effective Environments for Student Learning” (Commission on Teacher

Credentialing, "California Teaching Performance Expectations", 2013, p. 16). The first artifact is

a research presentation on Drop-Out students. The second artifact is a collection of photos of a

classroom that I would like to base my future classroom on that uses flexible seating. The third

artifact is an example rotation schedule using the Daily 5 method.

TPE Domain E Artifact Literature Review

According to Constantino and Lorenzo (2009) “Using national or state standards when

developing a portfolio provides credibility to the documentation” (p.11). I will be using the

California Teaching Performance Expectations as a guide to populate my PDQP. The California

TPE Domain E is “Engaging and Supporting Students in Learning” (Commission on Teacher

Credentialing, "California Teaching Performance Expectations", 2013, p. 11). My PDQP can be

found at: https://rodamer-pdqp.weebly.com/

Artifact 1

The first artifact is a research project I completed on Drop-Out students. This report

demonstrates my knowledge and understanding of the importance of keeping students in a safe

and positive school environment and how to prevent students from dropping out of school. TPE

11 focuses on the Social Environment and how “Candidates create a positive climate for

learning” (Commission on Teacher Credentialing, "California Teaching Performance

Expectations", 2013, p. 16).

Artifact 2

Artifact 2 is a collection of photos of a classroom that uses a flexible seating

arrangement. I currently do not have a classroom of my own, but I have worked in this particular

classroom and really enjoyed the seating arrangement. This artifact is an example of how I would

like to model my future classroom around. Students are allowed to move freely within the

classroom and change their seats throughout the day. The flexible seating fostered a relaxed and

welcoming classroom environment that allowed students to feel safe and productive. The flexible

seating is accommodating for group collaborations and promotes student engagement. TPE 11

addresses the social environment of the classroom. I believe that the seating arrangements in the

classroom play a large role in the classroom social environment.

Artifact 3

Artifact 3 is an example of a small group rotations schedule used for the Daily 5 method.

The Daily 5 is a system of using small groups during literacy and language arts class time. “The

Daily 5™ is a framework for structuring literacy time so students develop lifelong habits of

reading, writing, and working independently” (Daily5, 2018). The Daily 5 book was written by

Gail Boushey and Joan Moser. I have successfully implemented this system in my own

classroom as used it as a substitute in other classrooms. This artifact demonstrates how I would

use organizational charts to help manage class time and maximize student learning and practice

time. TPE 10 states “They establish procedures for routine tasks and manage transitions to

maximize instructional time” (Commission on Teacher Credentialing, "California Teaching

Performance Expectations", 2013, p. 16).
