A dasha in vedic astrology is a progression of a particular object.

Among the nakshatra based dashas, we

progress the Moon to a certain extent. When you are born in a particular nakshatra, say Ashwini, its lord
Ketu becomes the dasha ruler. Now, the moon is assumed to progress at a particular rate through the
nakshatras. As the moon keeps moving ahead, it moves from Ashwini to Bharani to Krittika and so on.
Consequently, the dasha changes from Ketu to Venus to Sun.

Vimshottari means One hundred and twenty. So, he Vimshottari dasha basically means a dasha system
of 120 years. We consider 120 years because as per the ancient texts of astrology, a man’s total
longevity in the Kaliyuga is to be of 120 years.
