Objective:
 The students will be able to demonstrate understanding and
acceptance of the different cultures within their community by
writing a reflection paragraph discussing how they have
demonstrated cultural awareness before, or how they can better
illustrate understanding and acceptance of different cultures.
Materials:
 The book Seedfolks by Paul Freichman.
 Pencils (To write)
 College-ruled paper (To write on)
 Worksheet with questions
Procedure:
1. Present: Present Seedfolks by Paul Freichman. Ask the students,
“How many of you actively think about your culture and where your
family is tied back to? When you celebrate holidays, how many of
you think about the fact that not everyone celebrates this holiday?
Why do you celebrate this holiday?” Then engage students in a
discussion of what they celebrate and why, and they can compare
answers to the different answers other students give.
2. Read: The teacher will read the book to the class.
3. Discuss: The students will be given a worksheet with 5 questions—
some for comprehension, and some for reflection.
 What did Kim do that started the garden? What did Ana do
that eventually acted as a catalyst to the garden?
 What was something bad that happened in the garden?
 What would you plant in the garden as a reflection of your
culture?
 Which character did you relate to the most? Why?
 Explain how the communal garden brought so many people
together and why it is important.
After writing their answers, the students will share their answers with one
another. The class will then discuss the importance of recognizing and
respecting cultural differences, and how it can affect relationships.

4. Activities: After the class discussion, students will write a paragraph
discussing how they can show cultural awareness, how it can affect
relationships in a positive way, and something they can do better to
show understanding of cultural differences. Students can then
share with the class something they think that people as a whole
can do to respect one another and their cultural differences.
5. Evaluation: The teacher will review the paragraphs for
understanding and acknowledgement of cultural differences and
how to respect one another. The teacher will also ensure that
students followed the guidelines for the assignment and will correct
any errors in accuracy.
