ETN2016 Analog Communications Trimester 2

Assignment 2017/2018

A. General Instructions
1. You can choose to work individually or in a pair (in a group of maximum TWO members).
Attach the reports together and clearly state your partner’s name on the front cover. If you are
working in a group, the contributions of individual members should be clearly specified in the
report. Students are also allowed to work individually.
2. Answer all the questions.
3. Plagiarism is strictly prohibited. Do not copy from others, as these are their hard work and
effort. Do not allow to be copied either, as you are allowing plagiarism to take place and you
will have to bear the same consequences as those who neglect this friendly reminder. ZERO
will be given to all involved when plagiarism is detected.
4. Report specifications: Font size: 12, Font type: Times New Roman, Line spacing: 1.5. Top,
Bottom, Left, Right margins should be 1”. Kindly include page numbers.
5. Present your answers and figures neatly and clearly. Marks will be deducted for sloppy and
incomprehensible work.
6. Use the sample cover page as provided in Appendix A1 and attach the Appendix A2 together
with your report.
7. Please follow ALL the instructions given. Failure to do so will result in marks deduction.
8. This assignment contributes 15% of the total score for the subject.

B. Submission
1. Submission should be made by hand to Dr. Ng Yin Hoe at FOE BR4032, latest by 5
February 2018, 3 pm. Please note that you are required to sign upon submission. It is your
responsibility to ensure that the assignment is submitted to the correct location at the
appropriate time. Any excuse will not be entertained.
2. No late submission is allowed. Any late submissions will automatically receive ZERO marks
for all the group members.

Question
Consider a modulating signal w  t  given by

This modulating signal modulates the carrier signal c  t   Ac cos  2 f ct  using frequency
modulation (FM) scheme and the resulting modulated signal is given by
s  t   Ac cos  2 f c t  2 k  w   d  , where f c and k f denote the carrier frequency and
t
f 

frequency sensitivity, respectively. Assume that ta  0.2 , Ac  1 , and k f  55 . Let fc = (no. of

letters in your full name + no. of letters in your partner’s full name)  25 Hz if you are working in
pair or fc = (no. of letters in your full name)  50 Hz if you are working individually. Construct a
MATLAB script to simulate the FM modulator and include it into your report. You are also
required to provide the explanation for the MATLAB program in your report.

(a) State the value of your fc. Plot w(t), c(t), and s(t) separately in time domain.
[9 marks]
(b) Plot the spectral of w(t) and s(t) separately in frequency domain.
[6 marks]
(c) Assume that s  t  is contaminated by additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) n  t 
during the transmission and the received signal is r  t   s  t   n  t  . Plot n  t  and
r  t  separately in time domain. Also, plot the spectrum of r  t  . You can make
appropriate assumption on the noise power.
[9 marks]
(d) Discuss the results obtained in parts (a), (b), and (c) in detail.
[3 marks]
(e) Explain in detail how the received signal could be demodulated and how the effects
of noise could be mitigated.
[3 marks]
