TEXTBOOK EVALUATION

The ability to evaluate teaching materials

effectively.

Textbook evaluation helps teachers:

• acquire useful, accurate, systematic, and
contextual insights

19
TEXTBOOK EVALUATION
Three areas of benefits evaluation research
can bring:

• Needed for educational planning.

• Uses qualitative and quantitative research

techniques.

• Results can be immediately applied in school

20
TEXTBOOK EVALUATION EXTERNAL
AND INTERNAL

External evaluation:

Offers a brief overview of the materials

from outside

Cover, introduction, table of contents

21
TEXTBOOK EVALUATION EXTERNAL
AND INTERNAL
We can normally expect comments on some
or all of the following:

• The intended audience: Who the materials are

written for?

• The proficiency level: What level is the material

suitable for?

• The context in which material are to be used

22
TEXTBOOK EVALUATION EXTERNAL
AND INTERNAL

• How the language has been presented and

organized into teachable units/lesson

• Are the materials to be used as the main ‘core’

course or to be supplementary to it?

• Is a teacher’s book in print and locally

available?

23
TEXTBOOK EVALUATION EXTERNAL
AND INTERNAL

Internal evaluation

A closer and more detailed evaluation

24
TEXTBOOK EVALUATION EXTERNAL
AND INTERNAL

Factors to investigate in a more

internal evaluation:

• The presentation of the skills in the materials.

• The grading and sequencing of the materials.
• Where reading skills are involved?
• Where listening skills are involved?

25
TEXTBOOK EVALUATION EXTERNAL
AND INTERNAL

• Do speaking materials incorporate real

interaction or artificial dialogues?
• The relationship of tests and exercises to
a learner needs
• Do you feel that the material is suitable for
different learning styles?

26
EXAMPLES

27
CONCLUSION

on students learning

Reading, remembering and using

And teachers
