Welcome to Becoming a Resilient Person:

The science of stress Management and Promoting Wellbeing

This first lecture provides you with a "mental map" of the course. You'll get a brief
description of each of the lessons, and a sense of the structure of the entire course.
"Resilience" is partly about the ability to "bounce back" from difficult or challenging
situations. To help you keep that ability in mind, you'll see the path of a bouncing ball behind
Dr. Cook in every lecture. Watch as the ball fills with valuable information and advice.

Let's get started.

1. SPEAKER Clay Cook: I want to welcome you to Becoming a Resilient Person,
2. and before you take Lesson One, I wanted to give you an overview of the course,
3. and have an understanding of each of the lessons
4. and how they build upon each other, but yet they also stand alone.
5. That is, each lesson will cover a specific resilient skill, habit,
6. or routine that has been shown to independently improve
7. your overall well-being and resilience.
8. So Lesson 1 is all about understanding the concepts of stress and resilience.
9. This is the foundational work that gives rise
10. to why we want to incorporate resiliency skills, habits,
11. and routines into our lives.
12. Lesson 2 is about figuring out what matters most in our lives
13. and staying committed to doing what matters most
14. in ultimately being the person you want to be.
15. We call that values clarification and commitment.
16. Lesson 3 is about learning how to apply mindfulness-based practices
17. in your life in order to increase your awareness
18. and ultimately empower you to be liberated from uncomfortable thoughts
19. and feelings so you can behave most effectively in the moment.
20. And mindfulness practices help us achieve that.
21. Lesson 4 is about learning how we're not victims of our attention,
22. but rather we can purposefully choose to pay attention
23. to more positive aspects of our life, and when we do,
24. we actually will feel better, we'll think better,
25. and we ultimately behave better.
26. Lesson 5 is all about emotions.
27. Specifically, you'll focus on how do we manage intense negative emotions
28. that often get the best of us and cause us to engage in regrettable behaviors,
29. as well as how to cultivate positive emotions, those internal experiences
30. that make life worth living.
31. Lesson 6 focuses on lifestyle choices, specifically what
32. we call therapeutic lifestyle choices, which
33. are the cheap, readily available decisions you
34. can make that have limited negative side effects yet contribute
35. to overall physical and mental well being.
36. Lesson 7 will then turn our attention to relationships.
37. Specifically, we'll discuss four types of relationships
38. that promote our resilience and well-being.
39. Those are social support, mentoring, doing good deeds for others, and last,
40. identifying good role models.
41. Lesson 8 is going to provide a recap or summary of all the prior lessons
42. and really outline a specific approach to creating
43. a roadmap for your future resilience.
44. So how will you stay committed to engaging in these practices
45. so not only you become a resilient person, you can stay resilient person.
46.
