Kodak Edition RIP – Quick Start Guide

RIP Installation/Configuration/Profile Loading
1. The Kodak Edition RIP (Raster Image Processor) software will support the Kodak 1200i,
NJ1000i, NJ700/800 Series and T-200 printers from either a Macintosh or Windows system (see
specifications below). Current RIP Version is 4.6 v2.0.

2. This RIP software supports single computer – single printer applications only.
The USB key is enabled when the software is installed onto the workstation (MAC
or a PC, but not both) providing the proper HASP device driver is installed.

Workstation Recommendations:

Operating System:
- Windows 2000® Server w/ SP3, 2000-Pro® w/ latest service
pack, or XP Pro® w/ latest service pack.
- CPU: Intel Pentium III or higher (Pentium II minimum)

- Athalon, 1.5 Ghz or higher (350 Mhz minimum)

or
- Macintosh OS 10.2 or higher
- G3 or higher

Support:
40 Gb Hard Drive (4 Gb minimum)
1 Gb RAM per CPU (512 Mb minimum)
Video Display: 1280 X 768 16-bit color
One USB Port required for Security Key
DVD-ROM drive suggested, 40x CD-ROM (4x CD-ROM drive minimum)

3. PC Software Installation – Quick Steps:

a). Load software into CD/DVD-ROM drive:

- select language
- enter user id and password from USB key;
install USB key into a USB port.

ATTENTION INSTALLER:
Win XP >SP1/2 and Mac
OS >10.3 systems may
require a HASP device
driver loaded to enable the
USB security key detection –Obtain HASP driver
from the following link:

or copy HASP driver folder from the Installation Kit CD-ROM

and double-click on the HASPUserSetup.exe file to load
driver (may be necessary to complete installation or launch
program)

- Follow splash screens accordingly to load software. Select printer (use NJ1000i for the
Kodak 1200i) to load.

b). Restart computer when prompted.

c). ‘Clear Preferences’ when prompted.

- RIP should automatically launch. At ‘Change Setup’ window, select ‘Kodak 1200i-xx.

NOTE: The ‘running’ RIP software icon should be visible on

the lower task bar once program is launched – the program
may be launched by single-clicking on it (or by double-
clicking on desktop icon and then clicking on the RIP software
icon).

d). Install desktop driver for the printer previously selected (i.e. 1200i-60; check the
box).

e). Under Setup Properties, set the TCP address of printer

and port 9100; typically the printer will be connected
across a network. Note: The gateway address and subnet
values must be assigned at the workstation and printer
(should be the same value). Only use a RJ-45 crossover
Ethernet cable for direct connections.

f). Test workstation/printer connectivity by performing a

ping from the command prompt (Start – Programs –
Accessories – Command Prompt; typical on >Win 2000/XP
systems. For example, if your TCP/IP address is
192.168.28.106 at command prompt type: ping
192.168.28.106 and press enter. Four (4) ‘reply’ messages
should appear indicating proper connectivity.

ATTENTION INSTALLER:
If Ethernet connectivity cannot be established
within 40 minutes during this part of the
installation (i.e. No Response messages in the
above test or the RIP Test Print results in a
“Cannot Open Port…” message), then proceed
to step 4 below and place printer onto a peer-to-
peer network (i.e. computer to printer direct via
an Ethernet crossover cable as proved in the
Installation Kit box).

4. Printer/RIP Networking

a). For direct connections between the printer and the host computer (i.e. RIP
workstation) assign network address settings.

- At desktop right click on ‘My Network Places’ and select ‘Properties’. At Local Area
Connection window right click and select ‘Properties’. At local area connection window
select Internet Protocol and select ‘Properties’. If a TCP/IP protocol is not listed then go
ahead and install a TCP/IP protocol.

- Assign workstation IP address (this

address should be one number different, or
very close to, from the printer’s address for
best results, i.e. 192.168.24.73). Assign the
Subnet mask and Default gateway
address (these addresses will match the
printer). The Gateway address is not
required for NJ700-800 printers. DNS
addresses are not required unless
internet/web access is going to be assigned
and available.

b). Assign IP address at printer (i.e.

192.168.24.74) – stay in the same ‘range’ as
host computer from step 1 (i.e. one number
different from host workstation). Select Setup Menu – Network Menu – IP Address.
Assign the Subnet mask and Default Gateway addresses, these addresses must be
exactly the same as the host workstations. (see example above). Ensure DHCP
(Dynamic Host Control Protocol) is disabled unless advised by a network administrator
that it is required (a static IP address will need to be available in these types of
configurations).

NOTE: For NJ1000i-1200i installations refer to Kodak 1200i Technical Bulletin 6

for specific network connectivity instructions & driver loading from System CD.

c). Connect a RJ-45 ‘crossover’ Ethernet cable for direct connections between
workstation and printer; use regular Ethernet patch cable if connected via a HUB/Switch.
If a true DHCP (Dynamic Host Control Protocol) network connectivity is being utilized
then DHCP may need to be enabled at the printers control panel or print server.

d). Test workstation/printer connectivity by performing a ping from the command prompt
(Start – Programs – Accessories –
Command Prompt is typical on >Win
2000 systems. For example, if your
printers TCP/IP address (and RIP’s IP
assignment) is 192.168.28.106 at
command prompt type: ping
192.168.28.106 and press enter. Four
(4) ‘reply’ messages should appear
indicating proper connectivity.

e). Configuration double-check (example only):

Workstation/Server: RIP IP assignment: Printer:

IP: 192.168.28.105 IP: 192.168.28.106 IP: 192.168.28.106
Subnet: 255.255.255.0 Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.24.2 - uses Windows Gateway: 192.168.24.2
driver printer port
- Windows Driver
Loaded

5. Test Print

a). Ensure default printer selection before proceeding (check box).

b). Following correct IP addressing and port testing, activate RIP’s Test Print by
selecting ‘Setup’ – ‘Test Print’ from main RIP window (Production Manager) to verify
RIP function and connectivity.

- File should immediately start Processing; the file should begin RIPing within 1 minute.

4
KODAK Edition RIP – Quick Start Guide

- Test Print should start printing at printer within 2 minutes from initial activation of Test
Print.

NOTE: Test Print style may vary with software

version.

6. Production Workflow:

a). Open up a job; double-

click on job to edit in ‘Job
Properties’. Size the
image, select # copies,
copy spacing, rotation, etc.
Job may also be
positioned manually with
cursor.

rd
b). In Job Properties, click on the 3 tab (color management) from left. Below are some
suggested settings:

Preset: select ‘default job properties’ unless

a different media type is too be assigned or
a different media setting is desired.

Media: only select media type currently

loaded
- Error Diffusion (best)
- 600 dpi
- Smooth Blends: Super
- Perform color correction (check
the box)
- Output profile: should be pointing
to proper media profile (this is the
media type currently loaded)
- Linearization table: should be

5
KODAK Edition RIP – Quick Start Guide

pointing to proper .trc file (RIP normally defaults to the correct trc file when the
output profile is selected).
- Set Color Mode to CMYKLcLm (or 4 color output if desired/available)

c). Select ICC input profiles. It is

suggested to set CMYK and Gray to the
USWebCoatedSWOP.icc input profile.
Set RGB to AdobeRGB1998.icc.

NOTE: if selections shown are not

available they will need to be copied
from the Installation Kit CD-ROM (RIP
Input Profiles folder) to the ICC Profiles
folder (i.e. C/Programs/ Kodak Edition
RIP/ICC Profiles/CMYK). Each .icc profile
may then be added using the ‘Add’
button.

d). Add or select ICC output profile for

the currently loaded media type. Many
of the supported media profiles (.icc, pft,
and .cft) are located on the Installation Kit CD-ROM. Profiles may also be downloaded
from the media website (Kodak.media.com). Copy all profiles available for the loaded ink
type (i.e. Qi-Dye for 1200i series printers) to the ICC Profiles folder; add each profile (one
at a time) by selecting the ‘Add’ button.

- Set Bitmap rendering intent: Perceptual

- Set Vector rendering intent: Relative Colormetric (sometimes Spot Color is preferred)

e). In Job Properties, select ‘Printer Options’. Select desired print pass mode (User
defined allows 12 and 16 print pass selection), margins (edge band mode), dryer setting,
etc. Choose ‘Send’ to begin the RIP and print process.

- To switch to a different printer or change printer

configuration (TCP address, etc.) select ‘Change
Setup’ or Setup Properties at Kodak Edition RIP
splash screen.

f). While the Kodak Edition RIP does not offer an ‘active’ tiling capability you may split an
image into several panels by enlarging the page size. In effect, this will produce tiled
output without of the overlap feature.

NOTE: Source bitmap images will need to be of exceptionally high

quality/resolution for satisfactory results (i.e. >100MB .tif file). Standard bitmap
size should be >30 MB or pixilation/graininess may be observed in printed output.

7. Media Profile Import Instructions

These instructions will allow
importation of Presets (.ptf/.cft
files), which include color
profile and the ink
limit/restriction tables, into the
Kodak Edition RIP for the
purpose of supporting new
Kodak media applications.

Importing Presets (.ptf or .cft file):

a). Select “Import Preset” under “File”.

b). Browse to location of the .ptf or .cft file and open it. Be sure to check for proper
media name, ink type and resolution.

8
KODAK Edition RIP – Quick Start Guide

c). When complete, the following message will appear:

d). To use the newly imported profile, select “Default Job Properties” from the “Setup”
Menu. The new profile can also be selected from a dropdown list when a print file is
opened (i.e. do not want new profile to be the default selection - see step e).

9
KODAK Edition RIP – Quick Start Guide

e). In the setup dialogue box, choose the

3rd tab from the left, and select the new
media that was imported. The media
profiles will be automatically loaded, along
with pre-determined print modes. These
modes may be changed by the operator,
but drastic changes may cause issues with
ink lay down. Test should be run prior to
running final prints.

NOTE: Changes to any of the ‘Advanced’

settings (i.e. Rendering intent) may
improve or degrade printed output. Any
changes to ‘Ink Limits’ may seriously affect
overall gray color balance and is not
suggested.

NOTE 1. For customers who wish to perform profile

tweaking (re-linearization) of an existing profile (to
support either an existing Kodak media or to support a
non-Kodak/non-supported media application) they
should obtain the PROFILER plug-in (~600.00 USD)
from Scanvec-Amiable. A charge will be applied for this
software upgrade.
http://www.scanvecamiable.com/

In addition, A spectro-densitometer (color

measurement tool) or similar will be required to
perform swatch measurements. Contact your
reseller for assistance.

For example, the GretagMacbeth Eye One is an

excellent tool for both PC and MAC users (cost
is normally between 1100.00 and 1500.00 USD
depending on the specific package
purchased)…for more information (example

only): http://www.ecolortools.com/shop/index.php?shop=1&cart=33971&cat=8&

NOTE 2. For best color output only use Kodak approved media and ensure the correct media
profile is selected for each processed job.

8. Stand Alone Printer Testing (RIP bypass)

a). To further verify connectivity send a test file to printer via the EFPU
utility (Encad File Print Utility). Launch EFPU (if previously loaded) or load
EFPU (from CD-ROM, locate EFPU.exe utility and install).

b). Select printer port previously

configured (normally identified by a
default IP address the first time loaded).

c). Select the printer test file (link and

open the Printer Calibration Test
Target.rtl file from Installation Kit CD-
ROM) and select ‘PRINT’. Printer should
start printing within 30 seconds if
sending pre-ripped files to printer.

d). To download printer firmware

(product enhancements/bug fixes)
perform same procedure with a firmware
file (.rom file; may be obtained from
www.encad.com); printer will sound a
beep after approximately 60 seconds
and reboot power automatically.

NOTE: if you loaded a NovaJet windows driver or generic windows driver ensure
Port Settings is set to RAW & 9100. Under respective printer port properties (i.e.
Start – Settings – Printers), select ‘Ports’, select ‘Configure Port’, verify Port
Settings Protocol
window is set to
‘Raw’. The Port
Number/Type should
also be set to 9100.
